mraggoth Posted July 7, 2014 I'm a huge fan of the original doom level design and loved the DTWID mod. I was curious of anyone could suggest wads that were inspired by classic doom. 0 Share this post Link to post
Marcaek Posted July 7, 2014 Fava Beans, Classic Episode, and Bedlam I guess. Bak2hell is alright if you clip past the torches at the end of E3M4. I like Deimos Deja Vu as a remix of E2. All of the above should be on http://doomworld.com/idgames/ 0 Share this post Link to post
mraggoth Posted July 7, 2014 Hey thanks for the suggestions I'll check those out. 0 Share this post Link to post
clamgor Posted July 7, 2014 Doom 2 the Way id Did. Doom 2 in Name Only. Switcheroom 0 Share this post Link to post

Salt-Man Z Posted July 7, 2014 I can't praise Wonderful Doom enough. Also, there're the projects that were spun off from the original DTWID (though not all 100% finished): DTWID: The Lost Episodes No End in Sight PhobosDeimos Anomaly 20 Years of Doom (which I loved) is 9 maps inspired by the original game. 0 Share this post Link to post
plums Posted July 7, 2014 The Ultimate NMD http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/doom/megawads/nmdu.zip Also recommending 20 years of Doom, even though it's a bit harder/bigger than DTWID (or doom.wad) edit: Also Dark Side of Deimos, though not everyone loved it, I thought it was a good E2 style episode. http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/doom/Ports/d-f/deimos.zip 0 Share this post Link to post
mraggoth Posted July 7, 2014 Awesome suggestions. I finished Fava Beans from Marcaek's suggestion and it was short and entertaining though the puzzle like level designed got me stuck a few times. That's exactly the kind of wads I like. 0 Share this post Link to post

fabian Posted July 7, 2014 I liked 2002ADO more than Ultimate NMD, Wonderful Doom or DTWID. 0 Share this post Link to post
Memfis Posted July 7, 2014 2002ado is my favorite Doom 1 wad forever (even if a better wad comes out, the memories about this one are too strong) but I wouldn't say that it's similar to DTWID, it'a lot more modern in style. 0 Share this post Link to post
joe-ilya Posted July 7, 2014 Nobody mentioned "flashback to hell" at all. :( Alot of 90's wads have the same style as ID. 0 Share this post Link to post
fabian Posted July 7, 2014 Oh yes, forgot one of the earliest ones: SerEtInf which is actually Serenity, Eternity & Infinity merged into one single Megawad. But quality-wise it is very 1994'ish... 0 Share this post Link to post
Salt-Man Z Posted July 7, 2014 joe-ilya said:Nobody mentioned "flashback to hell" at all. :(It's great, but it doesn't feel like DOOM1 at all—mostly because it's a riff on DOOM2, but also it's got a "feel" that's entirely its own. fabian said:Oh yes, forgot one of the earliest ones: SerEtInf which is actually Serenity, Eternity & Infinity merged into one single Megawad. But quality-wise it is very 1994'ish... I love this trilogy. Yeah, it's very 90s, but being some of the first custom maps I played when I got back into Doom, I've definitely got a soft spot for it. 0 Share this post Link to post
AshWilliams43 Posted July 7, 2014 Threshold of Pain 1 and 2 are excellent PSX DOOM wads. I'd recommend that plus the PSX DOOM TC. 0 Share this post Link to post
The_MártonJános Posted July 7, 2014 Doomep47. ... Oh, that's a WIP. My bad. 0 Share this post Link to post
Steve D Posted July 7, 2014 Double Impact is a modern take on Knee Deep In The Dead, with plenty of secrets but much more violent than the original. A classic; http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/doom/Ports/d-f/dbimpact.zip 0 Share this post Link to post

_bruce_ Posted July 9, 2014 fabian said:Isn't this "The Lost Levels of Doom" turned into a Doom 2 Megawad? Kind of? Don't really know as I played the "thud ding" some years ago. Though, quite recently, I looked at some maps in the editor and it rekindled my love for the style. By lost levels of doom do you mean the psx/zdoom project? Or do you mean the lost episodes? 0 Share this post Link to post
pavera Posted July 9, 2014 Ultimate Doom the Way Id Did is also in the works and should be released fairly soon! It's only going to be an episode long, but we're really striving to make it great. 0 Share this post Link to post

Xaser Posted July 9, 2014 Your mileage may vary, but I do find end1.wad very classic-doomy. As a disclaimer, I'm somewhat contractually obligated to mention it in every "recommend me a wad" thread, but only because it's also awesome. :P 0 Share this post Link to post

Doohnibor Posted July 15, 2014 The closest experience to the original DOOM 1 is PHOBOS-V DEIMOS-V INFERNOS these are imho the BEST conversions ever! basically these are all three episodes of Doom 1 rebuilt. all maps are loosely based on the originals but still completely different. when you play it the places seem familiar - ... but still a totally new experience with some very nice new secrets. GENIUS WORK! These are in my top 5 wads of all time! did a quick search and found this... don't know if the link is still working - but it should be up on idgames too http://www.wad-archive.com/wad/a336476fc14321b81ab07873660c24d3 Have fun! 0 Share this post Link to post
