    [RC5] EVITERNITY II - RC5 Released!

Yassss! What a surprise, can’t wait to play this!
  2. Wow nice timing! Just did a search for Sekaiju tutorials and see that this was posted < 24 hours ago. I have a little bit of experience with the software but want to learn more, so thanks for posting!

What is the hardest map you've ever completed?

Same as several others here, Scythe map30. Finally beat it less than a week ago (uv max pistol start but with a few saves)

    Milestone

I just beat Scythe map30. Feel free to ignore this post, but I’m pumped and wanted to share! I feel like this is a pretty big stepping stone for a lower level player like myself, and builds some confidence to try harder wads. I played through Scythe last year on UV, but took the cheap way out on map30 by hopping the red and blue gates while yellow was lowering. I intended to keep working on it but didn’t come back to it for quite a while. This time I got the UV max with pistol start! (I did use saves, but only sparingly between large fights) I’m thinking of picking Alien Vendetta back up next. I’ve beaten the first 10 maps but I know difficulty picks WAY up towards the end. What was your first big milestone as a doomer? Battambang.zip

    What are you playing now?

Just made it to the third episode of Ancient Aliens this afternoon. I’m coming back after a 7 month break. Also playing around some with Scythe 2.

    Scythe *Sigh* Syke!

I think Bigmacdavis has a video that I watched for map28. Scythe was one of the first pwads I played through after the original games (and certainly the hardest at that point) and really enjoyed having a different goal for that map. Took me 6-8 tries but I loved it. I also enjoyed the challenge of map30, but I, like Shepardus above, cheated by hopping the gate to the end as the yellow gate was lowering. I want to go back and 100% it.

Fair way to play Doom on modern source ports?

I'd say my thinking is relatively similar to yours, SirJuicyLemon. I play mostly in GZDoom, with mouselooking enabled (also use a small crosshair, which is another advantage), but never enable jumping or crouching, at least not on the wads I've played so far.

How and/or when did you become a fan of Doom?

I remember playing the shareware version of Doom when it released while I was in 6th grade. My friend and I were a little taken aback by the violence/imagery and went back to playing more Castle of the Winds. But by a month or two later we were both huge fans of Doom. Never played ep2-3 back then, but played through Doom II in its entirety many times when it released. I remember hearing about custom wads back then, but never actually played any until last month when I rediscovered the glory of Doom.

    [FINAL RELEASE] Eviternity

Really excited to play through these maps. I’ve only played the first couple so far, as I’m trying to wait for RC2 to really dig in. I believe I heard it was almost ready for release. Is there any ETA currently?

Good to be back after 23 years

Oops. Stopped by walmart last night to pick up a couple things on my way home and saw Doom 2016 on the rack for $16 for PS4. Couldn’t resist. Only spent about 30 min on it so far, but seems like it will be fun to play through when I want a break from that sweet old school action.

Thanks again everyone for the warm welcome and recommendations. Busy weekend, so not a whole lot of Doom happening, but still working my way through Doom II with a little Heretic on the side. I had forgotten about the awesomeness that is Tricks and Traps. Also, I've checked out the first couple of levels of several of the suggested wads. TVR!, Perdition's Gate, and Double Impact so far, all of which look good. Of those, I'll probably work through TVR! first, based on what I've read about it and experienced so far. p.s. I also watched some of a Sunder playthrough...wtf haha. Maybe one day.

After a little poking around I went ahead and grabbed Perdition's Gate from Mustaine's site :)

Hi, thanks. And thanks elend and Gaea74 also! Another wad that is on my radar and I would like to try is Doom the way id did. I understand the level design/aesthetics are meant to be similar to the original 3 episodes, but does the difficulty level approximate the OG episodes as well? As for my current skill level, I played ep1-3 on Hurt Me Plenty and while it was comfortable, I wouldn't call it easy. Some of that was probably the controls, though, as keyboard+mouse seems way easier to control now. I don't intend for this to become a wad recommendation thread, but certainly give me a few more examples of interesting mods with a somewhat lower skill requirement if you have any handy. Heretic seems roughly similar in difficulty so far, but still on e1. I think all I played back in the day was the shareware version of this one. Oh, and I'm definitely looking forward to Romero's upcoming e5 wad!
  15. I haven’t played Doom since 1996 (minus a partial play through of Doom II in college at some point) and I am completely blown away by the amount of resources there are available and the support these games still get from the community! Also the fun I’m having playing/replaying these. i purchased the iwad files from Steam and got GZDoom up and running. So far I’ve played through the first three episodes of Ultimate Doom with keyboard only controls (the way I remember from back then) but now I have mouse + wasd set up for my current playthroughs of Heretic and Doom II. I also have Eviternity and NEIS ready to go soon. Needless to say, I’m pretty excited about how much fun I’m having. Anyway, mostly just wanted to introduce myself and see if there are any other recommendations than what I’m currently doing. After Doom II I’ll try out e4 and probably try to get into the Final Doom wads.
