    Doom II XBLA Now Released!

I can't wait to find out what the new maps are like. I actually might buy this on XBL since the idea of a new episode after all this time is like seeing Elvis come back to perform a live concert! EDIT: Can you imagine how much money they could have been making all these years? Releasing a new 9-map episode like this every year or every 6 months for something like 200-400 points? Members of Doomworld can produce a fully playable map in 2 hours, now imagine if we could get paid and had a 6-month deadline! They'd be inundated with about 50,000 wads per year!! EDIT 2: Is anyone remotely worried that the new official mapper will suck compared to Doom Community champions, and that the new maps will be 1994 standard in order to fit in with the original Hell On Earth maps?
  2. Ok - I kept the switch room because I really like it and it's something I've always wanted to build, cos I like complexity (although I won't be making another level THIS complex any time soon). What I did was add visual indicators to show which switch does what. So when you hit each switch, bars added to the switch room now raise or lower just like the equivalent sectors elsewhere in the map. I've added coloured strips to all sectors which are affected by the switches in this room. Not only is it now more obvious what does what, the presence of a minor secret is now hinted at, and the map looks prettier as well! More ammo was added at intervals and I replaced a Pain Ellie with up to 3 Lost Souls depending on difficulty. As for the linedefs being too close to one another I've done some renovation, plus instead of catching a lift up to the Manc loft, it now takes you to a teleporter room with a small safe area where you can catch a breather, then assault the Mancs by making pop-out attacks. I could write a book about the making of this wad. However long the original author took, I have probably now spent twice as long revamping it, more than 60 hours!
  3. Yeah the chainsaw was a late addition that I placed in an easy secret, thinking people might enjoy saving some ammo while inflicting ruinous death! I've done only a couple of edits to the final 3rd of the map (the blue area) and I'm having a quick break from mapping for the weekend. Proper burned out after putting about 30 hours into the map this week.

The Self Portrait and Personal Photograph Thread

This is me while I was fighting alongside the human resistance on Geryon. Holding that pose was difficult because I'd just farted and I felt a bit of wet come out.
  5. Hi SuperJamie, thank you very much for the feedback, you came up with things I never even considered like the bars on the Mancubus loft being out of alignment due to the wooden decorations I added to the walls of the main hallway. One major problem I had was over-complication: the map had the beginnings of a good adventure but it was incredibly boring to look at and there were several areas which simply had no function. I re-textured absolutely the entire map from wood3 and wood5 (the wood5 in particular was used to horrible effect) to wood1 which is probably why the whole thing took me so long. I don't recognise the shot with green walls directly attached to wood but I'll find them. I am not entirely sure what unpegging does although I know you need them on doortracks and I found that they can be used for texture alignment purposes in some cases. Maybe some areas of the map were too tall; I left nearly all sector heights untouched to avoid runing the Mancubus lofts. I had a lot of problems with the Mancs on UV and even HMP and I am going to change the way the lift dumps you straight into their arms. I'll make it so you run down a corridor and emerge beside the Mancs so you can duck into and out of the corridor taking pot shots. I used Boom and ZDoom pretty much equally but due to the huge number of hours I put into the map and its high difficulty level I haven't had a complete run-through of my own yet, I wanted a fresh pair of eyes to go through it and look for stuff that was invisible to me. There are quite a few blank walls towards the end of the map and that's where I became physically exhausted with building and re-texturing, but that will be addressed. Finally, the high number of Pain Elementals was due to me wanting to use monsters we don't normally see while avoiding the ones that are in every map, hence the complete lack of shotgunners and only two Revenants in the entire map. I'll add some more ammo to deal with the Pain Ellies. Also there is more than one rocket launcher in the level so depending on when you find them the map may be slightly less draining on ammo. Hopefully Woodhalls 2010 proves that a map can be hard without Revenant or Chaingunner spamming :) Ah well, to work once more!
  6. Maes, this is an anonymous debate on the internet. I have no intention of falling out with you, and this is starting to get personal. I think we have both made our points so we'll have to agree to disagree. To answer your question about military experience, I am partially sighted so I am not eligible for any service. I wanted to enlist with my local regiment which happens to be armoured infantry so I could drive a Challenger 2 MBT or a Saracen APC. I wanted this not to go around killing people, but to defend the people, country and way of life that I love. That's all.
  7. Actually, I see this how I saw the Argentine invasion of the British Falklands. The Argies made a declaration of war and were ruined and humiliated by the British response. On the 11th of September 2001, the Taliban committed an act of war against America. America's allies (or at least some of them) responded. The military of Afghanistan and Iraq basically ceased to be within a few weeks, leaving the tunnel dogs who started the whole conflict hiding in caves beneath their ruined countries. Lesson: do not, ever, declare war against a superior force when you have nothing more to cling to than a twisted moral superiority (underdog syndrome?). I do see the invasion of Iraq as wrong since this should have been resolved in the first Gulf War when there was full and clear cause to destroy Saddam's regime, but the allies pandered to public opinion and left Saddam Hussein to wreak murder on the innocent civilians left behind. I suppose it all comes down to the question: can Western countries be attacked with impunity by countries which do not share their comparatively peaceful ideologies (as in compared to the war-torn middle east where life is worth less than a handful of pennies or cents and women are basically slaves with no human rights), just because said Western countries are many, many times more powerful, better equipped and capable in all-out conflict? Should Western response be non-existent just because their cowardly opponents hide out among women and children? How are the Western countries supposed to defend themselves and their rights? Perhaps during WW2, the British Empire should have left its European allies to annihilation and enslavement because poor, innocent Germans might have got hurt? Millions of civilians on both sides died. The butcher's bill of war, yet another reason why all war is wrong, but think of the cost in life if the Third Reich had conquered the entire of Europe. We wouldn't be having this conversation now; I'd be speaking German and America would most likely have been nuked. If I go up to someone and punch them in the face, telling them they have less right to live than I do, they should have every right to smack me back. If I see my friend being attacked, I will go to his aid, and I will attack the people who are attacking him. Of course, negotiation, brainpower and agreement are the ideal solution to any problem: but how do you negotiate with someone who utterly despises you and feels that you have no right whatsoever to continue to exist, and who believes that he will be rewarded in heaven if he brings death to you and your loved ones?

Fully Functional Pac-Man Comes to Google

I didn't know there was a 2-player mode!! My sister and I are gonna be on this all night.
  9. Right, here is Woodhalls 2010. Original: 67.7kb. Mine: 551kb. Heh. There are 4 problems that I noticed, and they are all mentioned in the text file. They're beyond my ability to fix with my current knowledge so please tell me how to fix them. The worst problem is no music in Boom even though it works properly in ZDoom. This map is simply more enjoyable in ZDoom, although it looks much sharper in Boom. The text in the accompanying text file is all over the place - I don't know how to keep the text in line. That said, the level *should* be doable at all difficulty levels, and should prove interesting to those who like to explore! I look very forward to SuperJamie's assessment :) http://files.drdteam.org/index.php/files/get/w2ipHg4RCA/rawnwood.zip

    I've always wondered... [Post Hell]

    Who's Glassyman?
  11. What I do know is, our way of life is under attack from an utterly determined, completely amoral (to our way of thinking) enemy who would see us drowned in our own blood, an enemy who thinks nothing of blowing himself up to kill a crowd of children if it will kill even a single Western soldier... an enemy who struck first blood. So the mighty forces of America and Britain struck back with typical human ferocity. Quel suprise. Two of the mightiest nations on Earth are not going to let a bunch of "barbarians" commit such scale of atrocity without reprisal. I don't know about you lot but I was sitting in the office with a headset on, trying to explain to an old lady how to use Internet Explorer 5 when a colleague walked in saying "Someone's just flown a plane into a building". I am not sure what the West did to deserve being branded worthy of extinction, but I can tell you now, if sitting in an office talking on the phone over a cup of tea qualifies, Britain as a nation should start hiding under its covers. I find it really, really difficult to see the West as the villain in this piece. The war against terror was declared the moment someone decided to hijack planes and fly them into buildings, killing thousands of people for a cause right-minded people don't understand or give a damn about. The dogs of war were let slip in retaliation. Those dogs of war would still be on the leash if it hadn't been for the 11th September 2001. PS My granddad, to my mum and her sisters during the American/Russian standoff at the height of the Cold War: "Listen, girls, those Russians aren't stupid. They won't start world war 3. They don't want it any more than we do. It'll be your hotheads and bloody nutters in the Middle East. They're the ones we'll need to watch out for."

    I've always wondered... [Post Hell]

It is my fondest wish to be immortalised in Post Hell one day. Maybe I'll post a horrifying poem about Imp sex, or the size of a Hell Baron's testes as they slap into the Doom Marine's chin, bruising his windpipe. But I'm on best behaviour until I have been here a while. PS 3 consecutive hell threads - THE MASTERS BOW TO YOU!
  13. I'm about to submit the "finished" version of my map, which will be my first completed contribution to the world of Doom mapping. What are we going to do about the 6 unfilled map slots? We can't release a 26-map megawad. I volunteer to work on a second map if there is time, though I can't guarantee I would produce something brilliant in less than 2 weeks.
  14. Humanity has not evolved that much in the space of one generation. Soldiers are killers. Terrorists hide out in the midst of civilians. War is a hateful thing, but soldiers who are in a foreign dirtball country surrounded by hidden hostiles who despise everything about them, and whose home media is constantly trying to find fault with them, are very likely to snap now and then. Funny how nobody seems to pay much attention to when our side gets tortured and blown up. People only seem to care when our soldiers do it back.

    Monster teleports not working?

Hi, I'm creating a trap in which several monsters beam into a room surrounding the player. The monsters are in a hidden, inaccessible area connected to the room into which they are supposed to teleport. The monster area is connected to the main room by a tiny hidden channel with 1 pixel of ground clearance (to allow noise to alert the monsters). The monsters are not tagged as deaf. The problem is, although the monsters are activated normally, they do not teleport into their destination sectors. Can anyone tell me why? I have tried using "monsters only" and normal teleport lines and neither seems to work. Each teleport line has its own tag and the sectors containing their teleport destinations have matching tags.

    Monster teleports not working?

Thanks Jodwin, I have implemented that in a couple of windows which look out onto a night sky. Feedback from people while playtesting (the map is nearly finished) will show whether or not the windows work. I have them high up in the walls letting light spill into the rooms, it's a slightly unique approach and I'm not sure if it works as well in practice as it does in my mind. Screenies: HIDDEN GALLERY THE GREAT LIBRARY NOTE: The Great Library area is finished apart from adding a light sector spilling in from the window. It doesn't look as bland as in that shot while you're playing the map. Also, I'm not too sure whether the light effect in the Hidden Gallery works so well.

    Last Doom Wad you played

Heh, good start, bet that filled you with confidence :) Ever since I first played Alien Vendetta, around 2001 IIRC, I don't think I've ever had eyes for anything else. I have played hundreds of wads since but AV is the one I always think of. While Mishri Halek is not my favourite map to play (too long, too complicated), it is a sensational piece of map making, IMO the single most impressive map ever made. For me, AV contains the highest percentage of superior quality maps (in terms of looks, tension and atmosphere) of anything I've ever played.

    doom mus titles

I'd like to say a big thank you for introducing me to the Megadeth song "Hangar 18", what an awesome piece of adrenaline! If the music D_Runnin was inspired by this piece, what went wrong?? lol
  19. I for one would love to see a spiritual successor to the old legends. My gripe about the HR wads has always been that many of their maps look like crap compared to other highly enjoyable projects such as Alien Vendetta and Requiem. I'd love to see a HR3 keeping the spirit alive while introducing modern elements. Id offer to submit something myself but I'm new to mapping and I haven't released anything yet, although I'm very close. If this project continues I would love to get involved. EDIT: That's exactly how I feel about the idea of working on a new Hell Revealed... it's like putting your name to something that is already guaranteed its place in history, and it is something a mapper should not turn down lightly!
  20. I re-uploaded my map: http://files.drdteam.org/index.php/files/get/ADDqw1wvQ5/rawnwood.zip The map is not fully playable yet as I've spent 3 days working like someone who has no life to get certain areas fixed. So a couple of areas are empty, the red key maze hasn't been touched, and the difficulty level on UV is quite high. Ideally I just want feedback about how it's going, any textures I misaligned or need to change, ideas to vary the look of certain areas etc. I was starting to run out of ideas for the second third of the map (through the blue door) so I simply swapped the floor and ceiling textures used throughout the rest of the map, and I think this makes a subtle difference. Monster teleports not working?

Yeah a picture would be handy :) Now I'm struggling with crushers BUT I think I made a stupid mistake so I will play around with it for a while before I ask for help! My 1994 map has had dozens of hours of work put into it, to be honest I think modifying an existing map might be the best way for beginners to start, provided they enjoy a challenge =D
  22. Regarding the updated Undersea, I couldn't find one of the keys. Loved the eyes peering through the walls. First played the original back in the late 90s, what a blast from the past.

    Monster teleports not working?

I don't play in vanilla, I always use a source port for the cool features, although I don't like maps that don't "feel" like Doom, like Hexen and Quake maps or non-Doomish monsters. I do try to bear in mind that other players will use vanilla but some ideas are potentially unworkable without ZDoom, Legacy or Boom. EDIT: Has anyone ever played split-screen Legacy co-op? Always thought that was a brilliant idea and my friends and I have had a lot of fun with it, esp. on the megawads like Hell Revealed and Alien Vendetta.

    Doomworld Jazz Thread

BOLLOCKS, I thought this said "Doomworld JIZZ thread" and eagerly opened it up expecting to see a picture of Joss Stone getting what for. Then all I get is a load of videos with men playing instruments. Still, a wank's a wank.

    I've always wondered... [Post Hell]

Post Hell is my favourite thing on the internet. When I'm bored I like to trawl through it. The "post your controversial opinions here", two porno stories and one random obscene sex poem nearly made me cry laughing. Ever since joined Doomworld I seem to keep missing the threads that get helled, except for the one I got helled by posting a picture of two gay men holding one anothers' bum cheeks. EDIT: Sorry Fredrick, whoever you are. Even if you were a girl I would not find you hot. But then again what do I know.
