Yes please. Preferably the hell skies. 0 Share this post Link to post
Devalaous Posted February 7, 2017 Mechadon said:That sky, as well as the starry sky with Saturn on it, was actually made to be a recreation of the TNT starry sky. The original TNT skies were going to be used in THT: Threnody, so I ended up making my own version to replace it (and the others). Oooh, nifty. TNT's skies barely held up over time, but were inspirations for both Revilution and Devilution. Would love to see redone versions of them and other PWAD skies of legend that arent too great in today's age. 0 Share this post Link to post
Dragonfly Posted February 7, 2017 Brilliant Skies Mechadon! Thank you for the many hours you must have put into this. :) 0 Share this post Link to post

If you would like, I could fiddle around with it a bit and attempt to make a variant like that. Ah, I see. I should use that trick to design a cloudy skybox. Nice idea. :) I tried to make one, based on your skybox texture. But it didn't go well than I expected from in-game, unfortunately. I should try a different method next time. 6 Share this post Link to post
Mechadon Posted February 9, 2017 That's a pretty nice combination idea antares! I think your only issue with it are the yellows in the upper half, otherwise it seems like it would work very well. I might take a stab at it as well if I get a chance. 0 Share this post Link to post

Death Egg Posted February 9, 2017 How many of these could be used in a wad using only public domain assets, like Freedoom for example? 0 Share this post Link to post
Voros Posted February 9, 2017 Way ahead of you Death Egg. Unfortunately, HAZESKY and space ones can be used, the rest are based on pictures from the internet, according to what Mech told me. 0 Share this post Link to post

I combined three sky textures created by Mechadon, and one from Hexen (which is slightly modified by myself with a starry night scene). Then I added a sun with lighting effect in the middle. 0 Share this post Link to post
Deleted_Account Posted February 9, 2017 The mountain range with the green sky is my favorite. All around great work, very impressive! 0 Share this post Link to post
Jaska Posted February 10, 2017 Great skies! Thanks Mechadon. Already started using them! 0 Share this post Link to post
Mechadon Posted May 24, 2017 (edited) Hi guys, I've got an update to share! I had a sky that someone wanted me to make for them, and I got around to doing that today. So while I was at it, I made a few more and added some from projects that have been released since v1. So here's v2 with 40 more skies (along with new bases, foreground stuff, and scraps). Box 'O Skies v2 [18mb] Here's a preview of a few of the new skies. I also included a little test map that let's you quickly toss in a sky to see how it looks. It's nothing fancy and it requires some SLADE 3 and TEXTURE1 editing knowledge, but it might be useful to someone out there. Like last time, I was too lazy to really test every new sky here :P. So if there's a cruddy looking sky, or if you see a bug or something that could be done better, let me know and I'll see if I can fix it. Thanks again to everyone who has left kind words, and an extra special thanks to all of you who have used these in your maps! More updates will likely come in the future :) Edited March 7, 2019 by Mechadon : removed busted mirror link 25 Share this post Link to post
Dragonfly Posted May 24, 2017 Beautiful work as usual, Mech! I'll be sure to use one or two of these in some upcoming work. Thanks :D 0 Share this post Link to post
leodoom85 Posted May 24, 2017 HOLY SHIT!!! That's some beautiful skies. Definitely I'll try these... 0 Share this post Link to post
40oz Posted May 25, 2017 whoa that veiny organic one on the bottom is hella surreal 0 Share this post Link to post
Deadwing Posted May 25, 2017 Woah, I'll definitely use them D: Amazing skies! 0 Share this post Link to post
SArais Posted May 25, 2017 (edited) More of those organic ones would be spot on for hell environments. Maybe one that could be used with a Warp/Warp2? Tentacle and face ones are really nice for those effects. Might be better as a backdrop to another skybox texture (ae; mountains, skeletons, demonic structures) though. Gorgeous skies all around; certainly hope a CC5 uses them. Edited May 25, 2017 by SArais 0 Share this post Link to post
Mechadon Posted May 25, 2017 Yea, I actually wanted to have a few more hellish sky options, so I made a couple specifically for this update. The flesh sky in particular I wasn't sure if it would work, but it came out pretty cool in the end I think. I may try to make some more like that in the future if possible. 0 Share this post Link to post
LordShadowZ Posted May 25, 2017 Even more awesome skies. I'm sure I can make good use of some of these, thanks! 0 Share this post Link to post

Death Egg Posted July 22, 2017 Any of these new skies public domain also? If possible, maybe for future versions you could find a way to differentiate free use ones in the wad itself? 0 Share this post Link to post
Relinquished Posted July 23, 2017 These are nothing short of stunning. Thank you very much for sharing your work! I've been on the look out for new sky textures, but I never expected to see something of this quality! I will make sure to credit you if I include some of these in my future projects :). 0 Share this post Link to post

The best I can say is "I don't know" because many of them are made up from stock photos I've collected over the years. And I probably wouldn't able to find sources for the majority of them. A few of the space skies can probably be considered public domain since the star backgrounds are hand-made and the celestial objects most likely come from NASA images (which I believe can be used for anything, correct?). 0 Share this post Link to post
Marscaleb Posted July 24, 2017 These are amazing! That said, I'm curious how hard it might be to make some of these into actual skybox textures. I could probably pop a lot of them into a 3D program and map them around a cylinder, but getting images for the top and bottom planes would be challenging... 0 Share this post Link to post

Mechadon Posted March 7, 2019 (edited) Yo! So lately I've had an itch to make some new sky textures. I figured it would be a good time to expand the pack since there are some skies that I've made that have been released in a couple of projects (D64D2, Vargskelethor map project #2, etc). I also wanted to work on some new ideas I've had for a while. So I've been working on this over the past couple of weeks. Well, I may have went a bit overboard with the new additions, and I had to finally stop myself tonight. There are about 407 new skies, with a grand total of 562 sky textures! Don't get too excited though, many of them are color variations. I think I counted about 32 unique new skies of varying designs. Some of the older skies got updates and extra color variations. I thought about making a few more variations, but like I said I figured now would be a good time to stop :P Box 'O Skies v3 [66mb] Here's a preview of the new stuff: As usual, I wasn't able to test all of these. So if you spot something that looks bad or broken, let me know. Some ideas came out better than others so expect quality to vary. I kept most of the base images and there are also some .xcf files if someone wants to dig into them (check the scraps folder). Also I'll reiterate that anyone can use these in any way they see fit. All I ask for in return is a small little credit blurb somewhere :). If you have a request, let me know and I'll see what I can do. More updates may come in the future! One more thing to note - there's some animated fire sky textures included (they are in a separate folder). I found a dumb little GIMP plugin that let me make them. I didn't test them but hopefully they'll work out ok. They'll probably look best when animated at around 4 to 8 tics per frame. If you try them out, let me know how they look.
