Switching to Slade

XWE fucked me. Im switching to SLADE. Will my wads that i've edited with XWE be harmed when i open it with SLADE?

Shouldn't be any problems, though when in doubt - make backups.

Click the MAPINFO lump in slade and choose "View as text" if it's nto automatically showing up. I know for sure I can view mapinfo lumps and the like in slade no problem.

I was showing a Doom acolyte how to use Slade3 the other day, but I hadn't used it much myself, so I found myself saying this a few times: "There was an easy way to do this in XWE, so - oh wait, nevermind, I just figured out how to do it here. Oh nice, this is definitely better." The switch-over should be easy to make.

ok but other stuff like in XWE i made a lump and changed it to type 0. i can't read that in SLADE and i need to because thats all my DECORATE actors

Type 0 is meaningless to me.

Anyway, if for some reason it's not detected as a text lump, you have a big button marked EDIT AS TEXT and you can click that to EDIT AS TEXT. I know the notion seems frivolous, but EDIT AS TEXT does really serve to EDIT AS TEXT.

With MS-DOS or UNIX line terminators?

That it was.

Same here, and it doesn't appear to be one of XWE's internally supported types either.

Mu.

Joke aside, it uses Scintilla, so it's able to deal with CR, LF and CRLF.

Hahahahahaha you dope!

@Gez: will SLADE3 come with a hex editor sometime?

Maybe? There's basically everything needed for it under the hood; the only part missing is the UI.

Wouldn't it be wise to change 1337CyberdemonxX's link, as it links to a virus?

A virus? Looked like gay porn to me, but I could be mistaken. I agree about changing the link - or nuke it along with the poster's account.

You mean I got infected with an unidentified STD though the Internet? :-S

The Report to Mod button was useful while it existed.

Found it amusing people are actually clicking the link instead of just looking at the URL. It's pretty obvious where it goes to X)

Even when not in doubt - make backups.

I'm amazed how many people complain that program X trashed their WAD. Do so many people really only work with one copy of their masterpeice? I male a long-term back up of any new work every day and have incremental backups along the way too.

If anything does trash my files* I rarely have to re-do much work because I will have a relatively recent backup to restore with.

*also, I very rarely have anything trash my files any way, which leads me to wonder what some people are doing to be losing their work all the time.

In my case, the most common cause of grief is exiting from Chocorenderlimits back to Doom Builder, so I usually save before testing.

I get the feeling most people complain about things like XWE because they don't know how it works.

Here's a hint: lump order is extremely important when editing your WAD. If even so much as one lump is moved a position, the entire WAD gets screwed over.

The fix? Make sure if you're adding something it's either at the top before the MAP lump or at the very bottom after everything else. If you add it somewhere in between, your WAD will get messed up.

Also, SLADE3, XWE, and Doom Builder 2 automatically back up your files to my knowledge. Every edit in XWE and SLADE3 creates a back up automatically and Doom Builder 2 creates a back up after every save. If this is not happening when you use them, I suggest you look into it.

What? I don't think so.
You should not put shit under a map pointer which should not go there and the stuff under a map pointer should be in a specific order. But moving shit around as far as flats, patches and such goes does not matter at all much.

That said. Slade3 kicks XWEs ass any day of the week.

I'm saying your stuff should go at the top or bottom. Texture order is not all too important, but the order of scripts, things, etc. is important. Adding stuff at the bottom never hurt as if it goes at the top, XWE will automatically put it there upon seeing this. If there's no harm done in putting it at the bottom of the list of lumps, it'll leave it there (which rarely there is because the default lumps for your WAD were not moved around).

I used SLADE3, and honestly, I saw no difference. All I saw was .ogg support. Other than that, the features looked to be the same. I was obviously missing something that I won't bother to tinker with (since I don't add stuff that really requires advanced editing), but in all honesty I prefer XWE. The only problem I've run into with it are those which were due to my ignorance with the program itself (which actually applied to all programs like these).

Ironically the first time I used SLADE it ended up messing up my map real bad (it changed the lump order, despite me not changing anything nor adding anything). Was really weird as it never happened again.

I don't see why opening WADs with Slade3 that you edited with XWE would screw up the file. I sometimes use different editors for different things on my WADs, and they work OK. So I don't see why you shouldn't open XWE edited WADs with Slade3.
