Yes, xvertigox's claim is wrong. The stats are available, so there's no need to guess or spread misinformation on this stuff. Also, I don't think that 4000/3000 = 1.5.

Remember that the SSG wouldn't have figured in deciding how much health to give the original Doom monsters, as it didn't exist until Doom 2. But I'm sure there was a good deal of tweaking of the amount of health the monsters had, and the amount of damage the weapons did, so that the game felt right, and the bad guys weren't either a pushover or too much of an annoyance. The BFG, Spider MM and Cyberdemon were probably less extensively tweaked, as they were one-offs in the original 3-episode Doom. Uh, you might want to look up the actual figures.

Who was the first person here to play doom?
Grazza replied to yellowmadness54's topic in Doom General
Though they would probably have played the shareware before they paid for E2 and E3. There are probably some members who downloaded the shareware the day it was released (or at least tried to). moonspell snagged it pretty early, for instance. -
The following wads contain a few tree sprites and grant permission for them to be used: Skyewood Haslam's Book Store of Doom System Vices

With that in mind, I have moved a number of "non-nomination" posts to the discussion thread.

I think there were several, but probably the one you're thinking of was "GARGANTUAN RETARDED" in huge red capital letters. Possibly in marquee style too. I imagine that at some point he had the one that pushed his posts off the right-hand side of the page. And maybe a "Banometer in the RED" and things like that.

Given that it is a head that has somehow become detached from a larger monster, it seems more likely that the "holes" are where the brain stem was attached to the spinal column. To determine gender, you'd need to find the body from which the head became detached.

how much do you exploit quirks and bugs during normal play?
Grazza replied to Face23785's topic in Doom General
I do so whenever I see an opportunity, and even if it isn't clearly useful. The most common thing is straferunning, of course, but I also tend to use the door trick a lot, as it is often a good way to stay healthy and save ammo. If I notice a possibility for some drastic trick-based shortcut, then that's pretty much the end of any 'normal' playing of the map; I find it much more interesting to find out if the trick idea can be made to work. -
He's probably referring to this one.

TNT map 27 Mt Pain seemingly limitless lost souls?
Grazza replied to Face23785's topic in Doom General
That's out by one. They can only produce a lost soul if there are 20 or fewer. That's why 21 is the limit. If there are 20, they can produce 1. If there are 21, they cannot produce any more. -
That information is available to us.

I'm not aware of any clear guidelines on this, but I suggest that it should depend on to what extent it is "your" thread. And, to use a sporting analogy, that would depend on whether it is your ball, or whether it is merely a ball that you have thrown into play, to be kicked around by others. For instance, if you've asked a very specific question that you need answered for your own purposes, and that question has been answered and your problem is solved, then closing the thread is generally speaking perfectly OK. But if you have just raised some general issue that is being discussed actively by other people, then the OP suddenly closing it on a whim (or because they don't like the way the thread is going) would not, I feel, be justified. That should be left to the moderators. If you feel your thread (i.e. one that was "your" thread to start with) has gone seriously off-topic, then you could suggest that a moderator splits the thread. But note that splitting a thread isn't necessarily a simple matter, since the various lines of discussion are often intertwined. Reopening your own thread when it has been closed by a moderator is obviously a no-no.

Would there be interest in a C-N-like for more modern wads?
Grazza replied to Melon's topic in Speed Demo Submissions
Just posting to wish you well with this venture. Since you are proposing to use this forum as the method for people to make entries, then I should state that, as forum moderator, I am completely happy for you to do this. I doubt you'll have much luck contacting Adam. I don't think anyone in the Doom community has heard from him in many years. I'll be in Budapest again next March - I could look in a phone book. :p But anyway, your venture sounds different enough that it isn't really treading on compet-n's toes. If you were proposing to take over the compet-n site or use demos that were intended as compet-n entries, that would be different. Regarding verification, then yes, checking that entries are valid in terms of kills, etc., is pretty simple, though you might want to clarify a few issues that have been to some extent ambiguous in some formulations of the rules. For example, the Max definition with respect to rekilling, and hard-to-reach monsters; the Pacifist rule on accidental indirect kills that potentially might be avoidable; you might want to consider if in Tyson you want to allow, e.g., rocket jumps that don't harm any monsters. You shouldn't feel that you have to follow Compet-n rules, warts and all. I'd suggest specifying that intercepts overflow emulation may/should be turned off. As for cheating, I agree that for this to be a success, you're largely relying on entrants to be honest. I don't think you should let the cheating issue dominate your plans, or resort to elaborate anti-cheating measures that will put people off bothering to record, as well as complicate your task in setting up the site. Blatant TAS use can easily be thrown out, but you might get some vexing entries that look possibly cheated but for which there's no smoking gun in terms of telltale signs in the data. Then you'll have the tough choice between offending a possibly honest recorder, or allowing a demo that may devalue the hard work of other recorders. In those cases, you'd probably want to consult other players, as I believe AdamH did. -
Map19 (Waste Processing) Nomonsters Speed in 1:57 New route featuring two flat-faced glides. I had this route idea some time ago, but couldn't get the first glide to work. In this demo I use what I think is a new approach to north-to-south glides, but I could be wrong. I guess this would be easy enough to do with monsters. st19o157.zip

Yes, it has indeed done a lot, most notably playing a significant role in its decline.

In case it is useful to anyone, I'm posting a little demo showing a simple trick at the start of map14. I spotted this idea years ago, but never had a use for it as a Speed would still be too violent and lengthy for my taste. It should be fairly useful in most demo categories, as it saves a bit of time, and gets some goodies rather early. And it looks cooler than the intended route. :) It also enables you to keep the monsters in the central area penned in. Can't be true for any map in STRAIN, 'cos I love them all. st14trik.zip

FDA attached (as requested). Hesitant and with poor punching - sorry. I was expecting a tougher map, so I didn't play aggressively. tm12-fda.zip

It's nice to see new STRAIN demos. It's a very underdemoed wad, relative to its quality.

Hell no. I don't remember when I last bought a new game.

Compet-n rules are clear: to be valid, it must be recorded with id's original executable, completely unaltered. The lmp file does not contain information of the type you describe (key config, resolution). There are no differences in the data format for complevels 2, 3 and 4 (Doom2, Ultimate Doom and Final Doom).

Reaku comments on Reverie [split]
Grazza replied to Reaku-the-crate's topic in WAD Releases & Development
I've split off the Reaku branch of this thread so that genuine and useful feedback doesn't become lost in amongst the fallout from his posts. And Reaku: stop making inflammatory and insulting posts to other members. Remember that they might know more about Doom and be more experienced with the game than you. -
