thecringefactor Posted August 15, 2023 (edited) Hello everyone! It’s time. I’m releasing this a few days before DOOM’s 30th anniversary (so my post won’t get buried too soon), and on December 6th to correspond with the title. This is a DOOM2 map is for GZDoom only because of the .udmf format. Freelook, jumping, and crouching are recommended but not required. There are, however, some secret tiny doors on the walls (because my real house has them, quite a few!). Right now, this is only an exploration map to show all I’ve done over the past 7 months. It’s a huge experiment to ask, “what if I used this Doom editor like 3D software that would be goofy.” Please, please distribute if you enjoyed the content so far! More to come! It gives me motivation. 6066.zip Also, I’ve attempted to release an overview video here: FAQ & Old August 2023 Post: Quote Intro So here we are, finally. It’s been a long time since I started, about late April or early May, since a lot of learning was involved initially, getting used to the controls, a crushing school and college schedule (finals yay), and last but not least, me being fresh to DOOM. I planned on releasing a public video on my progress once I finished everything except the custom textures and scripting. Well, actually, I’d say these two things are very well the other two thirds or three quarters of this project… Anyways. [video removed: outdated walkthrough of map] So What is This? This is 6066.WAD because it’s my house number. And the fact that it’s an old thing built in the 50s with tons of lovely hidden holes in the wall, tiny doors, an attic and crawl space (upcoming cause that requires some very extra things I’m planning), and a very safe forest full of snakes, poison ivy, and tiny things that bite you but you can’t see them ever. These two things make it INEXCUSABLE not to turn this place into a WAD. I am not going to spoil too much because I don’t want to make any promises before I actually test any theories. If anyone has by chance heard of The Normal City and Hmm… in Roblox, that’s the mischief I have planned. I want to test out what I can do with the subjects of DOOM references, 2010s internet humor (sorry, the new stuff tends to be funny due to trendiness or postmodernism), but also other interactables to create an environment, such as changing what’s on TV.Why this goal? Well, as a zoomer, growing up in the 2000s-mid 2010s were the best time for me. So I chose a tribute while forcing myself to learn all I must to set up all the smoke and mirrors to assemble my world. Is This related to myhouse.pk3 at all? Nope, no. Given, I did initially stumble across a video that said “my house” back when it first released. Being in the dark ages of college and school finals, I didn’t even stop to watch videos back then. So I had no idea what it was about or that it was popular at all. I got the idea, “Oh, so it’s a popular thing in this community to model from life. I think that will be a good first project for me to learn the controls and practice translation from life to games.” Back then I jumped right into the classic DOOM community with the intention to create stuff, so here I am. My first introduction to DOOM was in February or March when I was taught the mechanics of raycasters and BSP engines, and I thought I should be more familiar with what I am learning by jumping in whatever these courses are talking about. Will There be combat? Well, I think it’d be a bore to deprive, so I will try to balance it out with instances for combat while allowing breathing room to take a look around and interact (combat/open world balance in technical terms). Though, once again, I’m still not the best at DOOM combat, being someone whose only games are mobile games or whatever can run on my potato laptop (not even Roblox can (not like I’ve played for years though…)). Is This All the Map There Is? There will be more map later, but this is the stage where the main starter area is done and it’s time soon to investigate scripts, get to know how I want this thing to move, rather than dawdling in tiny details in existing map and adding more motionless land. Extra Fun Stuff Here is an example of what some of the simpler environmental gags look like. Some of you may have seen this before posted in the Cursed Images thread. Though, I did remove the three extra Cacos later because the engine doesn’t read things with overlapping bounding boxes. But it gets the point across with just one too. Here is also some photos of my early blueprints (not obeyed at all!). I quickly discovered this was why: https://eev.ee/blog/2016/10/10/doom-scale/ , how the wacky proportions of a cartoonish world may not translate smoothly to real life. Edit: Later I found a way to add multiple cacodemons by using tiny middle textures instead of real ones. So in the actual wad there are now three instead of one. Final Words I decided to do a progress post at this milestone cause, well, let’s be honest. It’s my first time modding with DOOM. And my first time making a 3D world. Previously, my only modeling experience was a tiny cave on Roblox (before my laptop had a meltdown). So naturally, I’m yet another overhyped baby modder. And yes, I still think I’m very new because I learned a lot about the importance of planning out everything before diving in. I should’ve followed the blueprints closer after some revision in correspondence to (estimate) DOOM scale —> real life. And this is, after all, a replica of a real place. I have yet to gain experience making a normal DOOM map where you actually must think about level flow, how it affects combat and the implied story it tells, and how immersive it can be (the right amount of secrets and challenge to make one think “that was one level but I’d replay that”). Oh, forgot to add. Most important of all, by posting this—I came this far, so I’m forcing myself to move on. I made a promise to myself by opening the map editor, and now I make a promise to my readers by posting. Hope I didn’t talk too much. Thanks y’all for reading and being a welcoming community, especially to us newer peeps :) Edited December 6, 2023 by thecringefactor 18 Share this post Link to post

thecringefactor Posted August 26, 2023 (edited) Hellooo I return with more stuff. I will tend to update whenever I reach a major checkpoint. This time, I finished my room’s custom texturing. This will very likely be the only area in the house so heavy in textures due to, naturally, the creator wanting to emphasize personality and knowing one’s own mind the best. That’s another reason why I’m making this mod. As my first mod, I think it’s a good idea to use it also as a sort of visual introduction of me to the DOOM community. Outdated Progress Post No.1: Spoiler I don’t think I’ll be posting the other rooms individually unless one turns out to be particularly interesting. There are some places left undone like the drawers, wall secrets, and closet, but those will be done alongside other like areas upstairs and downstairs. Obviously, there’s a reason I waited until I modeled the entire house before texturing because the privilege of custom textures allows to get away with hyper detailed models without any real complexity. For example, the laptop in my room only cost two sectors and three custom textures, while the laptop downstairs—well, let’s assume I placed it in the exact same pose as upstairs to make it fair because in reality it’s on a slanted stand on a 3D floor table. Assuming this, it is comprised of four sectors, one being bottom half of the laptop, and the other three providing the shapes for the screen, where if the laptop is grounded on the floor, one 3D floor will be the screen and the other will be the top border (the other borders are floors). So as you see, it is very easy to get carried away with 3D floors and lose the novelty of getting creative with what DOOM’s functions already provide. So I reserved my custom textures for details that were too complex for sector art or for models too complex for DOOM’s functions. Here are some of my selected highlights: I’m busy as per usual. The source code is from my game Lavyrinthos and the open book is the Wolfenstein 3D black book. Anyone else happen to listen to these? Yakui the Maid, Lapfox, Neil Cicierega, Tally Hall. Our family used to use one of these CD players for years until it finally got lost while moving in 2022. I own one of the gaming chairs of all time. I stole one of those folding chair thingys they force you to sit on in grade school (I blew all my imaginary money on the setup and couldn’t afford even an office chair afterward) I drew these pictures when I was little (except for Doomguy, that was last week). thecringefactor Posted October 3, 2023 (edited) Second update. This time I finished my mom’s and sister’s rooms. Took a month 💀 Next time, there won’t be an update until I finish the rest of the house, outside, and some secret areas. Then the scripting stage will finally arrive. Outdated Progress Post No.2: Spoiler As per tradition, I post a few preview images along with the full video, but there’s only two interesting images this time because as I make more stuff, I find less and less interesting (only the most complex stuff). thecringefactor Posted December 21, 2023 I’ve been curious if anyone has found any of the secret doors yet. There are about 7 of them, one in a place that’s a bit unexpected (and a bit of a mental cartwheel to build haha). I know this thread isn’t that active but I just wanted to throw that out there to give people something to do in the meantime while I keep cooking 0 Share this post Link to post
Captain Mobius Posted December 21, 2023 Doom Builder is the best utility for creating a 3D map of your home. I have done it. I bet many here have also, as their first project. 1 Share this post Link to post

Yes, I believe even before the dawn of a certain 2023 map, models of houses, cities, any buildings from life are great references to model from life if beginners don’t have any prompts or don’t know how to design an entire blueprint from scratch due to intimidation or unfamiliarity with the controls. 0 Share this post Link to post
