I did Nightmare demos for all three maps of Skyewood. I hope the coolness of the maps compensates for the mediocrity of these demos. The routes are OK (I think), but the execution could be tightened up a fair bit. For those who don't know how to watch demos, the zip includes a batch file that you can use to watch them with prboom.

Heh. My deliberately bad wad was REJECTed.
Grazza replied to Dco16's topic in WAD Releases & Development
It's not the first time Ty has rejected a wad for having a crappy name (e.g. "asshole"). He has also rejected uaclabs more than once for being "too controversial". It sounds like your wad was essentially abusing the service the archive provides to the Doom community. -
Doom3 was at least mentioned as a game they played, and this appears to be the motivation for the post to have been made at all.

No spam in the Questions Forum please.

Moved from Classic Doom Multiplayer, since nothing in the post seemed to be about Doom(1) or Doom2.

I wouldn't claim that mine was a completely definitive list of underrated episodes, you know.

What was being proposed here was (amongst other things) something that couldn't be beaten without cheating. That's just bad design. And dumb.

Been looking forward to Doom 3 for a long time, but I feel somewhat dissapointed
Grazza replied to niatsnie's topic in Doom 3
I haven't got it yet, so can't comment as to the overall assessment. However, your disappointment with the game sounds similar to many of the complaints that those of us who have stuck with Doom for ten years have about many of the more recent games. I'll move this to the Spoilers forum, since it does contain comments about the experience of playing the game itself. -
I use pause during playback very frequently, generally without problems. The very few occasions where this has led to a desync (or one happened coincidentally?) was when I paused during an stats screen. Anyway, the fact that your map30 desync happens in both Prboom and Eternity suggests it was something introduced by or before Boom 2.01 (that's where the two ports' genealogy diverges) or something caused by a recent fix shared by the Prboom and Eternity guys. I think I get the same desync with CDoom 2.05 (hard to tell, since I watching with -fastdemo!) but your player didn't leave the start area. That port was based on MBF.

Good question. But I'll be kind and move this, rather than just helling it. This time.

That's not the case. The Doom(1) alphas were released and made available with the approval of id. Look at the text-files here.

Testing the Tapwave Zodiac: people may be playing your levels
Grazza replied to Job's topic in Doom General
Here's a link to the exact post in that thread: omg. And from the place Job linked to: rooflies! -
With the original Doom engine, a demo was a recording of player actions (i.e. key presses, mouse movements), and the randomness in the game was actually wholly determined by a pseudo random number generator (which would always generate the same sequence if the player's action were exactly the same). This meant that recorded demos had very small filesizes (e.g. a 20-minute SP demo might typically be 100K, and zip to 15K). It also means that you can do far more with the demos than if they are just a movie file. Of course, that won't work in Doom3 if the program is constantly getting new random number seeds from various places on your computer. It still be a more compact and powerful demo format it if recorded a series of those together with player actions though. Without knowing the inner workings of the game, one can't say for sure.

The only idea that occurs to me is that you paused in map24. That might be throwing something out. I recall Donatas mentioned something about the gametic number influencing some events. If Doom2.exe is being affected by this, but prboom is ignoring the pause (presumably as its way of making it possible to pause during demo playback without causing desyncs), then that would account for it. Presumably that is testable. If I'm right, it's not something you'd want reversed in Prboom, but you might ask for it to draw a distinction between pauses recorded in a demo, and pause being pressed during playback. This is just speculation, of course. BTW, I tested it with Eternity (schepe's modified 3.31 beta 5), and the same desync on map30 occurred.
-
I presume this is a Doom3 question, so I'll move it from Classic Doom Questions.
-
Ouch. Presumably the game involves "real" randomness, so simply a recording of player actions isn't adequate, and all it can do is basically record a movie. :((
-
Can't argue with that. :)

AMAZON.COM tells us to go download DOOM 3 Warez ?!?
Grazza replied to Zigguratbuilder's topic in Doom 3
I've removed the "warez links" aspects of this thread. -
It looks more like blue, yellow and red to me. Oh gn0! Teh Chad-Andorra alliance is attacking the USSR!

How can you tell it's an American plane? From the fact that it hits its target? I suppose the dog in Silverwyvern's image is American too? OK...

Some of his stuff isn't in the archive. You can get more here and here.
