How do you handle damaging floors?

Recommended Posts

Nukage and lava are the floors that do damage in my general maps, with lava doing worse damage than nukage and primarily representing either molten metal in bases or lava in Hell maps. Water doesn't do damage unless it's something like polluted/poisonous water (in which case that shit should be marked clearly), electrified water (again, this should be marked clearly), or freezing water (which generally only occurs in very cold-looking maps with custom textures and such). Blood I generally do not make damaging unless it's glowing and clearly toxic.

I like to flip a coin for each particular liquid flat in each map, heads for non-damaging, tails for damaging. I developed this technique following the example of Plutonia.

I have a entire rainbow of liquids in my megawad.  Would you like to know more?

2.  Brown (Grey water) - no damage

3.  Blue (Fresh water) - no damage

4.  Green (Nukage) - 5% damage, Mean Green Nukage - 10% damage

5.  Yellow (Electric Pseudo Waste) - 10% damage

6.  Orange (Acid) - 10% damage

7.  Purple (Demonic mystery only found in the necropolis) - 10% damage

8.  Red (Hell Blood)  - 10% damage

9.  Lava - 20% damage, Cracked Lava - 5% damage

10.  White (Ice) - No damage, and no animation

I think the key here is to be consistent through a wad, so for example if green slime is a damaging floor in map01, it should be also a damaging floor in next maps. And I'll never understand why blood is sometimes a damaging floor.

I remember a certain wad, where damaging floors were so overused, that I limited them in my own wad.

There are also authors who put lava near snow textures.
