Any Free PC games you can recommend?

Don't know if you're into space sims, but if you are, I'd suggest a game I remember fondly from my childhood that you can now download freely and legally: Wing Commander (the first one). Download it here: http://www.wcnews.com/news/update/10285

If you like vertical shmups, Tyrian 2000. It's free on GoG.com, just register and you instantly have it. You can choose between lots of different weapons, and unlike in many games of this type, you don't die in a single hit. Also, the story is hilarious. I recommend activating Impossible mode for proper balance though. (For those who think I'm one of those loons who always advises the hardest difficulty no matter what, you're wrong. Impossible is only the fourth skill level out of six.) Although Episode 5 might be better played in regular Hard mode.

If you don't mind Final Fantasy type games and RPG Maker graphics,I strongly recommend Doug Carpenter's Everlong v3.2X. Think you're a master at console-style RPGs ? Then be ready for this game to play lots of tricks on you, especially in the later areas. The plot and characters are also somewhat more thought-provoking than in many commercial games of this type. And of course, just like the name says, you'll be here for quite a while, even if you don't dive into the numerous side quests. The official website is here:

I you want a sidescrolling action platformer, I recommend Iji by Daniel Remar. The main appeal of this one is that the gameplay and story are very interwoven, and almost every little action you take modifies the direction the plot will take. The game is fast, intense and violent as all hell (although not particularly bloody),with very fun and intimidating enemies to fight, and full of mysterious little secrets to figure out and discover. There's also something of a deconstructive point to the story, in a meta game commentary way. You won't necessarily agree with it, but at the very least it's well presented. Website is here:

EDIT: How could I forget Genetos ? A game which Space Invaders: Infinity Gene quite clearly ripped off. Fly through the various eras of the shmup genre, and find different ways to change your playstyle in order to unlock all the secret weapons. Link:
