Professor Hastig Posted December 27, 2023 I like high resolution, widescreen support, proper mouselook/mouseaim and full color resolution. Dynamic lights are a plus but not essential. 0 Share this post Link to post

With mods and custom maps, it kinda reminds me of indie games like ultrakill with downscaling on, or dusk at 800 x 600 (playing on a potato rn). Anyways how do you like your doom? You like it smooth and sharp? Chunky and pixelated with a side of a limited pallet? Texture filtering? Or extreme lighting and 3d models? Maybe if I find any interesting Ill check them out Good question. Since you point it out, I actually do play classic/90s style wads in 320x200 resolution software renderer on GZDoom with no fancy effects (bloom, ambient occlusion, etc.) Toggle linear filter on. I'm doing this for Sigil II right now. Although I use the godly Arachno Soundfont for the music which really elevates it (but I have OPL and SC-55 soundfonts too if I feel like it). I even use the mouse for movement, space for use, and right click for strafe, like in original Doom and other 90s shooters, and you can do that in GZDoom. Other times I will go as far in the opposite direction--if it's Brutal Doom for e.g., I will do full HD 1080p with bloom, chromatic aberration, ambient occlusion, heijl dawson (high contrast) tone effect--I like palette tone effect too--gives it a software/quakey look while using OpenGL. I love GZDoom precisely because it's super-customizable from DOSBox levels of vanilla to ultra-modern cutting edge wadcraft. Only two things it can't do are multiplayer or play menu demos. P.S. GZDoom is for custom wads. For the original games, it's DOSBox all the way. With aspect ratio correction off, and scaler = none. 0 Share this post Link to post

Li'l devil Posted December 27, 2023 Generally I have no preference, except that recently I realized I want to play only on full resolution (1920x1080 for me). I want to see everything clearly, and I also feel like playing on low crispy resolutions strains my eyes sometimes. 1 Share this post Link to post
A Handsome Fridge Posted December 27, 2023 (edited) GZDoom is the only port I use, I switch around with the sector light mode, depending what looks best on the map I'm on. Tend to stick to 'Doom' in general. Resolution is either 2560x1440 fullscreen or 1920x1080 windowed when recording. Vulkan Hardware accelerated, cause that's what works fine for me. *Always* mouselook, you can't change my mind. Eh, pretty standard stuff I guess 0 Share this post Link to post
Li'l devil Posted December 27, 2023 Forgot to say, but I love texture filtering! Especially bilinear! 0 Share this post Link to post
Eon Toad Posted December 29, 2023 Lately I've really been enjoying the portability of playing Doom through the Freedoom app on my Retroid. 0 Share this post Link to post
Plerb Posted December 29, 2023 I use DSDA-Doom 99% of the time for single-player stuff. I use the software renderer, 800x600 resolution, 35 FPS, and I don't use mouselook except for rare cases where I'll briefly enable it if I need to see something well above or below me. 0 Share this post Link to post
