Using dummy sectors for sound propagation

Question

I want to make a cleaner way of having teleporting monsters activate and I've heard it could be possible to use dummy sectors for sound propagation in BOOM. I have no idea how to get it working though, or if it's even possible.

It's pretty simple. Ultimate Doom Builder has a function in Sector mode called "Join Sectors." That's JOIN sectors, do not confuse it with Merge sectors. Create a dummy sector on the map where you want to put your monster closet. It's properties don't matter, because the next thing you'll do is to select the sector you want sound to propagate from, then select your dummy sector, then press J. That will apply the properties of the first sector to the dummy sector, and they will now be considered the same sector.

That does mean that if you try and drag-select your original sector, you won't select it unless you also select around the dummy sector as well.

You can now use your dummy sector for your teleport closet, or at least connected to it so sound can pass through.

One thing to bear in mind is that in UDB, if you manipulate the positioning of any of the joined sectors, there is a possibility (depending on what tool you're using, I think Sector always does it and Vertex always doesn't) that you'll unjoin the sectors and accidentally break the connection. I'm sure it's dependent on a setting somewhere, but this is using the default settings.

I actually cannot believe it was that simple, thanks a bunch!

Can confirm: I'm currently working on finilizing the CP Box Doom with DoomGappy co, and that map had to be moved around so much and soooo many boxes have broke because of broken joined sectors and it. Has. Been. A. PAIN to get them all joined back up!

But if your making a normal map than it shouldn't be that much of a bother even when you end up unjoining some sectors. I'm just airing out from dealing with a very abnormal project

Thanks, that's really useful information. AFAICT there's no setting to change this in UDB, if someone knows differently, please share.

Edit -> Merge Dragged Vertices Only (or use the buttons in the toolbar).
