Anyone else in love with the classic aesthetic of the game?

I never said there was nothing dark or serious about the game. But the influence from campy horror is obvious imo. I'd argue that the D&D campaign the id guys were playing at the time, in addition to campy horror and D&D in general were a bigger influence than Alien. It was supposed to be a licensed Alien game at one point, but I see very little of that remaining in the final product. I also don't contest that it was very realistic for its time, that is certainly true. It was mindblowing graphically in '93, but the they also had to work within the restraints of the time, and I think that, combined with the aforementioned aspects, drove the creative direction and art that Adrian went for. The tone of the thrash metal tracks, the end texts, the readme.txt texts, the artwork, the phrases and terms it coined. It just screams campy horror to me. That doesn't mean it can't have its darker moments. People seem to be confusing when I say "campy horror" for straight up comedy. And that's not what it is. Even Evil Dead 2 had very dark and disturbing imagery and ideas in it. "Horror" is in the name, after all. The dark and moody tracks of Doom also contribute to the horror aspect. Say what you will about Classic Doom being serious, dark and moody with only a few gags, but all one has to do is look at Doom 64, which runs on (virtually) the same engine with approximately the same visual fidelity and graphical limitations, and you can instantly tell that there is a vast difference in tone that is not simply a function of aged technology or graphical limitations (to an extent), but due to artistic vision and style differences. That said, don't ask me to define "camp", because its notoriously hard to put in words but extremely easy to identify. I'd say its a combination of ridiculous, over-the-top elements and characters that take the situation so seriously in-universe that the juxtaposition of the two makes for identifiable campiness, whereas the viewer or player is supposed to recognize how silly it can be, but not to the point of it being some sort of slapstick laughfest. Like I said, don't ask me to define it lol.

Just for reference, this is the Thy Flesh Consumed endgame text: THE SPIDER MASTERMIND MUST HAVE SENT FORTH ITS LEGIONS OF HELLSPAWN BEFORE YOUR FINAL CONFRONTATION WITH THAT TERRIBLE BEAST FROM HELL. BUT YOU STEPPED FORWARD AND BROUGHT FORTH ETERNAL DAMNATION AND SUFFERING UPON THE HORDE AS A TRUE HERO WOULD IN THE FACE OF SOMETHING SO EVIL. BESIDES, SOMEONE WAS GONNA PAY FOR WHAT HAPPENED TO DAISY, YOUR PET RABBIT. BUT NOW, YOU SEE SPREAD BEFORE YOU MORE POTENTIAL PAIN AND GIBBITUDE AS A NATION OF DEMONS RUN AMOK IN OUR CITIES. NEXT STOP, HELL ON EARTH!

It was, but again, only in Thy Flesh Consumed, in the endgame text.

True, and in fact the moody and atmospheric songs are my personal favorites. "Dark Halls" and "Sign of Evil" especially. Tbh, those songs do give a completely different vibe. Yep, just a rabbit. It didn't have a name or story significance at that point. But even that ending screen is ludicrous without the rabbit being important. A city on fire with a cute rabbit head impaled on a spike? Plus the name of the song is "Sweet little dead bunny". That seems campy to me. They definitely went back and expanded on the rabbit joke for Ultimate Doom beyond what they had included initially as a visual gag.

Anyone else in love with the classic aesthetic of the game?

Yes, Daisy (as a pet) is from Thy Flesh Consumed. But everything from the thrash metal to the ridiculous sprites to the level names screams campy horror to me. Honestly though, what really sells it in my opinion is the tone found in the original readme.txt. Both "The Story So Far..." and things like the monster descriptions just kind of confirmed for me the tone the id guys were trying to convey.

I must say, however, that despite my praise, there is one thing I seriously dislike: the visual design of the Baron. The Baron of Hell is my favorite Doom monster, I love the pink upper body and green projectiles. I feel if they had just taken the 2016 Baron, given him green flaming swords and maybe even green flames through cracks in his pink skin, I would have loved it.

Anyone else in love with the classic aesthetic of the game?

Exactly. Doom has always been a ridiculous, absurd, colorful, campy and cheesy game. Like Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness in video game form. Like, he has a pet rabbit for fuck sake. This shit was never supposed to be taken seriously and the campy, "Saturday morning cartoon" (as Hugo put it) feel to the story in Eternal - where all the characters in the story take it seriously but we are obviously supposed to be in on the joke - combined with the over-the-top vibrant and colorful palette make for a great tribute to the spirit of Classic Doom.

Elimination of "Hey, Not Too Rough"

I really wish they would have kept "Hey, Not Too Rough." My brother is playing on Xbone, and he's not the best at the fast-paced action that DE requires. He mostly plays more modern military-style shooters, although he has a lot of nostalgia for Doom from our childhood. So he doesn't have the kind of skills that DE demands. He's playing on "Hurt Me Plenty" but is finding it overwhelming. Since we both have history with Doom, he has always seen "I'm Too Young To Die" as "bitch mode" (in his words). So, even though I advised him that he could turn the difficulty down at any time, he refuses to do so. In Classic Doom, he fluctuated between HMP and HNTR, depending on mapset and map, and how he felt that day, but he would never accept the "shame" of ITYTD. I really wish they would have kept HNTR, because he's just getting frustrated with HMP. I have to wonder why they eliminated this difficulty in D16 and DE. Has anyone had this same experience? Either themselves or with friends/relatives?

I am almost certain that there will be an entire Funko Pop line for all the collectibles.

This is one of my favorite things about Eternal. They have totally abandoned drab, dreary grays and browns (thank god) in favor of bright, vibrant colors that look stunning and appropriate to DOS-era games. Doom has, from the beginning, been a colorful game. And they don't just use it for looks, either, color is consciously and very deliberately used in this game to communicate vital information in the heat of battle to aid in split second decision making. I absolutely love it.

    Demon infighting

The pre-fight scripted infighting appears to be harmless for the combatants involved. But I have seen infighting occur organically during big fights (when I've actually had time to notice it in the midst of the absolutely breathless chaos) and I've seen dead things that I definitely did not kill.

    Bethesda or Steam?

I almost wonder if id Software did that "accidentally on purpose" until Bethesda discovered it and patched it out lol. I don't know how much either company controls or knows what goes out in the final release.

My analysis. A mix of feelings.

Yeah, I've never had that burning hatred for first person platforming that so many people seem to have. I don't know why. Ever since the first Half-Life I've just seen it so much and been so accustomed to it that it never felt weird or out of place for me. It's never really given me problems or stood out in any appreciable way.

My personal favorite is the OG Indigo, since that's the color I always want to be in classic deathmatch.

Elimination of "Hey, Not Too Rough"

Exactly. They said they built the game to be an enjoyable challenge for anyone. The best thing is, more practice means better skills, and in time you can dial it up to bring your game to the next level. I played a bit on his Xbone (My PC Collector's Edition is delayed until tomorrow due to weather) and I can definitely tell that HMP is a big step up from D16. Add to that the extra difficulty of playing with a controller and I can see why he's frustrated. Can't wait to rip and tear with keyboard and mouse!

That's the best suggestion he's probably received all day.

This does not feel like a Doom game

This is not Classic Doom. And that is precisely what I didn't want it to be. If I wanted classic doom, I'd play classic doom. It has evolved the formula while staying true to the spirit. D16 and DE play unlike any game I've ever played, they are a new kind of shooter that feels like an extension of twitch/arena shooters. They manage to feel completely new while also feeling comfortingly old. That is what I love about this new id Software and their games.

Does anyone else think this game is going to suck?

I guess the best advice I can give you is to remember to stay as mobile as possible, and do not forget the "Unholy Trinity" of resource mechanics: Glory Kill for health, Chainsaw for ammo, Flame Belch for armor (Although you don't have that yet). And remember the weak points of enemies, especially for the:
