the impossible level?

Sometimes I'll come across a wad like this:

Where there just seems to be no progressing without cheating (no way out of the starting room, no shootable doors, all doors require keys, but no keycards anywhere). This is on zdoom, but I've tried other ports also. Am I missing something obvious?

You have to jump up the stack of crates to the air vent (which is a shootable door) to get out of the first room.

It took me all of ten seconds to figure out, so I'd say you were. :)

I pretty much beat that wad in one single setting. It wasn't too hard, save for perhaps map05, though, with the three boss rooms.
