which games did you regret buying

Cyberpunk 2077. Pre-ordered it, played about 3 hours, and I don't think I'll ever touch it again. Even if they fix every single bug I encountered, it just... isn't the right game for me. Also, the entire Witcher series. I got it as a bundle, but in all three games, the basic movement feels uncomfortable to an extent that makes the games unplayable. Maybe I should stay away from CDPR games in general. Oh, and Wolfenstein: the New Order. I hate when games have 2-hour-long tutorials; by the time I'd seen enough of the game to know it wasn't for me, I'd played far too much for Steam to allow a refund. But now I know to stick with the old DOS Wolfenstein games; those are more my speed.
  2. Like @Arrowhead said, the 'METAL' series is extremely versatile, and I tend to use them a lot. I also use BIGBRIK, especially BIGBRIK2, in nearly all of my maps. The SUPPORT and DOORSTOP textures I commonly use as dividers between texture changes, or for framing alcoves/details. COMPTALL shows up a fair bit in my maps, as does GSTONE. And STEP5 is by far my most commonly used step texture. The BROWN series gets used a lot, too. I don't think I've ever used ROCK4, TANROCK8, or half the ZIMMER series in any of my maps. The MODWALL and SKINMET series are also ones I rarely use.

    Post Your Doom Skies

Here's the sky I made for my Dumping Ground map, as well as an orange prototype version where the hills were too high to look right in that map. A woodland-hills sky I used in my latest 2 maps And a Hell Cavern that I'm gonna use in an upcoming project. Plus a FIREBLU version because I have no shame.
  4. To be perfectly honest, a lot of the stuff like the Mancubi shooting through the window were unplanned. I did notice that in testing and thought "yeah, that's cool," but the only reason that window is where it is, is that's how it looked in my dream. But sometimes I do find things like that accidentally forming in a level and decide to shape the map design around them; The presence of windows like that is what made me decide to use so many cacos, which in turn motivated me to make the level more interconnected so they could fly around more. As always, thanks for playing. I can't wait to see what I cook up next, either!

Holy heck E5M6 is dark. Can't see shit in this level.
  6. @Clippy I made sure a no-secrets run is possible, but far from easy on UV. Could be a fun "challenge run" I suppose!
  7. Ooh, I love to see a good old-fashioned demo file! Thanks for playing! I should've guessed there'd already be a dream.wad, unfortunately I couldn't think of a clever title for this one. For now, I've renamed it to DREAMTEK.WAD. I might think of something better in the future, though.
  8. @Biodegradable Thanks for the video, man! I always appreciate seeing how people play through my maps. Yeah, this one was a lot meaner than some of my other maps; I wonder if I ought to tone down the computer room. I think it's okay, but if enough people have trouble with it I'll delete a few zombies or something.
  9. Awesome, "challenging and frantic" was the vibe I was going for; glad to hear I succeeded in that regard! And I tried to include a good variety of secrets; good luck finding those last 3! As for the visuals: The aesthetic in this one was very much a result of what the level looked like in my dream - and it wasn't until I woke up that I realized what I had envisioned wasn't a level from The Shores of Hell. So, "generic techbase" was the result. But making an aesthetically memorable map is rarely my priority - just so long as each area within the level looks distinct enough that the player can navigate easily, I'll pretty much always just focus on designing gameplay over all else - for better or worse, I guess. My intention with the BFG was that even if the player gets it early on, its use will be limited by the amount of ammo available for it. Of course, if you find some of the other secrets as well, you might have plenty of ammo. I don't think it effects balance too much - but if other people take issue with it as well, I might remove some of the plasma ammo from around the map. And yeah, I don't usually do hot starts, but I love a good Berserk brawl. I think the majority of maps I've published have included a Berserk, actually.
  10. Well, that's why I implemented difficulty settings! It is a fair bit harder than some of my other maps, though - at least, that was my intention. I made sure it was possible on all difficulties, but I did balance UV with the intention that it should be very difficult if the player doesn't find at least some secrets.
  11. @Arrowhead Thanks for playing; I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm always trying to push the limits of my mapping ability - good to hear that seems to be working! The Supercharge secret was, I think, the second secret I added to this map. I try to include a variety of secrets, not just hidden doors! (tbh it took me a moment to work out which secret you were referring to; I always forget the term "supercharge," they're "soul spheres" in my mind). Oh, and there is a Super Shotgun in the map, for those who can find it!

    What are you listening to?

The new track from Jinjer that dropped this morning
  13. hah, I don't think I'd even heard of DOOM back then (well, I'd probably heard the title, but I didn't know what it was). Which is a shame, because it absolutely seems like my kind of project!
  14. I'm having a lot of fun making a DOOM 1 - style techbase. I just think all the computer alcoves and whatnot are neat!

Playing some more SIGIL. I love the dark spooky aesthetic of E5M5.
  16. Cool little map. The hot start with the Barons was really something. I almost did something similar in my Arcane Archive map, with Barons chasing the player around at the start, but, as you know, I ended up taking the gameplay in a different direction on that one.
  17. Some screenshots would be nice. People aren't likely to download a map if they have no real idea what to expect. Other than that; I always like to see vanilla DOOM maps, so I'll give these a try when I get a chance!

whats your highest play time in your steam library

My time spent in Starcraft or Warcraft II might rival this, but I don't know those numbers. Don't know how many hours I've spent in DOOM, either, but it's a lot (especially if you count testing half-made WADs I'm working on).
  19. A few nights ago, I had a very vivid dream where I was inside a DOOM level; an e1/e2-style techbase. Upon waking and realizing that it wasn't a real level, I immediately set about re-creating what I remembered from my dream in DOOM Builder (pictured) and over the past week or so I've been slowly building it into a full level. It's about halfway done now, I think.
  20. Yeah, I like to play these games as vanilla as possible, especially for my first playthrough. And if the original levels were designed with the intention that it wouldn't really be possible to use a variety of items in the heat of the moment, well, I'm glad that's how I played the game. The game would've been more fun with hotkeys, but, now that I think about it, a lot of the actual levels would've needed to be re-balanced. I'll keep it in mind when I start playing user-made levels, though.

    best dos games?

Actually, currently the best way to play Daggerfall is with the fan-made Unity port. It's got 99.9% feature-parity with the original, a ton of bugfixes (both gameplay- and performance-related), and mod support. Of course, it doesn't run in DOS, so not exactly what OP was asking for, but at least it doesn't crash if you look at it funny (which the original DOS version is prone to doing, even with patches). That said, Daggerfall is amazing and totally worth playing at least once.
  22. holy shit you can do that? I used the items quite a bit, but failing to quickly grab the item I wanted from the menu with the bracket keys was by far the most frequent reason I died. Combat would've been a hell of a lot smoother if I'd known about hotkeys. EDIT - okay, how do you make hotkeys for items? I had a look in the INFO menu in-game and saw no reference to it (other than Tome of Power being bound to Backspace), and I couldn't find anything of the sort when I ran SETUP.EXE. The manual doesn't make any reference to this, either, from what I read.

    best dos games?

I just finished playing Heretic; that was pretty fun. Blackthorne is a decent Metroidvania from the early days of Blizzard (and you can download it for free from their official website). I never got very far into it, but I've been meaning to give it another go sometime. Warcraft: Orcs and Humans is all right, albeit not as good as its sequel. The focus is a lot more on micromanaging individual units than in modern RTS games, partly as a result of the limited pathfinding requiring a lot of babysitting from the player. You can get it for cheap on GOG. It has a seriously cool soundtrack, too. The Elder Scrolls: Arena is an underrated gem. I did a full playthrough of it recently for my YouTube channel; it's not as in-depth or open-world as later entries in the Elder Scrolls series, but it's a fun little dungeon-crawler. It's officially distributed for free in several places, but the best place to get it is here, which gets you a pre-configured DOSBox with the fully-patched CD-ROM version of the game. You may also want this mod to remap the controls to something more modern. And of course, the various DOOM games should go without saying!
  24. I didn't have much of a problem with that (except for the Maulotaur), although I did find the Crossbow only really effective against lower-tier enemies. Most fights, I ended up spamming the Hellstaff, maybe with a few blasts from the Phoenix Rod first to soften the enemies up. I was honestly kind of surprised that I never ran out of ammo for the Hellstaff. I love Amid Evil; it's great. Beautiful visuals, and the Star of Torment is one of my all-time favourite FPS weapons. Pinning enemies to the wall with it is so incredibly satisfying! Agreed; although I wish there were more textures, and I didn't always care for the level progression, the map geometry itself was one of the things I liked most in Heretic.
