Hmm, the best game ever... perhaps. Considering the date which it was released, the effort that went into it.
These days I prefer a good game of UT, (UT2003 as soon as I get my lazy arse to the store to get it), Return to Castle Wolfenstien, Half-Life (And its many many mods, (Decay is a Counter-Strike junkie)) Quake1,2,Arena, just to name a few for multiplayer. For single player corpse making, I prefer American McGee's Alice (I have the original box with her holding the bloody knife, not stupid Ice Wand, and its by one of the creators of the original Doom, GREAT game atmosphere), Rune, Max Payne (Loved the matrix stealing bullet time), SoF, SoF2, Redline (Liked idea of a car driving/first person shooter combo).
When it comes to Doom, however, I have a special place for it, as it was the first shooting game I got enthralled in. (I played Wolfenstien3D, but only a little, hated the sound on my old 486 SX's computer buzzer. Yuppers, my sound was a buzzer. JOY! Doom was used when I got the DX WITH real sound) PSX Doom revived it for me years later... the music in that game... Oh it was the best for atmosphere in ANY shooter I had Ever played to that date.
Now I am finding that I play Doom again since broadband is not available to me where I moved, so Doom is great for delivering pain to other RL people. There is nothing worse than playing CS and all of a sudden your opponent begins to "Warp" all around you and next thing you know your dead. Also the damn St st st st stutteri stuttering, and the fact that, like the matrix, you can unload a whole clip at someone and just hit air... *Kicks his soapbox aside* Anyhow, whatever, just my $.02... er, more like $29.99.
