    Hexen style Hub Levels?

http://zdoom.org/wiki/MAPINFO/Cluster_definition It is defined in the mapinfo lump. Scroll down, it's the last setting to be discussed: "hub Indicates that this cluster is a hub. When leaving a hub, the game will remember the contents of the level when the player left it and restore the level to that state when the player returns to it. Moving to a different cluster will cause the game to forget the state of the levels in this hub in order to save memory. Each level a player visits in a hub uses memory (about 20k for a typical level), so it's probably a good idea not to have too many levels in a single hub. Just how many is "too many" is arbitrary. Unless you use very large levels, you could probably use 50 levels in a hub, and only about 1 meg would be required to keep track of the state of each level."

Go hit up an admin, I'm sure they'd love to accommodate your request. I mean, how dare I have an opinion that differs from yours, I must be some kind of jerk, huh?

Foods which shouldn't go together but do

That's like a deliciously warm, soft resses' pieces of epic proportions... I'm going to make one I think.

Hey, sometimes, you forget what key you assigned use to :P
  5. It did make those cops lose track of time on a mindless activity (granted, a real fun activity, but still mindless)...

You're taking any of this seriously? You do remember that the discussion is about video game bosses right? I mean, we're not talking about solving world hunger or how to radically advance nanomanufacturing... I'm just posting while I watch some random documentaries...

So then a switch is also a boss, because you can't complete the level any other way than to hit the switch. Do see how that line of logic breaks down? Of course you don't see top-end monsters in the early stages of a game, you're just going to have people quit playing before they make any progress. That has nothing to do with them being bosses or not, and more to do with gameplay balance. In the beginning, your best weapon is going to take you 5 minutes to take down one cyberdemon, let alone a few of them, so obviously you're not going to throw them at the player straight out of the gate, but that doesn't make the monster a boss. That'd be like having a baby fight a 6th grader, and I think it's safe to say we agree that it would most *******ely be a 1-way fight, unless the 6th grader has some form of terrible disease or complex of diseases that would make the fight an even fight. And yeah, I forgot that all the sides of the block in the middle are exit "switches".

See, and that's exactly my point. It's very boss-ish, but just not quite there. Some of those championship modes are fxxing tough though, I swear they cheat >.< EDIT: Because they are obstructions to the objective, not the objective. The objective is to beat the level, they stop you from doing so; the only difference between those levels and dead simple is the lack of an exit switch. Removing a switch a boss does not make.

Yeah, that was my bad, sorry about that. Halo 1 for one example, the entire sports genre (which I really don't play, so maybe NBA Jam or Monster League Football have bosses, but for the most part sports games are bossless), most simulation games don't have bosses (flight, person, city, nation, etc.), I can't think of any RTS games that have bosses, and those are just the ones off the top of my head. The majority of games, especially violence based games, do have bosses, I'm not saying that bosses are bad, I'm saying bosses in FPS games are bad because it's just going to be a gimmick fight, and usually they're boring, so for the most part, I feel that FPS games should stay away from them.

There is no boss in that game. You guys do know that games don't have to have bosses right? I'm not trying to be a dick with that statement, I'm just making sure you're aware of that. There are entire genres of games that don't have bosses... Oh heaven forbid I upset you, you might just rap at me again *shudder*. And thanks Ralphis! I appreciate your input, you've clearly put me in my place -_-

    Quake

Did anyone else have an issue with FOV editing where their weapons disappeared? I don't mean *poof* you're stuck with the axe, I mean you shoot nails from... the hole in your chest? Happens to me in both quake and quake 2 for some reason...

Orbital Drop Shock Trooper And yes, I understand what you're saying, I just don't agree. The only difference between those levels endings and the dead simple level ending is that you don't have to bother hitting a switch. I don't see how the lack of a switch makes them a boss, miniboss, sure, but not a legitimate boss.

Halo 3 : ODST Launches Tuesday

Seems to me that there are several people who are interested in my opinion, why else would they be posting responses that at least have reasoning behind them, rather than saying "lol u r stupid", like yourself ^_- You're right, there is no "science" to it, but the reasons for those monsters being considered bosses are BAD reasons to call them a boss. Sorry that you don't agree because you're fucking 12 and can't handle someone disagreeing with you. Who did I berate? Oh, you and Use3D. Seeing as how you two fucking idiots are the ones who started flaming me for dare voicing my opinion on YOUR forums, I don't really consider your statement to be true. Seeing as how I've been quite jovial with everyone else, even when we disagree, I'd say you're just fucking stupid and need to learn about a little something called context. If I call you a fairy faggot with a smiley after it, I'm fucking with you, if I call you a fairy faggot and go on to pointing out why I think you're a fairy faggot, then chances are, I think you're a fairy faggot. So I'm soooo fucking sorry that I offended you, the great visplane overflow, master of the universe. See, this is the kind of post that I make fun of someone for, because it says nothing of substance, and the only thing it has in it is an insult. Wow, such great, thought provoking work you did there. If you don't care what I have to say, don't read my fucking post. Is that so hard? Heaven forbid you think before you do, I mean, what kind of jackass does that? I'm glad that none of you asshats care what I think, because guess what, we're on equal footing there. If you think a boss is any monster that does more damage and has more hitpoints than the rest of the monsters, or they're used in a gimmicky way, then congratulations, your criteria for bosshood is waaaaaay too low, not to mention your sense of design can't be that great either because there's no challenge in circle strafing, or hiding around a pillar. Some people, like myself, enjoy an actual challenge from a boss, not just an ammo dump. Monsters are a means to obstruct the player from objectives; bosses are objectives in and of themselves. Of course, you could argue that the episodes that require you to kill those particular monsters to complete the map make those monsters bosses, but I don't see that as a valid argument because the boss is still just a normal monster, who happens to be used in a gimmicky way. If you don't agree with that, fine, agree to disagree. If you don't agree with that and want to continue the discussion, then post something of substance or shut the fuck up, I don't see the problem here. Well, aside from the entire discussion being entirely off-topic. I just played through both ultimate doom (not just ep4, but all 4 eps) and doom 2 not two months ago to get a feel for the environment again. I played doom 2 for years when I was younger (well after quake came out, I refused to even play quake because it "wasn't as cool as doom"), so yes, I've played them both (and am currently playing through plutonia, then on to TNT). This doesn't make them special or unique monsters, it makes them the leaders of their respective hordes of hellspawn, who in turn take orders from (presumably) the Icon of Sin. So again, at best, they're minibosses. Ultimate Doom is literally the link between doom and doom 2, and at the end of ultimate doom, when you defeat the spider mastermind, it specifically states that you've fought your way back out of hell, and are now back on earth, which has been taken over by hellspawn. Since this is IDs own vision, it makes no sense to call them bosses because they are neither unique, nor does their defeat even imply the end of the hellspawn invasion, merely the completion of some other objective, such as sending on the last survivors of the human race, or freeing the doomguy's hometown from hellspawn control, and so on and so forth. The "storyline" itself demotes them from boss status because they are simply big monsters (minibosses at best) who are in between you and your final objective; to kill romero. The bits you highlighted only prove to further my point, they're at best minibosses, who the creators of the game themselves saw as mundane enough to be included as normal enemies in the direct sequel. So all you've done is show that you can't read. Where in that text does it say "you've defeated the boss of doom"? Oh, you mean it doesn't? Do you think that's because the objective of doom 1 is to escape from hell after reclaiming the bases, and the objective of doom 2 is to purge the demons from earth and stop the hellspawn invasion, and that those monsters are in fact just normal monsters meant to stop you from your objective, just like any other monster in the game? Icon of Sin is the only boss in the classic doom series (haven't finished doom 3 so I can't speak to that), the other monsters are, at best, minibosses, who get recycled into normal monsters.
