<img src=http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg255/scaled.php?server=255&filename=dsc01937fj.jpg&res=crop> Slightly messier than normal because I'd piled books around the monitor in an attempt to stop the new kitten (Milton) getting behind it and amongst all the spaghetti.

Miscellaneous demos (part 2) [please post in part 3 instead]
Grazza replied to myk's topic in Speed Demo Submissions
Doom Fort UV Pacifist in 0:19 Edit: the route is clearly suboptimal. I intended to check that a little more carefully, but a kitten threatening to walk over the keyboard prompted me to get on with recording. dmftp019.zip -
WADS based on real life places?

You can afford these, I think. At $0.01 I bought a bunch of them. Perfectly good enough for Skyping, and so cheap it doesn't matter if you lose them or give them away.

No way I'm clicking that link. It looks dodgy to me.

For more detail on the "-512" problem, see my post here. Unless you were doing something very unusual indeed, it's more likely you were failing to apply the complevel correctly. If you experience this type of stuff again, record a demo and submit a bug report and it will be investigated. Remember that every single DSDA and Compet-n demo has been tested with Prboom+, so any discrepancies in the way floor motion (or other such critical things) is handled would lead to many desyncs. But these aren't to be found.
-
Which one? I see several. :p
-
Uh, yeah. This is rather well known. For example: http://www.doom2.net/~compet-n/index.cgi?action=nostalg&page=e3m6

It may bring you some foul weather, but shouldn't be too damaging: http://classic.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at201209_5day.html#a_topad (this image will change)

How much used space is on your hard drive?
Grazza replied to hellothere231's topic in Everything Else
C: 0.59 TB used (1.35 TB total) J: 1.81 TB used (2.72 TB total) -
I know you struck this out, but I think there was a source port that did this at one point, but I believe that was more in the realm of a complete and utter fuck-up than a deliberate feature. The manual did make it clear what the durations of the power-ups were, so any confusion on this point is pure user-error.

If you want to take photos surreptitiously, then I suggest Spy Glasses, such as these. Still cheaper than an iPad (and there are cheaper versions too). Ideal for use in the Sistine Chapel, etc.
-
You mean this one? Yes, sure; the author was pretty well known at the time. As for the effect, it was used in number of wads in this kind of way. Scott F. Crank used it in a few of his wads, and Alex Mayberry to a lesser degree in map05 of pdgate. And probably others. I guess the pioneering wad in this respect was Unholy Trinity, though it was used in a different way there. BTW, unlike many of the Doom2 conversions on Maximum Doom, Shrine2.wad was actually made by the author of the original wad. He released it 3rd/4th November 1994 at the CompuServe Gamers Forum (those are the date-stamps of the files I have from back then). The file currently in the archive is unaltered apart from the date-stamp.

Segmentation violation in Boom 2.02 and PrBoom 2.02
Grazza replied to GHermann's topic in Source Ports
It emulates it in all 'positive' manners, but will avoid crashes due to limits and bugs, and will avoid certain types of glitches. Read prb+'s stdout.txt, as this may give a hint as to what is causing (pr)boom 2.02 to bomb out. Or it could be that those older exes are simply unstable on your system. -
You can try -complevel 7 - i.e. Boom's "Doom compatibility" mode. This means that Boom specials will work. However, it enforces Doom-like behaviour for certain things that Boom handled differently (such as stair building and floor motion), which means that some maps simply won't work at all. Most Boom maps were tested with full Boom behaviour, after all.
-
It's a Boom 'feature' and doesn't happen in vanilla. Prb+ correctly emulates it in both cases - if it didn't, a lot of demos would desync. Ref. (I think): "Overlapping uses of global variables in p_map.c"
-
To a lot of Doomers, HR means only one thing, and it sure as hell ain't Heretic.
-
Not at all. The plot is KILL NONE. example But yes, the Doom novels are trash and have very little to do with the game beyond the most trivial subtext. And the game itself has no more plot than the typical porn movie does: enough to set the scene without getting in the way of the, uh, action.

Heh, sounds like it should be a demo for this. :p -
odd/unique/surreal/architecturally unconventional maps
Grazza replied to ella guro's topic in WAD Releases & Development
I hadn't mentioned Equinox in my earlier post because I thought it was just too obvious and well-known. But it occurs to me that some newer Doomers might not know about it. -
That's the optimistic version, I suppose.
-
OK, if we're doing mathematical jokes... What do you get if you integrate 1 over cabin?

I don't have one, but is there a setting to make the view-switching less sensitive (rather than disabling it entirely)? One of the software updates to the Kindle Fire made it less "jumpy" in that respect, so presumably some setting in the device can be changed. I have many times been amazed by how people use their iPads - holding them up in crowds or over the edge of moving ships to take pictures. Why not get an actually good camera for a fraction of the price, which actually has a strap attached to it, etc. I guess it's due to the marketing which tells people that they should be able to do everything electronic with this one device (regardless of how poorly it actually does each of those functions).

I edited one in for you. To quote myself from the first post in this thread:
