How do people come up with map layouts?

Greetings, I would try and make a map layout that is very interconnected. For instance you can see later areas of a map via a window or It could also be an elevator that connects the early and later areas of a map. It was a feature in the Dark souls franchise that made exploration very interesting. I would focus on just making the basic layout first just as simple rectangular rooms and then go back to polish it up later. For example build an outdoor area and adding features such as a fountain later on. Most important: I would recommend drawing on paper first. I feel it's faster to draw a basic sketch and see if something works well in your map than making it in the editor. I hope this helps, Lodestar

    Doom Pictures Thread 2020

@StalkerBlade Very impressive. The visuals are unreal.
  3. Greetings, I have used the program for about 100 hours with no problem but now that my map is getting larger when I click save the program becomes unresponsive and does not recover. I have to close through task manager and lose all progress. My computer is not struggling as CPU/RAM is fairly low. Has anyone got a solution that might fix this? I have tried reinstalling Ultimate Doom Builder, I have tried GZDoombuilder but both programs have the same problem. Program runs smoothly only crashes when saving. Thanks Lodestar EDIT: Solved. For anyone with the same problem use map analysis to check for very short line defs. Fix all of those and copy and paste your entire map into a new blank map. It worked for me, I hope this saves someone else some day! @Bridgeburner56 gets credit for his advice.

    Portal visible above door

Thanks for your suggestion. I see this limitation of the doom engine that I cannot overcome with a line portal. I believe it will be too hard to convert the inside to a floor ceiling portal so I am going to move the entrance to a position not visible from this height. Thanks Lodestar

    Portal visible above door

Greetings, I have created a portal (156: Line set portal in ultimate doom builder) as an entry to a building in my map. The portal works great (too great..). At ground level it looks normal, however when I am standing at a high position I can see into the building above the door. Is there a way I can change the portal height so it doesn't do this? Align textures on stairs

Greetings, I have a problem when trying to align textures on stairs. I know about lower unpegged to pin the texture at the same height however textures are not aligned on the X axis. Instead of continuing the texture, it repeats from the beginning of every step (see picture attached). What is the best way to align these textures? Lodestar
  8. @General Rainbow Bacon Thanks for the feedback. With the feedback I am getting I am learning so much. I am currently working on a new map right now WAY bigger and more ambitious. I do not have a release date, it will take months for sure but I so far have a basic layout done. Format is now in UDMF which opens the gateway to more sophisticated techniques. It wil be in an outdoor setting with the ability to explore buildings. Ancient themed too.
  9. @LiT_gam3r Austinado has kindly uploaded a video of the map. Starts at 14 minutes in. Regards Lodestar

  13. I have created a map titled "The Eleventh Hour". It translates to the last moment/last chance. The map is in Boom: Doom 2 (Doom format). I tested the game using GZDoom. The map will NOT require freelook or jumping but it WILL require crouch. Doom 2 IWAD used and MAP01. This map is designed as a single large map that should take around 45 minutes on medium difficulty. All original Doom 2 content is used (No new textures or sprites used, except for title screen). The map contains multiple secrets. On medium the game is a good difficulty. It is challenging but not overwhelming. The game starts off easy but has a good progression of difficulty. The map can be very difficult on Nightmare mode. The story follows Doomguy's resurrection from the grave to complete one final task. The UAC have opened a portal and Hell has invaded Earth. Your objective is to infiltrate the UAC labs in order to destroy the Icon of Sin a second time round. This is my first map. If you do play it please give me constructive feedback. Such as your favourite part/s of the map or least favourite. Build time estimated at 100+ hours. Thanks Lodestar. the_eleventh_hour.zip
