    dsda-doom source port [v0.24.3]

I'm pretty sure it's related to this: I other words: that's the default soundfont.

DoomWiki Month in Review (Issue #37)

Broken link, the URL must use %3F instead of ? but the forum software automatically replaces %3F in an URL by ?. :( I've decided to just create a redirect from Doom Is Dead.
  3. Those are different in that the "forever" actually has a reason to be there. It's part of the title instead of being a subtitle. Likewise for: and: And by the way: Is it okay if it's the title, instead of the subtitle? I mean... Or my favorite game I never want to actually play.

File Format Idea: PKR (RAR) and PKZS (Zstd)

There's no real point to support fancier compression formats. RAR would be technically possible as IIRC it allows open-source decompression, which is all that we care about for playing; but that means archives couldn't be modified in something like SLADE. (You'd have to do the whole rigmarole of extracting it, modifying the extracted files, and then use WinRAR to recompress it as an archive.) There's absolutely no reason to encourage this kind of things, and therefore no reason to implement support for it.
  5. Yeah, the .iwad extension is a GZDoom-specific thing to support custom IWADs. It couldn't be just plain .wad because, under the hood, what happens is that at startup GZDoom scans through all .iwad files it finds to see if they're actual valid custom IWADs; and scanning through all .wad files would take far too long given how people may have thousands of those...

Why is it called Alien Vendetta anyway?

Alien Vendetta gives you the same initialism as Arch-Vile. Makes you think~~

How do you decompile an ACS script?

BEHAVIOR is the name of the lump that contains the compiled ACS code for a map. If you're talking about ACS libraries, it'll be largely the same thing, just with a different name. And the guarantee that it uses a ZDoom format that requires a disassembler -- I'm not aware of an ACS decompiler that can handle the ZDoom ACS formats; they're only for plain vanilla Hexen ACS. However, generally, the ACS source code is included in project files. There's no technical requirement for it but it just makes it easier to work on it. Have you checked to make sure the plain text files with the source code aren't already in your mod?

    War in Ukraine

What part of the world doesn't have a complicated history? Antarctica, maybe... The relationship between Ukraine and Russia has been complicated since the Mongol invasion broke the relative cultural unity of the Kievan Rus. That's the thing people always seem to forget. He was not pro-Russian. He was pro-Europe, until he got coerced by Putin. The EU Association Agreement was initiated in 2012, under President Yanukovych. The Plan on Priority Measures for European Integration of Ukraine was decreed by President Yanukovych. Just read this: https://en.interfax.com.ua/news/general/176156.html It's when he did an about-face on all this that protests started. And it's when he fled that the Parliament impeached him for dereliction of duty.

    War in Ukraine

While it is undeniable that the USA are imperialist, one would have to be willfully blind or very stupid to think Russia and China aren't imperialist. Heck in his long (and rather revisionist) speech about the history of Ukraine he gave just before the war began in earnest, Putin insisted that Ukraine was part of the Imperial Russia and that making it a different country was an invention of Lenin... So this is explicitly about restoring the Russian Empire of the Czars. In somewhat better news, courageous people in Russia are speaking out against the war. That may very well be one of the last thing they do, given how Putin and his cronies treat their dissenters.

Can Doom be considered a horror game?

Doom is: An action game A military game A sci-fi game A fantasy game A horror game None of these have to be mutually exclusive. You're a space marine fighting demons and demon-possessed zombies on space bases and in Hell.

    Valiant is FANTASTIC!

That behavior is not universal, e.g. GZDoom by default goes silent when it doesn't have the focus.
  12. Throwing in the sponge, eh? Makes sense, it never did seem like they made a serious effort at making their launcher actually functional.

Obviously very true Doom facts thread

If a cacodemon is hit by a charging lost soul right at the moment it opens its mouth wide to shoot a lightning ball, a special animation plays where the cacodemon swallows the lost soul and transforms into a pain elemental. True story.

Cant seem to get weapon bindings to function

I believe the problem is that you're using Blaster as your class name, and it's already in use. So your player class is set up to use the Heretic blaster weapon, rather than your custom weapon. Rename it to something else, like MyBlaster or whatever. @xdarkmasterx: no, the "replaces" keyword only affects thing spawning in the map. It has no impact on weapon slots. Also inheriting from DoomWeapon instead of Weapon wouldn't change much.

    Valiant is FANTASTIC!

You didn't figure out the map's gimmick! Despite noticing the texture hint. "No dead fatties" indeed. Once you cross the yellow door, there's a switch that changes the "no dead mancubus" texture to a "yes dead mancubus" texture. It triggers a crusher that kills all the arch-viles. At this point it's safe to kill the fatso. Keep in mind if you go through Ancient Aliens that the first several maps in AA are basically variants of this gimmick. Not the exact same setup of course (it only works on the MAP07 slot) but the basic idea that there is one annoying monster that's placed in in a central position so that it can harass you throughout most of the map, and you just have to Deal With It because you can't afford to just kill it first. If you play by the map's rule and play under the pressure of that monster while dealing with the rest, at the end you're rewarded by a cheap and convenient way to kill your nemesis for that level, by crusher or telefragging. It also has my all-time favorite hint texture:

    Megawad?

What you can do is make maps that you release individually at first to get feedback. And then you can collect them together into a megawad once you have enough of them, and perhaps even rework/polish up the older ones with the skills you have accrued in the meantime.

Doom 2 : Console commands not working

You seem to be confusing console commands with command line parameters. Parameters are sent to the program when you launch it. So that's what Doom Launcher and similar apps let you enter. Console commands are entered in the game, during the game, by pulling down the console.

    PowerSlave Exhumed Released

Based on the videos posted here, there are two nitpicks I can see: Dynamic lights are too bright (like for the Anubis projectiles). In the console original it colorizes the area more than it brightens it, it seems. In the remaster the light tends to kinda wash out the textures in white. The underwater air indicator is really ugly. That flat and opaque red ring. In the console original, it was translucent, which made it less of an eyesore. But I think I'd prefer the Build version's lung indicator actually.

    Baron of hell anatomy?

Barons are actually quite low on the nobility hierarchy. At the bottom of the pecking order, you've got knights. Then above you have baronets, but that's a weird rank that's only recognized in some countries. Barons are just about as low as you can get in landed nobility. Above them they have viscounts, then counts (aka earls), then marquis (the lowest title that's is addressed as "your highness" instead of just "sir/lady <title>"), then prince, then dukes (yes, dukes are above princes), then archdukes and grand dukes, finally king and emperor, the titles that are to be addressed as "your majesty". I believe baronets of Hell have 750 hp, viscounts of Hell have 1250 hp, counts of Hell have 1500 hp, marquesses of Hell have 2000 hp, princes of Hell have 2500 hp, dukes of Hell have 3000 hp (like spiderdemons), archdukes of Hell have 3500 hp, grand dukes of Hell have 4000 hp (like cyberdemons), kings of Hell have 5000 hp, and emperors of Hell have 6000 hp. Good thing we never encounter all these bullet sponges during our trips to Hell!

    Bad energy drink?

I only drink non-sweetened black tea. As for energy jolts, I'd rather recommend, whenever possible, a power nap instead.

Can Doom be considered a horror game?

Yeah but that's interesting because Doom's soundtrack is a lot more contrasted than people think. E1M1: At Doom's Gate. Definitely actiony. Here you are to kill the bad guys and save the day! E1M2: The Imp's Song. Still actiony, but slower tempo. Those monsters don't seem so tough. E1M3: Dark Halls. Kinda ambient, actually, but with a nice beat. Uh, there's bigger monsters, too. And invisible ones! (E1M9: Hiding the Secrets. Pure action; but this is a secret level.) E1M4: Kitchen Ace (And Taking Name). Back to action! Whatever kind of weird monsters, you're ready! E1M5: Suspense. A sinister song with sad strings and ominous sounds. Perhaps it sinks in you're the only survivor. E1M6: On the Hunt. Action, definitely, but frantic one. The start of the song is basically an alarm blaring in your ears. E1M7: Demons on the Prey. Back to the slow, ominous music. This heralds the ineluctable triumph of evil. E1M8: Sign of Evil. A dirge. A slow, mournful song that tells you you're gonna die in this level.

    Valiant is FANTASTIC!

Yeah, @skillsaw is around. You'll probably also enjoy Lunatic and Vanguard, two older and smaller projects that are kind of prototypes for Valiant. And yes, Ancient Aliens is excellent. I'll also echo Eviternity and add both episodes of Back to Saturn X.
  23. You can detect the format automatically by looking for the existence of a BEHAVIOR lump. If there is one, it's a Hexen-format map. Otherwise, it's Doom format. And then there's UDMF...
  24. Vanilla doesn't really handle textures taller than 128 -- it always tile vertically at 128. (And only 128. That's why you get graphical glitches if you try to tile a texture that's vertically shorter than 128.) Ports that handle textures of arbitrary heights will not have a problem, but that won't work in vanilla compat. As for width, as long as you stay in powers of two, there's no problems to expect. Did you know that the official IWADs do include textures that are 512 or even 1024 pixels wide?
