    HL2 aligned itself with ATI

    lol
  2. According to a few articles floating around on the internet (look up "ATI outperforms NVidia on Doom3" for example), some sources (Gearbox Software forums for one have a link to an article "stating" this) have said that in a recent press conference Carmack held, the ATI Radeon 9800 XT with new Catalyst drivers and full-precision enabled have "outperformed" the NVidia GeForce FX 5950 for Doom3, and purportedly, John Carmack said that "NVidia's cards are no longer top choice" for the new Doom game. Somehow I doubt it, seeing as the GeForce series of cards have ALWAYS (supposedly) had the best support for OpenGL versus the ATI Cards. I am predisposed to agree with them that they are, seeing as Quake3 ran at a solid 70 FPS even on an old GeForce 2 MX card. But to each their own. Evidently this "news" happened recently, less than 2 days ago or so. Time to start the rumor mill up again, no time to let the conveyors on the assembly line stop rollin'.

    Old Gems

Look for a program called "Mo'Slo" (moslo.exe, moslo.com, etc...). It can most likely be found under the CNET downloads section for PC games, or any older abandonware sites with game utilities. It will allow you to set a margin on CPU operating speed for your game, such as reducing CPU speed to 25%, 50%, 75% all the way to 100% (dumb). I believe an old issue of PC Gamer that included Ultima 4 and Betrayal at Krondor (a kickass games, FREEWARE, both were full versions) had Mo'Slo with the Ultima 4 package. Good luck.

    annoying alarm clock?

Ditto. Well, that and my alarm clock wakes me up at 5 AM. After that, I usually (sometimes not) fall out of bed, staggering and stumbling to the alarm clock on top of my TV at the other end of the room. After tripping over shit and falling down for 30 seconds, I reach the alarm clock, successfully waking up my mother, which puts HER in a bad mood, so therefore she is evil when she wakes me up an hour later. Thusly, my mother pulls my ass out of bed all the while screaming "ANDY GET YOUR ASS UP AND TURN THAT ALARM CLOCK OFF IF YOU DON'T USE IT!" ...Problem solved.

    Need good RAID HD setup

The new motherboard I installed supports SATA100/133 RAID configurations, but I'm having trouble trying to think of something I'd want to get for a RAID configuration in the future. At the moment I plan on getting two HDs anyways, and since this is SATA and not a SCSI RAID setup, can anyone recommend a good setup? I'd probably have it in there for redundancy (Sephiroth isn't the only one unlucky with hardware it seems) if I ever plan on setting up a webserver or a powerful development machine (which is what it is being geared towards in the first place). I'm sure a few of you are familiar with this stuff. Any ideas?

    i think they are done

Saying "I think they are done" is redundant in a few ways: 1). They're working on voice acting (or were, they could be done now too, for all I know). 2). They have to at LEAST script voice events if they weren't already. Now I do not know how the engine handles exceptions when it comes to missing audio files for scripted sequences pertaining to speech. In Quake, and its engine-spawned derivatives of itself (Quake 2, Half-Life, Quake 3, MOH, CoD), it would simply pop an error up saying "such and such file could not be located." In Max Payne 2 (which I scripted and mapped for for a while), doing such a thing would cause the engine to crash and boot you to Windows. Now, I know from analyzing the Alpha (when I had it, at the time that it was "cool") that there were many discrepencies in missing files or things that should've been in the tech demo. Errors would simply pop up at the top of the screen. However, at the time, Doom 3 seemed to be running off of a derivate of the Quake 3 engine hull, and errors were reported and handled similarly. Due to the complexity of Doom 3, I would surmise that it will handle issues with more ease in regard to the modder/editor. The reason I say it seemed to be on the Quake 3 engine hull is not because it used Quake 3 weapon models (I am venturing a guess those were used as placeholders to prevent errors), but the console worked similarly, and a lot of files were addressed and linked in the same manner (and the same files) when viewed with a dependency walker. Now, with the last (unofficial) "preview" of the game, I am assuming that it has migrated completely independent of Quake 3 engine libraries and is using new files and libraries per the standards of optimization they try to adhere to. In essence (whew) I am simply saying that it is unwise to start crapping your pants, getting rock-hard erections or freaking out just because they said "close to done." I think one or two months sounds feasible, too. However, we know nothing about a release date, and they're obviously not done today. We can wait another month or two for one of the best games of 2004, can't we? :) (Not to mention, my new super-rig isn't finished yet!!!)

Will Doom3 suck because it's an id game!?

Oh come on, the egocentric, moronic, "i-no-evertihng1!!" type trolls are highly amusing, especially when they can not face the fact that everyone has proven them wrong... Kind of like a geek who continues dancing at a formal after the music has stopped playing. They're having fun, but they're oblivious to the fact that they look like complete morons. Oh, fuck, wait... I'm a geek too. Well, I didn't do the dancing with dead music thing yet, but I've done plenty worse.

    Doom3 on DVD?

Actually, I believe that German games magazine article stated Doom3 would be at least 4 CDs long. I do not recall any time Todd Hollenshead or John Carmack stated "Doom 3 will ship on 4 CDs." But that doesn't mean it wasn't said, as I only have internet access at school. Care to point me to a [reliable] source stating the above?

DOOM 3 is "really close" says Carmack

The cool thing about Doom3's engine is how incredibly painless (based on my observation) the editing will be. In the last 10 years of my life, I've moved back and forth editing for games and never being able to make something I was truly proud of, because my goals were too far out of reach for the game engines at the time. Now, I think these things are completely possible. A person can really just about build ANYTHING with the Doom 3 engine, and the nicer thing about this engine is the lack of a need for precompiling a level for playing (usually a lot of it depends on lightmaps). What I like about Doom3 is that it is all dynamic as far as lighting goes. The only thing really needed to compile is geometry.

DOOM 3 is "really close" says Carmack

Ummm, I was aware of the Softimage XSI exporter for HL2, but they also indicated that it wasn't an SDK. Please, for pity's sake make sure you know the subject matter of what you're talking about when it pertains to other forumgoers; it really wasn't fair or necessary to jump all over AndrewB because he voiced his opinion about Id, and I frankly agree with him when it pertains to certain aspects. Now, I'm not trying to grill ya, I just am trying to help you, since I've been here for quite some time (And when I made a blunder the same way you did, I lost my precious Asswarts username).

DOOM 3 is "really close" says Carmack

Let's hope so, although remember that game companies can be notorious for saying "pretty close" and then waiting another year... Oh no, that's Valve, sorry. I was actually waiting for HL2 to come out on 9/30, and now it has been 7, almost 8 months? About 2 months ago someone from Valve (Lombardi?) said that there would be a Half-Life2 SDK "in the next few weeks." It has been more than "a few weeks." He probably meant in the next 30 - 52 weeks. Anyways, I trust id software to get their title out "soon" as they have always been (for the most part) punctual with their releases. Thank god I pre-ordered! Although, April 15 is still pretty iffy. It would have to go gold within the next 10 days!

The Secret Levels In Doom 3

We don't need no stinking badgers! Let vehicles stay where they belong - Unreal Tournament 2004, Grand Theft Auto, and Half-Life 2. However, seeing the vehicles in a modification for Doom3 as a story parallel to the storyline would be sexy. In any case, I think yes, vehicles would be cool, but really are not necessary. And, not to mention, the game takes place on Mars where the environment is more enclosed (minus a few large outdoors areas).

Id needs to follow trends? lol I'd say more than half the trends around as far as FPS' (and many other 3D games) wouldn't exist were it not for Id software!

less-than-lethal ammo could help lower crime

Fuck rubber slugs! Some security guards employed around here use 12 gauge shotguns that have a payload full of rock salt (usually weighing in at a few grams per chunk). THAT fucking hurts, because it usually draws blood and exposes it to salt.

    Bare Breasts

Far be it from my judgement or my position to criticize anyone on their standing toward this issue, but what the hell is going on here? Scabbed and Danarchy, what the fuck, you guys? You're both here at Doomworld. It's a Doom fan site. You (to the best of my knowledge) were at least courteous to each other before, and now you're arguing and namecalling over the issue of exposed titties in public places. ...What a stupid fucking thing to argue over. Neither of you are right or wrong, nor is one superior or inferior to the other. Can you guys please get along and stay on-topic? The Secret Levels In Doom 3

Well what I meant was that it would be (admittedly) humorous if the intermission camera caught a glimpse of the Doomguy nonchalantly walking into a dark corridor from bird's-eye view while being unrelentlessly pursued by a pinky demon, hence the "Quake-ish" comment... Although I didn't really see much of THAT stuff (maybe in user-made maps), it would just seem unnecessary. A cut-scene at the end of every map would be cool, though. I agree with DSM, though, on the stats being displayed after completing the game; that'd be cool.

The Secret Levels In Doom 3

(Got too lazy to hit the back button) The idea of a "pseudo-intermission" screen while showing the Doomguy progressing to the next level does seem rather Quake-ish. Don't you agree? I'm not saying that it's a bad idea inherently, but if you're talking a fixed camera on a pivotal axis going 180 degrees hanging from a piece of sky geometry, well, I think that would be kind of shabby. I think it would be cooler, instead, to have the stats saved to his PDA, and as he nears an exit, the stats pop up ala RtCW. Also, not to mention the fact that it would be rather dull if it was a type of "hubbed" gameplay (being able to go back and forth between levels) where that same camera view would be triggered every time he nears an exit. However, I agree that the Metroid Prime sequence of returning to previous levels to get something you activated on another level and then to the beginning and back is also pretty monotonous... UNLESS there is something really big about to happen, like in the first big "hub" level of Hexen (Map02, forgot the name) where the player has to go through multiple subsections of the level and back to open that big exit door with all the monsters... Something like that, on a much GRANDER scale would, in my opinion, be worth my time. Damn... It makes me want to try that shit out when Doom3 comes out.

I'M THO THTUPID!!!!1111oneoneone *cries* Ah well... Just more bang for our buck either way, huh Arioch? But then again, I never settle for second best, or even 1.00000000009 best. Not to say your system isn't good, but I just went nuts and decided to buy the highest quality parts and components I could. Although, I'd prefer the GeForce FX 5950 over the 9800 CUZ I DEE SED SO AND TAH TIS TEH BOTAM LIEN KTHX [/annoying fanboy] Although, hey, JC did say the Nvidia cards provide better performance and quality than the ATI cards for Doom3, and he did test them both out, as I recall an article he put up (in his .plan I think?) about how they performed on Doom3. [EDIT]: Just having a faster clock speed won't always give the best performance though, the Frontside Bus speed on the MB always helps when it is over 266, especially if you do wacky shit on it like I do. In either case, meh... We'll both just have nice rigs to play Doom3 on! [[EDIT] [EDIT]]: Also, setting your external data bus speed on your motherboard when the CPU can't handle it will just cause more problems for you and potential heating problems if it's not rated for that... Not to mention it voids your warranty as well (at least most times). The FSB jumpers on the A7N8X-E Deluxe is set at a factory default of 400 mhz, which will scale down to a minimum of 200.
