Probably 30nm6520 more than any other. I think I had watched some before that, but just to see how a particular map was done (mostly Icarus, Final Doom {incl. the GM pack that Donce mentions} and Eternal), and not viewing demos as an art form in their own right. It was curiosity about whether Winterfeldt's run had been beaten that brought me back to Doom after a period when I'd been playing other games (mostly HL and UT). Of course, I discovered not only that Panter had beaten it, but that Winterfeldt was believed to have cheated. I soon after found the (old) TAS site. Initially, I was most interested in TAS demos, not really realizing how close to perfection some of the compet-n demos (esp. the single-map demos) also were. Perhaps the demo that has influenced my preferences most (as both a watcher and more recently a recorder) is pn22-123 (HR22 NM Pacifist TAS by Cameron Prosser). It still seems like pure witchcraft to me. Nowadays I watch pretty much all demos that are made public, and am slowly working my way through some of the old classics.

Well if you're going to rake that one up, don't forget Why is their no demon poo lying about?. Can't go wrong with The Big Robb.

Bah, I thought this thread was going to be about the great Username (ball shit snakes, etc.). Me? It's what I used in the Gong Appreciation Society at Cambridge. Not as cool as Psi-Om, but my name's not Simon. And it's a bit like Kasparov's nickname.

Porno wad reviews can be quite funny.

Heh, I needed to log in again to see it, presumably since fraggle had omitted the "www" from the address. Anyway, it has some things in common with this thread.

I was surprised that Cyb didn't mention that Kansam's Trial was created by the same guys as The Sky May Be.

Yay! /newstuff flamewar! We live for this stuff! Nice job.

Darkwolf: Sorry, I accidentally edited your post when I intended to quote it. The buttons are right next to each other... (only the second time I've made that mistake in about six months). Feel free to put the first paragraph back in (it was to do with Phoebus, IIRC).

Operation: Lightning demos (and Fragport map29 discussion)
Grazza replied to Donce's topic in Speed Demo Submissions
OK, I have added it to the zip and reuploaded. Dtoplmps.zip now contains all 11 demos. Opulent: UD's referring to a modified (and new) version of Fragport map29. AFAIK, there haven't been any previous versions of this map where a Max demo would have been feasible. [I split the thread to try to separate the discussion of the two wads, but it seems to have become intertwined again.] -
Or abuse tags? There's so much we can teach these guys to help them get back on their feet again. :)

What does a guy have to do to get laid around here?

Next time, try casually mentioning that you were part of the team that made the Hell2Pay demopack. :p -
Heh. With the Doomworlders come the Doomworld in-jokes.

Yes, looking at the Doomworld forums, EE and Blogs could be deleted without anyone really suffering at all, but the Classic Doom forums and the Hosted Sites forums would be a grave loss.

Operation: Lightning demos (and Fragport map29 discussion)
Grazza replied to Donce's topic in Speed Demo Submissions
I can now confirm that the demos all play back OK with the version I have, so it would make sense to upload that. I also notice that the map11 demo is missing from the zip. Regarding the lighting in map09, it was probably aggravated by the fact that I was watching it with timedemo, which increased the frequency by about 45%, and may thus have greatly increased the eye-strain it caused. -

It's not a public FTP server, I'm afraid. If you make sure that Opulent or I have the right version (i.e. any on which all of Donce's demos play back correctly), then, if Opulent is happy, one of us will upload it. -
Operation: Lightning demos (and Fragport map29 discussion)
Grazza replied to Donce's topic in Speed Demo Submissions
I have a version where the wad is dated 10-Feb-2002, and I've watched three demos (01, 02 and 09) with that (BTW, what where you thinking with the lighting in map09??) and they played back OK. As myk says, even very small changes in a map can easily cause demos to desync. Rebuilding the nodes will almost always cause desyncs. I think it is best just to make the old version available somehow. Opulent is generally happy to place old versions of wads in his 3ddownloads area (that's one place where you can still find the old version of Alien Vendetta, for instance). Actually I could do that myself, but I'd rather not upload a 1.7 meg wad file without his prior approval. I'm not sure how Ty would react to a request for a "downgrade" to be added to the archive; you'd need to explain the reason, and ask him nicely, I expect. I would suggest a one-map patch, to be added to the command line (-file fragport.wad fragpt29.wad ...). That's how Team TNT handled Evilution map31, and similarly for Requiem map21 (IIRC). [Heh, you could do it by giving the player a few invulnerabilities, so the archies can be killed using their own splash damage (UV Pacifist Max). :) That would make a speedrun a bit too easy though.] Otherwise it could just be left as a map where there will be no Max demo. -
Operation: Lightning demos (and Fragport map29 discussion)
Grazza replied to Donce's topic in Speed Demo Submissions
OK, I've put the demos here. Four hours? I'll definitely watch them, but I might use timedemo. :) UD: They're Doom2.exe demos. Should probably play back with Prboom or Eternity as well as the original game, though I haven't tested them yet. Surely mentioning it in your sig would only add two words, and no extra lines? And I should probably split this thread... -
Received OK, and links added to your post. (edit: I've watched them now; nice!) I find it a bit hard to believe that your Operation Lightning demos aren't worth watching. Especially where there aren't any pre-existing demos on a wad, I think it is good to make demos public, if for no other reason than so people can see the maps without the hard work of actually playing them. Edit: The Operation: Lightning demos now have their own thread.

And "outlandish conspiracy theory" from "theory backed up by some sort of evidence or reasoned thought".

Oh, and if you have an old version (e.g. the five disks that the original distribution of Doom2 tended to be), you will need to apply a series of patches to bring it up to version 1.9. This is a bit fiddly but not difficult. The patches can be found here - ask if you need any help applying them.
-
Maybe one that has been corrupted in some way. Try re-installing from your original disks/CD.

Dunno, 8 or so I guess. Successful business, work I enjoy (my hobby became my job) and low stress generally.

Really? I would have thought you'd be quite a long way apart, certainly in the early stages. One player uses the route I did in my demos (also here), while the other stays nearer the start and works in the demons+arachnotrons direction.
