I am 18 years old now. I have a full ride to the 2nd best business school in the U.S., despite wasting many many hours on countless video games (primarily everquest). I've played tons and tons of doom games, and I have to say that if there was a game I would expect super-christian parents to dispute, it would be doom. So many pentagrams and Satanist things are present in Doom, and really I think they toned it down for Doom 3. I played the Nintendo 64 doom when I was about 14, and I actually felt a little creeped out and queasy after all the smiling horned demons with blood coming out of their mouths and upside down crosses for scenery. I had to stop playing it.
I am not a religious person at all..I was baptised catholic..but it didn't really take effect! But this doesn't make me Satanist either..and really, I truly believe there is a large amount of disturbing things in the Doom games, including Doom 3 which I have almost finished.
If I was a parent, I feel I would be fine with my 12 year old son playing counterstrike, I would be fine with them playing Unreal, but Doom is built to be psychologically disturbing. There's spiders for arachnaphobics (me), flying baby monsters, Hell references, pentagrams, and in the most literal sense of the word, Demons. This was explained in the Doom books as well ( I read all four..liked them myself) that the Doom universe was constructed in a way as to be as deeply disturbing as possible to instill as much fear into the marines of the complex. These demons could have taken any form but they took the forms inspired by our concept of Hell.
Even at eighteen years old, when I play doom for four hours, after I am done I glance around my house warily. I go to sleep sometimes having images of the game that are very disturbing preventing me from a good nap. I consider myself a very stable person, but still with that kind of youthful impressionability.
My concern with Doom and younger players is not that they will become homicidal maniacs, I STRONGLY believe video games are not the cause of this. However, I think that the deep Hellish nature of the Doom games is something that makes the game appropriate for only those 15 and older I think, maybe 16. That's my take on it anyway..anyone else feel disturbed after playing it sometimes?
Maybe I am just a wuss..but I think if a kid spent too much time with all these demon images and bleeding wall antichrist atmopshere it would leave them kind of demented...
