Level-by-level analysis of Doom

A crushing ceiling might be an example of North Korea LOL!

I find it to be more suited toward the National Socialist government of Germany in the early 1940's.

Hmmm

E1M1 - North Korea (crushing ceiling)
E1M2 - Soviet Union (main room)

could E1M8 symbolize the united states? We should talk about that when we come to it.

YEAH! And the Barons of Hell could be George Bush and Dick Cheney! And the Doom Player could be France! Imagine a doom player signifying a whole country! It's almost like a refreshing blast of psychosexual mutilation a la B.F. Skinner!

Or Egyptian tombs. Don't those movies usually portray that they made crushing ceilings?

Indeed, a flashback to ancient Egypt in future times also fits with the current theme of flashbacks to ancient stories regarding hell and demons. I believe you've discovered a whole aspect of Doom that has never been uncovered before!

Yes, it's a very novel pastiche. Have you thought about the Freudian symbolism, such as the significance of Barons as a Father symbol and imps, with the clearly visible hole between their legs, as a Mother symbol?

Although the green on the mountains may look like plutonium to you, what about the sky? Wouldn't that indicate sometype of atmosphere?

Now I completely understand why Serious Sam: The First Encouter was considered so "DooM-ish"!!! It was set in Egypt! GameSpy is as ingenious as the placement of imps as you near the exit of E1M2.

Bush is merely a puppet and could not stand on his own. Thus, I believe they represent Rumsfield and Cheney.

LOL You're Right! And maybe the spectres outside their little boxes are democratic senators!!!

The "atmosphere" may in actuality consist of poisonous gases released by various mining facilities. ID software is clearly being conscious of our own enviromental problems.

I think the ammo placement was a bit off. I always ended up with 400 bullets at the end of the map, leaving behind at least 3 or 4 boxes of bullets in the dark halls. Also, I think the backpack should have been introduced lated, like around E1M4 or E1M5.

I think there's one thing we forgot to mention so far. The armor placement directly in front of you at the start. What did that small unreachable alcove really represent?

That may be true. But why did they suggest wasting valuable nuclear waste by placing it in exploding barrels? Why not instead recycle the sludge to make children's toys or shotguns?

All these hidden political and philosophical elements really make me wonder: what could the 13 steps of the staircase behind the red-key door represent?

That which you always strive to achieve, but never quite reach... Could it be a smirk from Carmack and Romero to all doom-playing geeks who can't get laid?

Yeah, it's amazing! It reminds me of triskadekaphobia, which is the fear of the number 13! Maybe the level was designed to be scary! Also that reminds me of those triangle Triscuit crackers! Do you think zombiemen like Triscuits?

I always tried getting up there just so that it would show up on the map.

While I don't think that's political, it's clearly religious. As any Christian would immediately see, the 13 steps signify the 12 holy apostles and Jesus Christ. After all, you couldn't win against the forces of Hell without a holy blessing!

But how did you enter hell with a holy blessing! You couldnt even get to the 2nd and 3rd episodes without a trip through the underworld! Maybe the doom guy raped an imp on the way or something?

Impossible! Why would the doom guy have sex with the enemy?

Maybe he has an imp fetish! Resulting from his childhood experiences and a bad relationship with his cacodemon! You never know, the doom guy always seemed like the strong, quiet type.

Perhaps imps are actually succubi - demons that seduct people. After all, Doom 2 had mancubi, but not succubi. Perhaps succubi are after all there, just named differently. Id had to name them "imps" to avoid making the game X-rated.

You must really love that hole between their legs.

A very common war story is the raping of innocent enemy civilians due to frustration regarding lack of a sexual outlet. Given the vast number of Imps throughout the Doom series, I believe they qualify as the average everyday citizen of Hell, and thus are prime pickings for release of sexual tension.

That shows the significance of the four black pixels near the imps anus! It was originally X-rated!
