To say that Quake is a Doom rip-off is a bad mistake, because both games may have similar gameplay, but they have differences to distingish between them, such as Doom is colorful and addicting, with focus on action, while Quake is more darker and scarier, with focus on both survival and action.
Either way if your friend is offended by this, i'm sorry, but people should think twice before bashing a game with similarites between each other.
