I'm okay with linear maps if the progression makes the map feel non-linear. IE: Lots of turns, overlapping rooms, backtracking, etc.

Anyone else still plays a bit of Super Mario 64 every now and then?
molten_ replied to hardcore_gamer's topic in Everything Else
It's actually a pretty fun game if you can get past the terrible voice acting. I'm glad Nintendo dropped that with the SMG series ... at least, partially (I still think Peach talks). -
Yeah, same here. It took me a while to grasp the player's size relative to everything.

Yeah I still play it from time to time. It was actually the first game I ever remember playing. -
Cool idea. I think it could have been implemented a bit better, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Couldn't figure out how to get past the eastern wall in the northern room, I think that's the only secret I didn't find.

Well, that worked for Minecraft.

Fun map, kinda short though. I love your mapping style.

I'm way too busy with other things to work on this. Sorry. -
It's cool to see that kickstarter is gaining popularity.

Doom 2 The Way id Did [Final Beta Released!]
molten_ replied to Alfonzo's topic in WAD Releases & Development
I agree with HellBent, I think the concept of the map was really cool. Took me a bit to figure out but once I understood it totally clicked. -
One of my favorite secret levels is the color themed one in Alien Vendetta ... I think it's called Killer Colours? Anyway, I remember really liking the visual aesthetic.

I'd come up with the cheesiest name I can think of and go with it, because I honestly don't care. For example, if I were to make a Heretic wad I would call it Helletic. Shit like that.

Imperfect Hatred - Post your 6 hour maps!
molten_ replied to zodiac's topic in WAD Releases & Development
Uh yeah lol, I must have skipped over the 6 hour part. I was more thinking 1 hour. If I have time this weekend I might. -
I never really grew up with Half Life 1, but I bought it on steam back when they sold it for a dollar and I remember enjoying it a lot. Can't really say anything about Halo. Never really got into it.

This is one of my favorite things to do if I'm suffering a creative block; For some reason I always produce my best work when under time constraints. Programming (Using the term loosely), art, level design ... you name it. I might give this a shot tomorrow if I can find time :) -
Sounds good. I'll try to get map10 finished soon. Been having mappers block too :S

Wow that looks pretty shitty. Not even from a usability standpoint, it's just ugly.
-
Wow that was a tough and intense map. Lots of fun :) Sent you my critique.

Oh man, I'm a huge fan of this guy's games. If you haven't tried his others check them out: http://www.mattmakesgames.com/ He mostly does retro platformers with an insane difficulty curve. Probably my favorite game of his is An Untitled Story. It's not flash though ... My favorite flash game of his is probably Give Up Robot (Both 1 and 2).

Eh, I agree with Technician. Usually ads don't annoy me and it helps support the people I enjoy watching so I'm cool with it.

Great map Purist, sent you my critique. Most of the issues I found were graphical, gameplay wise it's really good. Hmmm, did I miss your PM? I'll have to check now ... Well shit, I did! Sorry about that Memfis :( Do you have an updated version I could test?

I'll be honest, planning usually gets me nowhere. Most of the time I find myself over-analyzing things to the point where the map will never live up to my insane expectations, so I tend to scrap it; Either that, or I'll get really discouraged and end up bloating it with unneeded gimmicks, realize I ruined the map, and then scrap it. I'm just now learning to lay out a general theme in my head and work from there. It's actually a lot more fun that way, but it leads to rougher maps that have to be detailed/fixed up afterwards.

I remember the GameCube/Xbox's graphics blowing me away. I doubt consoles will ever see that huge a leap in graphics ever again. The level design in the super mario galaxy series really impressed me. Both of the games were creative as hell. Some of the stuff in Uncharted 2 impressed me. Oddly enough I can't think of many PC games that impressed me, but that's probably because I didn't really grow up with a PC.
