  1. Indeed, there are very few depictions of concentration camps in movies and basically none in video games. Surprisingly few even in literature. It is extremely hard to get it right, factually or tonally, to give the topic justice. I mean, it's most likely the greatest atrocity in the history of humankind, so no pressure! This is why it was left mostly to survivors and Jewish authors to choose how to tackle its messaging. And what's been paramount to this is that you pick a lane and then stick with it. You want to show the entire awfulness, you keep it somber. You want to humanize the victims, you uplift it with a parody. But you simply do not cross the beams and flipflop between a violent campy power fantasy, parodic jokes and homages, and extremely gruesome "historically accurate" details. That sends a message that you don't really give a shit about the underlying issue and it's just window dressing for your silly fps. Do silly fps games have the right to exist? Sure, but their authors don't get to dictate what's tactful or sensible. Let us postulate a simple axiom that BoA miserably failed to follow: You shall not cross over concentrated camp and concentration camps.
  2. Oh boy, we have a platonic debater here! We are debating on abstracted merits now! How can any of your claims be real if I am the only real thing in the universe?
  3. To complete this thread's nazi bingo, it is actually "its creator".
  4. I looked. I saw mm being loaded in one populated server. With Brutal Doom. That's, like, a direct repudiation of your point, heh. MM may be popular with certain crowds, but it's almost an encyclopedic definition of what's written in the thread title, no matter what spin you personally put on it. MM, like Eternal Doom, often uses sensibilities of 90's crpgs in its layouts - and that means mazes and switchhunts. "But I like it, and so do these people currently playing it," I hear you clamor. Well, have you considered your personal opinions, and theirs, aren't compatible with modern standards?

Has anyone ever used the term "gibs" in public

That's because the monster's health must drop below the negative equivalent of its top health. She saw you for the disgusting fraud you are!

About You: List 9 important Doom WADs.

I suspect my crossover appeal won't get me many rightward swipes. But it's okay for you to hate me, plebeian. Hmph.
  8. Czech language is ultra-violence difficulty by itself. And Czech grammar? Nightmare, even for natives. Possibly the biggest grammatic pitfall is the equivalence of "i" and "y", they're the same phonetically in Czech, but there are complex rules on which one should be used in written form and kids spend a LOT of time grinding them in elementary school. E.g., there's the conformity of subject and predicate in the plural: male animate: The men went silent. = Muži utichli. male inanimate: The winds went silent. = Větry utichly. female: The women went silent. = Ženy utichly. But also: The songs went silent. = Písně utichly. middle: The animals went silent. = Zvířata utichla. This is annoying, particularly when it becomes contextual. "What about women? They went silent." "A co ženy? Utichly." You can see how the context can get lost. Also a group of twenty women and one man would follow the male animate case, talk about patriarchy. :V But it gets worse. There are letters, like "r" or "k", that can only be followed by "y", unless it is a foreign word. On the flipside, only "i" goes after "c" or "ž". Then there are hard letters like "t" or "n" that are only followed by "y", except if you use "i", they become soft letters "ť" and "ň", spelled differently, but the accent is not written. And then there's the ambiguous letters like "b", "s" or "v". Here the language outright gives up and there are no rules - there are only "listed words" that go with "y". Kids learn them as you'd learn a poem and they're practiced by the teacher reading out trick sentences and kids writing them down with no help tools. It's called "the dictate", heh. But hey, still better than Danish.
  9. Same, I was mostly just loud in the preparation stages and played matchmaker for kraflab and Xaser. But it's great to see the team's effort bear fruits.
  10. As always - by brutally beating up his commanding officer who ordered to fire into peaceful protesters. ACAB minus one.

    What Are We Drinking?

As a rum drinker, I've recently fallen in love with Kirk and Sweeney 18-year. The taste is pleasant and smooth, great balance for prolonged sipping, avoids harsh burn or overstated sweetness. The aftertaste is oaky, very intriguing, makes you suck on your tongue, heh. It's not the cheapest one, but well worth the money.
  12. Fuck that shit, civility is overrated. If you, just for the sake of argument, hypothetically, go into debating the advantages of eugenics, I will tell you to fuck off without engaging your """points""" on their """merits""". Let me flip the script: if free speech is such a sacred cow to you, how the fuck can you advocate for civility? I should have the right to abuse the living shit out of you and your mom.

    Cacowards 2021 Mentionation Thread

It's great if the thread outgrew its original purpose and people use it to fish for good wads, however there is absolutely no way we'd ever consider a homer award like that. It's already stressful enough to consider projects in which committee members are involved and "expelling" them from the discussion. Tooting our own horn on how good cacowards are as a concept is unacceptable.

    Alien Vendetta demos [-complevel 2]

Hello @Hereunder, I have moved your runs from the AV thread here, because they're not world records - personal best times go into this thread no matter the wad. Also please use complevel 2 (Doom 2-equivalent) for AV, complevel 3 is Ultimate Doom-equivalent and not allowed. Lastly, please only use zip files for uploading. The DSDA only accepts those to the database, it helps with their automated processes. Have fun speedrunning! edit: Never mind the WR/PB issue, I had to be looking at wrong table sections in the archive. Apologies, restored to the proper thread - could you edit your posts and reupload the archives as zips? And if I understand it correctly - just the first demo is cl3, right? Since it's a nomo, that shouldn't affect anything, but do be careful about that in the future.

    YouTube ads are amazing

Richard Strauss - Also sprach Zarathustra plays in the background... Let me introduce you to SponsorBlock. It's a crowdfunded thing where people tag sponsored segments into a global database, then your browser marks that segment and doesn't play it/skips it by default. Worked for me pretty well so far, even though the model means smaller content creators might not have an entry by the time you're watching a fresh video. Oh and you can whitelist your fav creators if you care about that.
  16. Just to clarify, the corpse height (and thus minimum required opening) is 14 units, not zero.

    Alien Vendetta demos [-complevel 2]

How rude, this is unbecoming of respected speedrunners. Who am I kidding, soak me in more blood!

    Equinox demos [-complevel 2]

Something went horribly wrong with this demo. It doesn't miss just the extended footer, there's no 0x80 byte to end the demo either! This suggests the game was maybe ended irregularly, like a crash or system-forced shutdown. On the other hand, the demo is over three minutes long with endless waiting in the intermission, so colour me flabbergasted. I think your switch from pr+um to dsda-doom caused something catastrophic, because your other demos are in order. Perhaps try from a clean install?
  21. This event was a great idea, loved it even tho I only played a support role. I'd definitely love to see more of these! And of course congrats to Dubzzz and Tez, that was an intense race until the last hours!

Why Do Pwads Almost Never Have a Story

Story exposition in intermissions is easy, because as a narrator you can go however serious, goofy or meta as you want. We certainly enjoyed ourselves writing the flavour text for Ancient Aliens, heh. Ingame dialogues are a different beast. First of all, they require Zdoom scripting or similar, so they're not going to be available to most projects. Secondly, unless you are making a parody mod, you're more or less stuck with seriousness... and a lot of modders will want to avoid this possible cringe trap. I mean, Winter's Fury is a gorgeous and endlessly impressive mapset, but damn, that story and ingame dialogues are a pitiful waste of effort, heh. I don't think we need more of "your commanding officer tells you the mission objectives he just rolled on the random map idea generator" and writing dialogue for doom monsters is the worst. So it's probably better to only do it if you're confident you're doing it right. Oh and maybe it's also worth considering that people might not want to give their protag a character. Not in the porno intro sense, but in the avatar sense - the more you characterize the protag, the less "Our Hero = You" they are.

    Prboom-plus and co-op

This is a massive rabbit hole. p2p over internet will never work right, zdoom had to learn this lesson the hard way. chocolate-doom introduced server/client architecture for multiplayer, which is no small task and at that point you're basically competing with the dedicated online ports. There are so many things dsda-doom should be focusing on, and multiplayer is IMO the very last of them.
  24. Hmm, could work... unless VPO curse strikes, heh.
