Hatred - Is there a line that can be crossed?
SuperflyJohnson replied to Infirnex's topic in Everything Else
Supposedly it was just removed due to lacking an ESRB rating? idk, game looks like it would get boring pretty quick but I'm glad it's back up all the same. -
Daikatana thread lives... again. The Lycanthir (because calling it a generic name like werewolf is soooo lame) can only be killed with the Silver Bitchclaw. You can knock it down with any weapon but they get back up if you don't claw it on the ground. Hey, at least you've actually got a good justification (besides the usual ones) to park your sidekicks at the start of the level for most of E3. Listening to Sup scream because a lil' bat frightened him gets pretty old. It's so bad it's beautiful. So much this, the whole Daikatana story is like a master class in how not to make games. The catastrophe that was its protracted development and the actual finished product serves to inform the rest of the development community at large, and I completely believe that video games are better for Daikatana having been a thing. Daikatana was the hero vidya deserved, but not the one it needed. Or is it the other way around. Whatevs, suck it down. That part was even worse in 1.0 if you can believe it. They at least had the decency to add in a climbable ceiling vent in one of the surrounding monkey cages after 1.0 so you could get Mikiko up to the top after she fails to make it onto the elevator with you (which happens pretty much every time). side note: E4 has some of the best music in the game IMO, particularly Mishima's Lab and Hideout levels.

I didn't just learn it, but around a year ago I was browsing the DoomWiki and learned that the pistol shoots perfectly accurately if you release the fire key between shots. Gave me new appreciation for the lowly pistol.

Is Knightmare still the only port that supports the mission packs? When I looked at ports like Berserker and XP I don't recall any having support for the expansions.

Holy longass thread Doomman. I confess that I have yet to complete a single Master Level for Doom 2, or Plutonia. I also played this deathmatch map which has gay porn plastered on the walls, making it literally a gayWAD. To my great shame and regret I never did call the number and play with them.

I'm not a fan of restarting a level without my stuff so I tend to savescum. I suffer from severe Backpack Separation Anxiety. On the other hand it always struck me a bit odd how Doomguy loses his inventory between episodes in D1; given that, perhaps it can be argued that there is some kind of precedent or justification for abiding by the level restart rules instead of savescumming.

What is the holy grail of Doom collectibles?
SuperflyJohnson replied to Doomguy #876's topic in Doom General
I think Carmack's materials for his famously intricate D&D campaign(s) where Romero unleashed the demons by acquiring the Big Sword have got to be some of the most influencing tabletop RPG scribblings in history. Aside from that I wonder if Tom Hall still has the original Doom Bible. -
Second Spec Ops TL, submit whoops n/m that's not an FPS where's the delete button. It doesn't work. Well I really like Spec Ops.

DOOM Retro v5.0.7 (updated October 21, 2023)
SuperflyJohnson replied to bradharding's topic in Source Ports
pfft how dare you not make DR exactly like ZDoom; check your coding privilege, shitlord. Henceforth all source ports shall be properly referred to as 'ZDoom clones'. Naturally this subforum will have to be renamed. -
DOOM Retro v5.0.7 (updated October 21, 2023)
SuperflyJohnson replied to bradharding's topic in Source Ports
I can't wrap my head around being 'forced' to use the keyboard to play Doom. As opposed to what, mouse-only? People still do that? Somebody's gotta keep the savage traditions alive I guess. If only there was some kind of external input device you could plug in as an alternative, a 'controller' if you will. But no, the fascist dictator of niche Doom ports imposes his narcissistic WASD ideology upon us beneath his jackbooted heel, woe. It's almost as if any given source port is a reflection of its author's desires and personal ideosyncracies that you don't have to use if you don't want to. This injustice will not stand, we'll fight the evil Doom Retro legions on the forums, we'll fight them in the servers, we'll fight them in the IRC rooms, until the only acceptable input device for a Doom game on any platform anywhere is the Microsoft Kinect. And then and only then can we turn to our children and grandchildren and say, "You're welcome." edit: 3DGE and Doomsday have splash loading screens, off the top of my head. You could probably count some others depending how loose your definition of splash screen is. Hell I think Doom95 has its own little splash screen. Not to mention every Doom console port. -

Is anybody working on a Blood source port?
SuperflyJohnson replied to hardcore_gamer's topic in Everything Else
I really wish the IP was up for sale so a party that actually gives a shit could do something, anything, with it. At least we have Dosbox. -
I checked the latest dev build from November 10 and it's working on XPSP3, albeit with some issues (black screen on resolution change, restarting fixed it).

Why did aureal die and get bought by creative?
SuperflyJohnson replied to Holering's topic in Everything Else
My understanding was that Creative bought out Aureal so they could kill A3D, which allegedly mopped the floor with EAX. This is secondhand hearsay of course; I actually have a couple of Aureal Vortex cards but damn if I have the time or money to put together a Win9x box right now to actually use them (there are no full-featured drivers for XP).
