  1. I used to have fun with this game called Risky Woods...dunno if you guys remember it.

I loved that game. Probably one of the hardest I've completed, which, BTW I don't think can be done without the gold armour.

As for 486 games, I think it's just worth checking out, see what you can get hold of, because everybody's opinions differ.
    Myself, I'd rate:
    C&C - Of course.
Warcraft II - One of my ALL TIME faves.
Gods - VERY hard, and good.
    Doom engine games, of course.
Eye of the Beholder 1 and 2. I dunno if 3 will work.
Risky Woods - quite good for a Ghouls n Ghosts ripoff ;)
And, I don't know, but with a helluva lot of messing around, Diablo (1) *might* work. Which is cool.

  2. WadEd 1.42? Jeez, I thought I was using an old, archaic version with 1.71! Heh.

And, if you're not really looking, and glimpse at this POTD, that logo at the top looks, at a glance, like it says 'Satan'.

OH GNO! THAT EVEIL DOOM GAME IS WARPPING MY MINDDD!!!!!111

  3. That WadEd32 screenshot (fake) was done by myself, and was just a testament to how much I want a new version of WadEd, especially a Windows one.

I knocked up the screen after hearing about Rellik's (Now dead, or frozen - one of the two) WinDEU32-based WadEd update, I knocked this up, to kind of show what I would like to see.

Shame I won't. Ever. But hey...

    BTW;
    I WANT THAT SHIRT!
    I WANT THAT SHIRT!
    I WANT THAT SHIRT!
    I WANT THAT SHIRT!
    I WANT THAT SHIRT!
    I WANT THAT SHIRT!

    Except in black.

  4. Apparently, judging from what I have read in the textfile that comes with BSP, it's not about linedefs, but SEGS/SSECTORS (One of the two). I gather it's something about how areas (Sectors) have to be broken into triangles to be drawn, or something, and it's many of those in view at the same time that causes VPO. Linedefs just cause HOM.

I have no idea, so don't quote me 100%, but BSP can reduce the chance of it happening. Read the docs.

  5. From a technical point of view, then JDoom is completely void, not actually being the original engine. But creatively, given the merits of Doom's and Duke's artwork, Doom's is a lot more abstract by comparison, and therefore hasn't really 'dated' as much as duke's - as is the case with most older games that tried to be realistic.

You'll probably see this a lot when photorealism is actually possible with game graphics, and games like Deus Ex, et al will actually look more dated than say, Serious Sam with it's comic-book styling. The issue of what looks dated and what doesn't is probably more a subjective matter than anything, but it's the same thing when I look at old games of similar nature like, say StreetFighter and Mortal Kombat. We all know the better game of course, and when it was first released, MK did look better, but now it just looks poor, and yet SF's comicbook appeal is still pretty strong, graphically.

All subjective, of course, but isn't that the nature of this post? ;)

Oh yeah, I didn't get to the point, being my answer to the question, which is: Neither, IMO.

Now, compare Duke to ZDoom (Software) for example, and we have a different story...

  6. I think I actually played ORACLE once... is it the one with the screens on the level wall that show you how to get certain items/keys? I thought that was a pretty neat thing to include. Sadly more wads haven't used it.

Yes, that's the one. IMO it was an awesome level, in most respects. And, IMO it's a damn shame the screen thing hasn't been used since much. I was contemplating it for a puzzle in Murderous Intent 2, though.

  7. You don't pronounce the H???? What the motherfucking hell kind of english is that? ;)

No, it's not correct where I'm from, it isn't. And, I should know English in it's correct form, being from England and all.

But, I wrote that, because I can't recall offhand any funny Faxanadu quotes. That was years ago, and my NES no longer works :(

  8. There might be a few worth-playing games in between though.

You have to be kidding me.

I for one, do not like the current direction of recent games. Besides, none of the upcoming ones, outside of Nintendo or Sega releases (Read: GC Mario Kart and Metroid, PS2 Virtua Fighter 4) for the consoles look like anything good.

Which means more money saving behavoirage (?!). Heh, I could be a LPB for Doom3 yet!

  9. Is this really a Warez request? AFAIK EVERYTHING on the Maximum Doom/Master levels CD is (was) available from cdrom.com, anyway.

And they are worth getting, if you have the stomach to churn through thousands of levels for about twenty good ones.

The master levels are all cool, IMO, but the Maximum Doom collection should be just for the insanely curious.

I'm playing through the levels in Alphabetical order, ATM (God bless me) - ORACLE.WAD is worth a look, probably the best one so far, even if it seems that map03 cannot be finished (I'll see about that).

    However, most of them will make you first efforts at WAD editing (If you have tried) look godlike, so be warned. 2 rooms and 2000 cyberdemons? Shyeah right. {Esc, Q, Enter, Y}

  10. Super Hydlide is the Danzig 5 of the RPG world.

It's problem is (beside it sucking) how over-detailed it is. The weights of every item are applied to your characters speed, usage of energy and attacks, so you kit yourself out with the best armour and weapons you can afford, move out of town, slowly, try to attack an enemy, slowly, wear yourself down, and by the time you're heading back to town to recover, your character tires out (After grinding painfully to a halt) and dies.

Even at the highest game speed it plays like a sloth on traquilizers.

    Avoid it. dEADNAIL overhyped it.
