  1. Almost every map that i've finished: AV ambushes, monsters behind exit doors, lousy visuals, weak encounters.
Troll Fortress: tried this one before noticing that the full megawad is available, solid gameplay and visuals. This one actually made me interested in the project.
MAP01: Every boss and three AVs on the first map used clearly without the knowledge HOW to use them properly. There is a chaingunner behind exit door, and the exit door is behind a boring "battle" with Spider Mastermind. Well, welcome to mapping, cannonball.
MAP02: The final battle is easily skipable, and all its monsters can be easily killed from safety. Looks ridiculous. Also, too much ammo for SS, plasma would make encounters more interesting. Nice visuals.
MAP03: Oh god, green goo gives no damage which makes keeping balance on those walkways pointless. The exit is ridiculous, it's a wall behind crates. Who the fuck exits through the wall, what was logic behind this? Was it so hard to make a tunnel with a turn? Even more, it is guarded by a trigger that spawns a chaingunner and Baron.
MAP04: Oh boy. You can run around completely ignoring monsters and even on such open space they can get into a lot of fights with each other.
MAP05: The elevator to the green goo room should also be activated with Player walks over.
MAP06: What's the point in those railings if they don't block player's fire? The map contains zero ammo, some textures aligned badly and all you see 90% of the time are those useless, pathetic, brown railings. The map ends abruptly.
MAP07: Wait, so you can submit maps that were already published? This is unfortunately unmodified WaterHQ.
MAP08: You run until you cross the exit linedef. Nice map for running, i think i saw an imp or two, but those might have been hallucinations.
MAP09: The completely dark room with imps and Pain Elemental AND Specter is such a bad fun-killing idea that i want to find and rape the author. Oh God, there's another dark room... now with chaingunners and a spider...
MAP10: Large slaughter map filled with mostly low-tier monsters. Encounters are weak, you can run out of the room after you triggered the ambush and all monsters will gather in a corridor to the room.

Oooookay, i really don't want to play further because i already know what's wrong with this project.

How many mappers can we get to contribute to a single project?

These are maps made (or finished after they were dug up from somewhere) only to be included in a project that has almost 0 requirements and no quality assurance, which means that people didn't have to try to make a good map, they only had to submit something. I've finished 11 maps, and only 3 of those are decent, everything else is either someone's first map or a lousy job. And the only thing that suppose to justify such amount of crap is this:

    Every mapper is different

A new map is not an achievement, an entertaining one is. Or in the case of a project with clear goals, the one that achieves them.

Trash the crap, make some real goals, implement QA, and try again.
(EDIT: Ah damn it, can't upload pictures now. Eh.)

  2. ... which was clearly what I was re-iterating

Clerly? Oh, sorry, i didn't see that in:

    What Doomuk said.

Just like i wouldn't see it in

    +1 DoomUK!

the levels themselves generally constitute the bulk of the time spent on the game(i.e. most players spend more time playing through the levels

What about shooting the monsters and racing and multiplayer?

    B) since Rage is a game that is centered around progressing through missions (as opposed to leveling up your character or weapons)

and shooting monsters and racing and multiplayer. Not a single objective argument.

There's also the issue of the amount of time spent on each, did that occur to you?

This wasn't in his post and don't tell me it was implied. And seriously, time? What, restaurants charge for time you spent there?

  3. What Doomuk said.

DoomUK said that something "is close to being objective". The statement can either be objective or subjective, there is no gradient. You sure you wanna repeat what DoomUK said?

In terms of the amount of content being offered

Yeah, i would like to hear those terms. Where is it written that 6 new areas, new skins and a weapon is fair amount of content for 5$? Not objective.

    Brilliant rebuttal.

Because comparing prices in one industry to prices in other is how economy works. Lets compare prices on video games with prices on sandwiches. And did you hear that people starve in Africa? Totally related to 25$ mounts for WoW.

  4. RAGE features health regen, which is the worst game mechanic in the industry. Iron sights are probably associated with bland military shooters like CoD and reduction of speed. And health regen.

Six new areas in the game is a pretty generous amount of content for $5, regardless of how you slice it.

    This is not objective.

After you people reminded me about expansion packs, i realized that a lot of them were indeed overpriced for the content that they've provided. Even more, i think that i've mixed community made content with official content when i've said that we used to receive a lot of things for free. Fuck it man, they always exploited the living shit out of us.

    ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER.

  5. "Can you be more specific?" question was towards Edward850 and the "patch-gun" for Quake 4 discussion.

I seriously doubt it takes that little to make a new map in RAGE. I imagine there has to be a collaboration between at least a dozen level designers artists and choreographers for each level and since each texture is unique, they practically have to paint every pixel.

You are stretching it too much.

If you want to make a Doom 3 mod that reaches Id Software quality (or surpasses it) you have to spend YEARS to complete it and you can't do it by yourself. Just look at Doom 3 Phobos and you'll see what I mean.

I'm pretty sure that Phobos is not the only mod for Doom 3. Again, "YEARS" and "id software level of quality" are vague presumptions.

since they can do a lot more, there is also a lot more work to be done.

The discussion was about difficulty of work, not amount. Also, presumption again.

  6. It was never marketed as "making things easier for designers"

In the first ever Rage video, at some conference or some shit, Carmack told how designers can edit textures on the fly, can "add their name on a texture".

except in the sense that they no longer need to worry about texture budgets.

Which makes things easier for the designer.

Now if they could finally release the editing tools.

Not until they milk people with DLCs.

  7. Your memory does not serve you well.

    Can you be more specific?

I wasn't aware that you have worked with mega-textures before.

Well, yes BUT back then stuff was much easier to make, especially maps.

Emmm, but i thought megatexture technology was supposed to make things easier for designers? It sure was marketed as such. Also, they are a team of professional developers, it's their work.

You're focusing on one small part of it and pretending the rest doesn't exist.

    No i don't.

I don't even consider Doom 2 to be a true sequel

Which is wrong, because it continues the plot. But yeah i understand what you mean. Still, much more better than DLCs.

  8. Quake 4 received Nailgun in a patch, if i remember correctly.

we have no proof that the Nailgun was actually cut, they might have made it just for this DLC.

And we will never receive that proof, only producers will decide what will stay in the game, will be given out for free or sold, not you, not even developers, not anymore. People who say that couple of skins, maps and a gun is a fair amount of content for 5$ forget that in the late 90s-early 2000s we received such content and more for free.

And it's being released over a year since the original release of RAGE.

They could've make a whole fucking expansion pack in that time.

Well, it's your money people, but you are killing the whole industry just for couple of hours of entertainment. Can you imagine super shotgun for Doom as a DLC for "only" 0.99$? Bizarre.

  9. Sorry for the long pause, my internet died. It's snowing.

    Let's not split hairs.

Yeah, because making someone a victim because he simply was near a shooting accident because "it doesn't matter if they get shot" is totally not hair splitting. You saw a gun? You are a victim!

If you really "live on the edge" every moment, than maybe a sudden comfrontation with muggers or other hostiles won't surprise YOU. But for most people it would be a rare enough event, I think. No?

Even soldiers on a war are not constantly on the edge. They execute instructions and techniques, like looking around, covering each other, "slicing the pie" by looking at each side of the room before entering it and so on. No different than looking at each direction before crossing the road (erryday life). Also, "keeping your eyes open" part literally means "to look around with your eyes open to notice things", not "to suspect a criminal in every shadow".

Are you seriously basing your opinions on extreme cases that were so extreme that somobody deemed it worthy of own wiki article?

Shootout is not an extreme case, plenties of killings are described in Wikipedia.

What does World War II have to do with the North Hollywood shootout?

You asked about the word "casualty", i showed you where and how it is used.

  10. Which, again, implies having received combat training/conditioning, or at least having acquired it through a life on the streets ("steet smarts").

Nooo, it implies looking around with your eyes open. It's not like soldiers or hobos (those who live on the streets) acquire some sort of thug radar.

What happens to your body when you realize that the individuals near you are TOO close and NOT well intentioned

I run in the direction away from him, or attack first, if i'm sure i'm in good position. Dudes, you don't need to be a martial arts "expert" or a soldier to understand that you must control your body, you do it everyday when you cross a road, use heavy machinery on a factory you work at or at work in general. I'm not saying that you don't need to learn how to defend yourself against various street dangers, but i know that you don't need a black belt to not shit your pants when you see a chav moving at you, you need self-control which perfectly can be acquired through erryday life.

    Not a counterargument.

Well of course, how can there be a counterargument if there was no argument to counter?

Neither is your anecdotal evidence. "Look, this one time, these people had guns and they didn't manage to kill anyone: this proves that guns are safe and harmless."

No, that proves that a gun in someone's hands is not an instant genocide. Your "combat helicopter" joke was much more funnier, i'll tell ya.

Ever hear of a thing called post-traumatic stress disorder?

This is more related to battle and taking someone's life than to firearms. Also, not a casualty.

  11. you won't have the time to use it, unless you always walk with the gun in your hands

You just need to be aware of your surrounding and the area you are in, that will prevent ambush at least at open space.

How quickly can you draw a can of mace from your purse/jacket, extend your arm (leaving it open to holds and yourself to attacks), and aim precisely enough right between someone's eyes before a blade gets lodged between your ribs or a hard brass knuckle destroys your face?

There's this thing called "moving away" and "dodging".

Too bad it doesn't work like that during all armed robberies.

    Not an argument.
