I understood Wraith energy to be blue (see: Sentinel batteries, the Fortress of Doom's initial lighting) and Argent energy to be red; so since both Crucibles have a red blade, both of them use Argent energy.

Now I wonder if there are blue Crucible weapons.

I'm not sure about Wraith energy being blue. In Doom 2016s Argent D'Nur the energy flowing from the Wraiths was red.

  2. What surprised me in Doom Eternal was how insignificant the role of The Crucible was, after it was prophesied in Doom 2016 as the greatest danger for all realms. After all, in Doom Eternal it was only a demonic relic that served as the energy source for the Doom Fortress.

Depending on what role the prophecies had in Doom 2016, The Crucible will either no longer play a role in the next Doom game or it will be the basis for Samuel Hayden's reign.

    Questions

    1. According to Doom 2016s lore The Crucible belongs to the Slayer. According to Doom Eternals lore the Slayer has it's own Crucible which apperantly is not The Crucible, since he retrieves it on Taras Nabad while The Crucible is powering Doom Fortress. Is this a major plot hole or did I get it wrong?
    2. According to Doom 2016s lore The Crucible will crush the divide. In fact, it did not crush the divide between Doom 2016/Eternals Earth and Hell (this divide was crushed before The Crucible was recovered in Necropolis) nor did it crush the divide between Doom Eternals Hell and Heaven. The Slayer entered Urdak through Nekravol, not through the help of the Crucible. The seal between Urdak and Hell was not broken by The Crucible, since it's still powering Doom Fortress. What do the warnings in Doom 2016 refer to?

Alternative interpretation: Maybe the prophecy is not about the actions of The Crucible but about the monster. Maybe the monster refers to the beast, since this term is used for the Doom Slayer in Doom Eternal. According to Doom Eternals lore the Slayer got the Crucible after leaving the god machine on Argent D'Nur. He became the beast the demons fear. He punished man-born (e. g. civil wars on Argent D'Nur and corrupted humans) and demon beings. He crushed the divide between Hell and Argent D'Nur (before retrieving the Crucible), but he also crushed the divide between Hell and Urdak (after retrieving the Crucible). Hell is now corrupted by Maykrs and Argent D'Nurs hell priest. Argent D'Nur and Urdak are now corrupted by hell.

    Some observations

    • Doom Eternal seems to refer to two Crucibles (sources see below):
      • The one of the Slayer ("A Crucible"):
        • Wraith-fire
        • Can only be held by a Sentinel warrior king
        • It can kill titans (as it does during the missions Taras Nabad and Final Sin)
      • The one of Samuel Hayden ("The Crucible" or "The demonic Crucible")
        • Might offer salvation to mankind
        • Last remaining source of Argent energy
        • Source for synthetic, man-made Argent energy
        • Grant the people a second chance at survival
    • Doom 2016 always seems to refer to the one latter one, owned by Samuel Hayden in Doom Eternal
      • "[...] will punish man-born and demon kin alike [...] crush the divide [...] corrupt all realms [...] create the monster [...]" ->
        • Option A: Looks like a plot hole (see question 2).
        • Option B: Fulfilled (see also question 2).
      • "[...] a dark priest consumed by the Crucible. And even the Doom Slayer shall weep in his shadow [...]" -> didn't happen yet, the Slayer did not weep in anyones shadow by now
      • "you can use it to close The Well" -> fulfilled in Doom 2016
      • "retrieve what is yours" -> looks like a plot hole (see question 1)
      • "absorb and contain the energy of The Well for good" -> kind of true, since Hayden uses it in Doom Eternal for synthethic Argent energy

    Next Doom game

Maybe The Crucible will be of greater importance in the next Doom game. Why?

    • Whats still open is the Doom 2016s prophecy of a dark priest consumed by the Crucible. This is one of the most interesting prophecy, because it could indicate that Samuel Hayden is the main antagonist in the next Doom game. What do you think?
    • After The Crucible is used as the power source for Doom Fortress, it's lights become red and not blue anymore. In Doom 2016 and Eternal red has always been used for demonic powers/influence. Red was the color scheme of hell or areas consumed by hell, blue was the color scheme of the not demonized areas of Argent D'Nur.  Samuel Hayden even makes jokes about this ("power source you sought to eradicate from Earth is now what will help you to save it"). Maybe the Slayers Fortress is now corrupted too?

    --------------------------------------------

    Lore summary

    --------------------------------------------

    Doom Eternal (before Doom 2016)

Part IX: "[...] What rose from the holy coffin on that fateful day was not the impure abomination the covenant warned us of; the hero within would come to be known only as the Great Slayer, the time walker, the warrior Khan whose fire-sword would blaze forth a path for the just and cut through the demonic horde with a vengeance that only a God King could summon. He rose unbroken by the Ritual, his eyes burning with Maykr magic. He took the Crucible in his hand, and Wraith-fire leapt forth from the blade, as only it will when held by a true Sentinel warrior king. [...]"

Arsenal/Crucible: "A sacred relic of the Sentinel People, the Crucible remains one of the most mysterious artifacts known to man. Texts from Argent D'Nur reference the weapon in a revered, righteous manner; while Night Sentinels were known to employ similar energy-based blades in their armaments, the Crucible remains the only one powerful enough to reportedly slay titan-class demons.

Only the Slayer holds knowledge of this venerated sword, for only he has been known to wild it. The blade burns with ethereal heat, immediately cauterizing flesh as it slices through."

    Doom 2016

Kadingir Sanctum: "The power held within the Crucible will punish man-born and demon kin alike. It will crush the divide. It will corrupt all realms. It will create the monster. It must never be found."

Kadingir Sanctum: "Yet even as the Doom Slayer revels in the spoils of his war, another shall rise from the fires: a dark priest consumed by the Crucible. And even the Doom Slayer shall weep in his shadow."

Titan's Realm: "In the libraries of the Lazarus Labs, you learned of an artifact that can sever the connection between our two worlds known as The Crucible. If you can retrieve the Crucible, you can use it to close The Well and shut down the Argent Tower permanently from inside Hell."

Necropolis: "You fought your way through Hell and found the Titan's Core - a portal that gets you one step closer to the Crucible and defeating the forces of Hell for good. You must crush the Crucible guardians and retrieve what is yours."

Argent D'Nur: "By destroying VEGA, you've created a portal directly into the heart of Hell. Now you must find your way to the source of the UAC's power known as The Well. The Crucible will allow you to absorb and contain the energy of The Well for good."

    Doom Eternal

The Return of Dr. Samuel Hayden - Part I: "The destruction of the Argent wellspring on Mars meant chaos for planet Earth. Following the loss of communication between Earth and Mars-based facilities, the collapse of the Argent-dependent energy grid consumed the planet in crisis. It was during this time that UAC director Dr. Samuel Hayden suddenly resurfaced on Earth before the AN Council, wielding that which might offer salvation to mankind - the Crucible

After recounting the events that had transpired on the red planet, Hayden agreed to cooperate with the AN, providing access to the various UAC facilities on Earth and by extension the full range of technologies at his disposal. Paramount among these was the Crucible, the last remaining source of Argent energy in existence."

The Return of Dr. Samuel Hayden - Part II: "Believing it possible to solve the energy crisis which now devastated the planet, Dr. Hayden sought to invent a method of Argent-Synthesis, a synthetic replication that could recreate the high-yield capability of Argent energy. With the destruction of the Argent energy across the solar system, all that remained of Argent existed now within the Crucible, the fabled Hell artifact which Dr. Hayden had acquired on Mars. Knowing full well the Crucible's hidden power, Samuel devised a method to utilize the artifact as an Argent conductor, a process that would in time produce the miracle of synthetic, man-made Argent energy, restoring the production of Argent energy to Earth.

Hayden became a mythical figure among Earth's survivors - in no small part due to his abnormal physical condition. Having returned to Earth when most sought a means to escape, bringing with him the Crucible that would grant the people a second chance at survival - for the common person he had become the stuff of legends."

Samuel hayden after The Crucible is used as power source for the Doom Fortress: "She didn't know you had the demonic Crucible" "In the end, the very power source you sought to eradicate from Earth is now what will help you to save it"

  3. I don't think id Software will redo Doom 64. Why?

Doom 1, Doom 2 and Doom 64 are already part of Doom Eternals story. Doom 2016 and  Eternal take place in an alternate universe in which Doom 1 + 2 + 64 did not happen, but due to the Doomguy showing up in Argent D Nur the Maykrs learn there us another pocket dimension which serves as a hub to even more universes: Hell. Doomguy was the link between both universes. That's why the priest said it was the Slayer who brought Khan Maykr to Earth.

Why does Doom Eternal even need a sequel? Hell has been beaten on Earth 1 (classic Doom) and 2 (new Doom), in contrast to Earth Urdak could not stand against Hell and has been consumed and destroyed. So we're left with 2 cleaned Earths and 1 pocket dimension hub (Hell).

Hells Dark Lord still exists but has been beaten on 2 Earths. The big question is, what will Samur/Samuel do? Is he looking for power (fallen angel) or was he against evil (thus acting as the father's true follower)?

    Multiverse theory.

    Earth-1:

    The Ultimate Doom

    Sigil

    Doom II: Hell on Earth

    The Master Levels

    No Rest for the Living

    Final Doom

    Doom 64

    The Lost Levels

Doomguy stays in hell until the events of Doom (2016), which is Earth-2:

    Doom (2016)

    Doom VFR

    Doom Eternal

I'm wondering why the multiverse theory doesn't get more attention... it answers many important questions:

    Earth storyline, multiverse A:

    - Doom 1+2+64 all happened

    - Doomguy stays in Hell

    Sentinel storyline, multiverse B:

    - Sentinels home world gets peace by the work of the Knight Sentinels

    - Sentinels travel the universe and meet the Maykrs

    - Maykrs and Sentinels team up and conquer other worlds

    - For some unknown reason the Doomguy from multiverse A enters multiverse B near Sentinel Prime (I expect this to be explained in one of the DLCs)

    - Doomguy tells them about a yet unknown dimension called hell

    - Maykrs and Sentinels try to conquer hell as well

    - Argents people get corrupted, priests team up with Khan Maykr

    - Khan Maykr uses hell energy to feed her own world

    - Khan Maykrs makes a deal with hells Dark Lord: She will gift him worlds to consume and he allows her to process Argent energy in hell

    - Samur Maykr doesn't like the development, he steals the Father intelligence and gifts the Slayer godlike powers

    - Civil war in the Sentinels home world

    - Doomguy and the other Sentinels get trapped in hell due to the Betrayer but due to the gift of Samur hell cannot kill Doomguy, they just trap him

    Earth storyline, multiverse B:

    - Samur Maykrs either is born as Samuel Hayden or replaces him during the body transformation, maybe they even merged in consensus

    - UAC discovers Argent breach on Mars, for some unknown reason (maybe a leftover from City of Hebeth)

    - Samur installs the fathers intelligence as a new entity called Vega to aid him during his research

    - UAC discovers Hell

    - UAC discovers trapped Doomguy in hell

    - Doom 2016 happens

    - Earth gets attacked by Hell

    - Samuel Haydens plan, to beat the forces of Hell with the help of the Crucible (and a new synthetic Argent energy) fails

    - Doom Eternal happens

What I still don't understand is the role of the Crucible. It's supposed to crush the divide and corrupt all realms, but the realms have already been corrupted when the connection between Hell and Urdak has been established by the Khan Maykr?

    And why was Urdak dying?

No, I have always used A, Z, LCtrl and LAlt and S for Jump and X for Crouch (not in DE, obviously). I've used these keys for as long as M+K has been around. And I'm never switching to WASD, I'd be 100x worse than I am now.

Thats almost insane! According to your previous post I assume you're using the mouse with your right hand and arrow keys with your left hand. So you have to move your left hand ~ 25 cm (on my keyboard) to access A, Z and so on?!?

I have three suggestions for you, depending on whether you're willing to switch to WASD or not.

    a) Switch to WASD. Q -> wheapon wheel, E -> flame belch, F -> glory kill, C -> chainsaw, V -> crucible, Space -> jump, L Alt -> Switch weapon mode, L Ctrl -> Mission objectives, L Shift -> Dash. The longest distance you're fingers have to pass is about 2 cm (V). Your thumb will always be next to Alt and Space.

Switching to WASD is not hard since the layout is almost the same as arrow keys (except W is a little more left than the arrow key for up).

You will benefit in any first person shooter if you switch to WASD: Almost every shooter has a use key (e. g. E), crouch (C), run (Shift), jump (Space).

You're 47 now. You will live for another ~ 33 years. Assuming you started your first person career with Wolf 3D (1992) you're playing shooters for 28 years now, so you're still in the first half of you're ego shooter life, so it's still useful to learn a much better key binding :-)

    b) Stick with up/down/left/back. You should try using the mouse for your most important actions, to spare some time.

b1) (thats what I use combined with WASD) Mouse 1 -> fire, mouse 2 -> secondary fire, mouse 3 (wheel) -> grenade, mouse 4 -> switch grenade type, mouse 5 -> SSG, wheel up -> shotgun, wheel down -> Heavy cannon.

b2) Mouse 1 -> fire, mouse 2 -> secondary fire, mouse 3 (wheel) -> wheapon wheel, mouse 4 -> switch grenade type, mouse 5 -> grenade, wheel up -> Ballista, wheel down -> SSG.

Each of the three options (a, b1, b2) will make your life much easier. A is the one you will benefit most.

Of course you should learn this new binding by replaying some of the early missions first.

I just tried to follow it, the Marauder followed me up to the upstairs area. Got pwned for the 110th time. In fact, ALL the monsters followed me up, even the damn dog.

I'm also not the youngest anymore ;-) Of course switching upper/lower level doesn't give you safety. It just gives you time to look for your next victim and choose the right weapon. You won't be able to take a rest but you will get a few seconds before the next attack. Go upstairs, choose your victim, kill it, jump upstairs again. And always focus on Cacos, Whipslashes and so on.

Use the ice grenade to slow the most dangerous enemies down. Quickly switch to exploding grenades and throw 2 of them at the frozen enemy.

Don't just chainsaw lower tier enemies. Set them on fire and then chainsaw/glory kill them, depending whether you need health or ammo.

Don't rush through the game. You have to train your skills. Whenever I lost more lifes than I gathered I replayed the level until I improved. Doom Eternal is not a game you can rush.

Tried it once again just now, AND I AM LOSING MY TEMPER.

Have you read my advices (1 post above yours)? Always move between the upper floor of the hall and the upstairs area, the Marauder won't be able to attack you. After killing the most dangerous enemies wait for him and shoot with Balista or SSG once he rises his shield. Then dash again to higher ground.

Regarding the rest of the game: I'm in mission 11 and only remember one other hard encounter: in mission 10 you meet him together with a Whipslash in a small hallway. Since both fire energy blasts, it's not easy to handle them.

Edit: if I remember correctly there was also a secret encounter with 2 Marauders. Dunno when that happened.

    I GIVE UP!!

I'm frustrated as hell now as I type this, and it's all because of the Marauder AGAIN! My latest checkpoint is the battle that starts at the Titan after I pull out the sword thingy, and a whole bunch of monsters spawn... and a damn Marauder.

Beating Marauder, a guide for beginners (like me):

    1. Know your environment. The area you're describing is very useful and helps you: Stairs, 2 jump pads, 1 open area, 1 hall with two floors. Always move between upstairs and hall. As long as you're in the air, he can't harm you.

    2. Kill Whipslashes (ice bomb), Cacodemons (grenade in mouth) and Pain Elementals before attacking the Marauder, because they block your movement. Of course immediately kill his dog too.

    3. Take the Balista, wait until he raises his shield, shoot him.

    Repeat. That's it.

  9. I skipped the cutscene to exit the game and wanted to continue later. Now whenever I select "Continue game" or "Reset mission" the mission starts after the cutscene. I can watch it on Youtube but thats not the same :(

Any idea how to watch/replay it?

I guess replaying Mars Core won't help, since replaying missions usually end with the mission select screen again.

  10. Considering id Softwares last Quake game was released in the 90s, I think it's likely they'll work on a new game in the Quake franchise. Because Quake 2 already had its successor I guess they will continue or reboot the original Quake. This would also match id Softwares current fast gameplay approach.

On the other side the new Doom franchise is selling really good. Thus I expect them to work on Doom 3, as long as their creative minds don't have a perfect idea for a new Quake game or a totally IP.

  11. I usually try to avoid new platforms but the price difference of the Deluxe Edition is about 30 €. Many Bethesda Launcher users complain about issues,  so I'm not sure whether I should wait for a Steam price drop or buy a cheap Bethesda key. What's your experience?

  12. 38 minutes ago, Phobos Anomaly said:

What he's saying is that it is a Crucible, it's just not the same Crucible that Samuel Hayden took at the end of DOOM 2016.

Thanks for the explanation! For me "Crucible" always referred to the sword from Doom 2016, which seems to be something special for the Doom Slayer (Samuel introduced it with the words "it bears your mark"). So my initial question should be altered to "A crucible or the crucible?".

  13. Just now, Phobos Anomaly said:

Trust me, it's the Crucible. I've seen the Unmayker in use.

Maybe I was wrong with the name but according to Hugo Martin Doom Eternal has a energy sword which is not the Crucible from Doom 2016:

But maybe it is - I was just curious whether the video actually shows the Crucible or the unnamed energy sword from the Quakecon reveal?

  14. 23 minutes ago, Hydroact said:

    "Epic crucible sword gameplay"

Hmmm. I wonder what this could be referring to...

    1. The video was not uploaded by Bethesda.

    2. During the Quakecon reveal someone from id Software said the energy sword shown in the trailer is not the Crucible.
