Can't Read Some Topic Titles Because Every Word Is Capitalized
Memfis posted a topic in Everything Else
I fail to read some of the topic titles on this forum. For some reason the authors capitalize every word in them, which makes it too difficult to read anything. My eyes, like, get stuck on every word. So please stop that. -
Activate or pick something up -> get ambushed. It got a wee bit predictable.

The DWmegawad Club plays: Slaughter Until Death & The Evil Unleashed & Obituary
Memfis replied to dobu gabu maru's topic in WAD Discussion
Heh, so I'm secretly a chaingun fan. I guess I'm not too surprised: I really like the comfort of knowing that I can quickly interrupt any monster that suddenly appears. Anyway, e2m3 kicked my ass... Redoing the start only to die in the lava pool with spectres again and again got too frustrating. Not sure if I want to turn off fastmonsters or just quit. -

The funniest style is wh en they hit enter every time they reach the bo rder because they don 't realize it wraps auto matically. -
Why are there so few "cannon fodder" enemies in Doom?
Memfis replied to TootsyBowl's topic in Doom General
Maybe it would cheapen the satisfaction of killing stuff. You know, like in slaughtermaps you're killing large packs of enemies every 5 seconds, at which point it becomes just silly and not cool anymore. Monsters shouldn't drop like flies all the time. -
"Doomers replaying their own maps over and over" - Phenomenon discussion
Memfis replied to Battle_Korbi's topic in Doom General
There is also obsessive testing. Sometimes after 10 replays I'm still afraid that I might have missed something, so I start trying to break things by activating triggers in a weird order, skipping all secrets to test the balance, etc. I think it's kind of bad because of course eventually you will get sick of these maps, and getting sick of your own creations can be rather demotivating. -
Chocolate.exe asking for Iwad textures from pwads
Memfis replied to nicolas monti's topic in Doom Editing
I think the TEXTURE1 lump in your wad doesn't contain all iwad switches, which is not allowed. The problem is that it actually replaces the TEXTURE1 lump from doom2.wad instead of combining them like ZDoom does I guess. -

Does -merge instead of -file work? :o -

e2m2 - demo. Died to some demons once because I don't have enough brain cells, no major problems otherwise. Even in the last room I didn't rush to press the exit switch: the soulsphere gave me enough confidence. I think I like it more than the previous map since there is a bit less symmetry and the texturing is more to my taste. -
Would people be able to tell it is your own map without reading the readme?
Memfis replied to Battle_Korbi's topic in Doom General
In Russian speedmapping contests the authors are hidden until the judging stage is over, yet pretty much every time at least some people manage to identify my level. It always makes me feel a little embarrassed, like "argh, are my works that repetitive?". -
This is also why Doomworld should be made all anonymous. For a week. As an experiment.

I have this stupid problem too. In Windows XP the 3D mode was always smooth, now in Windows 7 it can be choppy if it wants. I think turning on vsync helped a bit but not sure. Also Zoom Player sometimes crashes now while going between windowed and fullscreen, Firefox is unbearable whenever something Flash-related is active, Doom with capped movement feels weird too but not sure if I just forgot how it was. Installing an older Nvidia driver at least made it so programs just crash without crashing the driver itself, which I guess is an improvement. Oh, and then there are all the midi problems. Why did I install Windows 7?

Depending on your ear, modern metal isn't very "heavy"
Memfis replied to Koko Ricky's topic in Everything Else
I find it especially frustrating when even the good stuff does that. Sometimes a movie can be really deep and well-made and yet still have that trashy sort of poster that just screams "look at me!" without doing anything interesting. -

I think Hitherto and Never_Again won't forgive me if I play these without fastmonsters (at least the first two wads). Expect me to drop out soon! e2m1 - demo. I feel like I might have seen Ryback playing this on YouTube before, but pretty much the only thing that seemed familiar was the corridor with these neat pentagram windows. Anyway, this wasn't too bad even with -fast. Sure, that funny Plutonia Map10 style start can easily destroy you while you're stretching your fingers, but the rest is not so dangerous if you exercise some caution. Still, the lack of green armor means that just one serious mistake can result in a quick death. Not sure what to say about the design yet. It's polished but also somewhat lifeless for 1994. Shittier levels from that year often look cooler because they offer so much various crazy stuff to look at, whereas this is mostly just "technically competent" without being terribly creative. I can surely appreciate things like the blue key structure though. I'll need to see more before judging, but I wonder how far I can get playing like this... -
Detail is awesome. Look at Breach, Spanish city maps, or Kama Sutra. Locations in these wads tell stories, they make you interested in exploring and seeing more. But seems like nowadays most people want to create lifeless combat zones where every room resembles the starting one. Or wait, they don't even really make rooms anymore because everything has to be connected to everything and doors are forbidden.

ZDaemon Thursday Night Survival #307 - 2007 WAD Retrospective (revisited)

Nice to play these again! Anima VS 100+ revenants was epic. -
Is it impossible to have longer names in GZDoom Builder? Sounds like a good feature request. I mean, we shouldn't be struggling with the 8 char limit in 2017.

:))) That's a clever way to show the other side of the blanket!

I feel like you don't need complex naming conventions with multiple variables. If I'm looking for a damaged blue door with skulls on it, I'll just go to the door section and then use my eyes to find what I want. So I think usually when naming textures it's enough to put its "main" feature in the name. Color is probably not the best feature to choose since it's so general. What's easier: going to blue textures and finding a door in there, or going to door textures and finding a blue one there? In the latter case you immediately narrow it down to a much smaller selection, which is nice.

I miss it in Doom. It would be interesting to see which monsters get more respect.

I wish trees didn't disappear just because you can't see their center. I think even prboom-plus has this. -

Did you guys notice how more and more programs\websites are getting rid of the "apply" and "cancel" buttons? Now when you're done playing around with the settings you can just close the window. Naturally, I miss that final touch and sometimes I wonder "so did it save my changes or what?". Well, that's probably a question of time and eventually you can get used to such things. But still, do you guys think it's a good idea to remove that stuff? For example, without the "cancel" button you can't quickly take back a bunch of unsaved changes, which can be annoying.
