So. After the immessurably mediocre success of URE2020, I wasn't done. Not by a long shot.
As I had hinted at (a few times) during that project in 2020, ideas for an "Episode 2" were already in my mind back in 199X.. and in 2010 I even made an E2M1 and an E2M8, while, sadly, only E2M1 survived the crash.
The reason I never uploaded E2M8 was because it wasn't done yet (what a lofty apporach, only uploading things when you're done ^^). It was only 1/5 along, more or less- but if you know the size of my maps, you'll understand that losing that "one fifth" was already bad enough. Self-created problem, though. Once I'm done whining, I'll recreate it nevertheless (like I did with E1M9 in URE 2020). It had some nifty concepts!
So where am I at, with this?
Well- I haven't really started yet. I'm still going through the "finished" version of URE2020 and tweaking a few things that I noticed after the fact.
Parallel..ly? In parallel? Uhm.. At the same time, I test-played my E2M1 again and.. aside from way too much shotgun ammo (an ongoing pattern with me back in the day because I like Sergeants Shotgun Dudes).. the map already plays quite well. It's also rather compact (by my measures) at roughly 3800 x 5400 map units.

The problem with E2M1 is, that I foolishly thought I could hijack "thing 70": The unused (in Doom 1), misaligned burning barrel.. but then I found out that you can't really replace IWAD sprites for Vanilla Doom without using Dehacked (correct me if I'm wrong!). I had thought that maybe it would be as easy as replacing the TITLEPIC or the intermission map. Silly me xD
I have no problem using Dehacked for replacing outro texts and map / mission names.. and I have enough faith in "my ability to use examples and readmes" to actually create a working Dehacked patch file to add my own "burning barrel replacement". However I don't want something "integral" like the correct display of the first (literal) thing you see in the first map.. to be dependent on something that has to be manually loaded in addition to the WAD itself, to work with Vanilla Doom. Since URE is all about.. Vanilla safety.
For reference, this is the first thing you see when E2M1 starts (in the 2010 version, at least):

So I am probably just going to remove those instances of "thing 70" from the map again and use "flickering lights" sectors instead.
Seeing how I am working on 1: the aftermath of URE 2020 and 2: the subject of this forum.. uhm.. subject at the same time, I figured it would be safe to already create this new thread, since new updates will begin to trickle in, shortly.
