    Vestibule (My first Map)

Lol!! Well, I had to; the toaster was busy making my airline reservations... EDIT: This WAS fun. The balance is excellent, the traps were sneaky but not obscure. Keep doing this stuff! This was on UV, first try, which is odd for me. I usually try EVERYTHING out on HMP and it's the default on my Zandronum but can't seem to remember what I was thinking when I chose UV this time? Maybe I was just in the mood to kickass or have my ass kicked, hmm....

    ZDaemon 1.10.23 has been released

Cool! Haven't been spending much time on the ZDaemon side of Doom lately. But old man Winter is headed this way and this will come in handy when I'm drying the slush off of my bod from shoveling. And, believe it or not, I have a six-map DM wad in the works for ZDaemon/Odamex. Maybe make it by Doom's 30th birthday? Maybe January/February? Depends on this other project I'm working on.

How do I change the hud?

Personally, I chose to bound my HUD's graphics between SB_START and SB_END, which I have named that way as SB == Status Bar. Nothing stops you from loading a HUD of your choice for EVERY game you play as long as you're playing with a Doom port which supports more than one WAD file loaded. Here's a sample game start command line for my use case: zandronum -iwad myDoomDirectory/doom2.wad -file myDoomDirectory/kickassMod.wad -file myDoomDirectory/MyHUD.wad Obvs., if you're in Windows, not the Linux I'm in, you'd want to use backslashes (\) instead of the forward slash (/). myDoomDirectory indicates whatever the PATH is to where you keep your WAD files. kickassMod.wad here would be whatever game you're trying to run, e.g., av.wad, requiem.wad, equinox.wad, etc. MyHUD.wad means whatever WAD holds the HUD you wish to be used. Since a dedicated HUD WAD holds ONLY your custom HUD, AND it's the LAST WAD LOADED on this command line, it will be the HUD used in game. If this solution doesn't work for you, please read any conflicting documentation which comes with whatever Doom port you are using. Have fun!

    Popular port?

Yah, I began with DOS exe-compatible maps too. Not long after I started mapping, slopes were invented. I noticed they weren't compatible with the DoomLegacy I was using at the time so I stuck to vanilla. Next time around, I wanted to use some custom textures. This didn't break compatibility either once I got my head wrapped around the differences between a texture and a flat. But now I like to make my own animations and sometimes there just aren't enough cell positions available in a stock Doom monster replacement. Too, I really like the ability to use Bright in my DECORATE code. So I still map some for vanilla-ish but the majority of my work targets Zandronum now. Obvs., that means my crap works on the (LG)Zdoom too. I just got Woof! installed on my Linux box this week so I could play a couple of wads that use DSDHACKED. I might look into that in the future.. if I ever get caught up with the projects I've already got baking in the oven.

    When did you meet Doom?

OMG! I forgot. My computer was an AMD386dx-40Mhz and yes, our network setup was with those damn 10base2 nics! I forgot all about that coax cable/bnc connectors/and terminators thing! I'm not saying to ever sell but you need to pull it from the attic and take pictures of that stuff to add to your post here!

    When did you meet Doom?

1995, had a roommate who had Doom, Doom 2, Heretic and Hexen. I never bothered to get into it. I was busy at the time with a game called Corridor 7. Had this other friend who had me into Wolf3d, Spear of Destiny and Rise of the Triad earlier. 1997, different roommate situation entirely. Roommate and friends wanted me to play deathmatch Doom with them. IPX/SPX stuff was a hassle and one of them ended up getting me to install Windows 95 for the first time. Luckily it was OSR2.0 as I had a job dealing with the two earlier versions of Windows 95 on customer's PCs and it was the biggest pain in the A$$! I still preferred my junky OS/2 Warp 3.0. About this time also tried to work with Slackware Linux too and my roommate and I got a kick out of my first experience of "kernel panic" ~ too funny to us I guess. Can't say I really got into playing Doom until maybe 2002. By this time, I was helping raise my girlfriend's two children, boys, who I introduced to Doom about 2003. So that would be about the time I started with the Doom editors (beginning with DoomCAD) and got sucked into this Doom vortex I'm still in today. So, Doom may be about to turn 30 but I've only been into it for 20 years. I'm not about to do the maths for my age, just know I dropped out of college in 1985.

    Doom 1 or 2?

Well, it's a partial solution because what I have to sell you here only works in ZDoom-based ports. I tested good in Zandronum. All magic accomplished because DECORATE. The code is documented so I recommend you read it. fleshyMission.zip
  12. I just got my box out of storage last week. In the past, I did some recording of the output of Doom MIDIs played by this. I really liked the sound of this unit, a Roland SC7, and that's when I developed a much better appreciation for Doom music. I think I originally recorded to WAV and then did my conversion/compression down to MP3 so I could take the tunes to go into my car. The keen observer will note the $3.99 Goodwill price tag..., yes, that's right!

    Who's your favorite villain?

That was pretty good... I'm big into villains. In movies, it just takes WAY better actors to pull off being the villain. I've often been disappointed with some of the villains in James Bond movies. For instance, I love me some Christopher Walken, but as a villain in that Bond movie, A View to a Kill, not so good. The real Walken experience can be seen and felt in True Romance, which, is one bloody-ef'en movie! Now, David Warner always does an excellent villain. He played both Sark and Dillinger in Tron. That's one villain each for the real and virtual worlds. But he shines as Evil in the Gilliam movie, Time Bandits. Some actors just have the face to play an awesome villain. I don't know the actor's name but Eddie the Dane in Miller's Crossing (an early Cohen Bros. flick) is awesome. But if you're going to have to make me choose?
  15. My vote is to take all crappy maps from this project and any others from "failed mission attempts", bundle them together and release as the Crapulus Congromulated Compilation.

    kmetal 2018

I'm sorry, I don't do pk3 directory-type resources. The textures, in my case here, 3SWGS0 and 3SWGS1, are in between my PP_START and PP_END entries in my WAD file. I'm assuming that you can do as you've outlined above, the switch textures are in the /textures directory and the ANIMDEFS would be in the root, wherever you keep a DECORATE, SNDINFO or MAPINFO lump as well.

    Custom enemy sprites

To see things "the deprecated way", using DECORATE, download any one of my monsters at http://chapsoftware.com/monstas.htm. Each is in their own WAD file complete with DECORATE code, all the sprites that compose each of a monster's views/actions as well as any additional sounds. They can be loaded up along with another map wad as is, or can be picked apart and combined into a project of your own choosing. These should help you as a framework for pumping out your own monsters.

    Quake II's soundtrack is incomplete

I didn't think I ever recalled any of the music from Quake II. Though Quake II is my favorite of the original series of three games, most of my time was spent playing deathmatch levels, some in the original and some add-on content. Therefore, I have no affection nor affinity for this Rob Zombie track. After a quick musical playthrough of the soundtrack, the only songs I even recognize are Descent Into Cerberon and Climb. I guess that's a huge difference between my perceived experience between Doom and Quake. With Doom, I'm intimately familiar with all that MIDI music. The Quake's? Not much at all.

Is Project Brutality hated in Doomworld ?

Some odd years ago ( > 5 ), I had a DooM LAN party night at my apartment. I believe I had six game stations hooked up. Besides sampling my latest work at the time, I also ran through a few other things I'd recently been collecting. 8-bit deathmatch comes immediately to mind. Brutal Doom was another mod we played with. It was fun as I'm that weirdo who likes to play deathmatch WITH monsters: "easybake gets shredded" Anyhow, like the 8-bit DM mentioned, Brutal Doom was fun for a short go but then we moved on. What I can't imagine doing is using Brutal for a single-player game! Really, it seems like it was made for DM w/monsters. For single-player, I'd be more inclined to use a mod like Psychic, ScoreDoom or even Kruglyi. What is "Project Brutality"?

Ports that do/do not support >128px tall textures

I know width can be a problem too; that powers of 8 rule in effect in ZDaemon as I'd had a door which was 192px wide which it tutti'd all over me. Ended up making a new door 128px wide to compensate.
