About This File

A total conversion set in the mid-50's on a weapons research base deep in the heart of Greenland. You thought this would be a nice boring way to finish your career as a Marine.

You thought wrong. (see cah_manual.pdf for the full story)

A mod with an incredibly well-crafted atmosphere, which it quickly ruins by stuffing enemies into every last iota of space in the most random, mindless way possible.  Imagine combining slaughtermaps with "realistic" gameplay that makes everything move at a snail's pace.  Imagine having a ton of backtracking, and then intentionally disabling the map when you made every place look the goddamn same.  Only worth playing for the nostalgia, which I don't have.

"I could never find the code for the door blocking the flamethrower. Is that area a trick, or something?" My automatic interpretation of "find another way to open it" was "shoot the lock". It worked.

Atmospheric as hell and terrific game feel. Worst part about it is going back and forth across huge maps looking for items and trying to remember where they are used.

I really enjoyed the visual design and the plot (and all the little details). Unfortunately, this mod is still buggy for me -- it always locks up when I reach the radio in the abandoned base. I get the text screen, but it doesn't return me back to normal play. I stay frozen in that little side room and I've tried everything including noclip, etc. So it looks like I'll never get to see the end of this mod, which is a big disappointment given how much I enjoyed it up to that point.

Without a single goddamn doubt this wad will remain legendary. I love the mod to this day and can't stop thinking of how cool it'd look as a movie. It has all the plot elements for a perfect shoot.

Sometimes it really scared the shit outta me. Great TC with few minor bugs (some dialogues go away too quick, some battles are rather hard, some rare reloading/shooting mess). Very atmospheric and freezing cold. Absolutely recommended. 4,5/5 Cacodemon

Well, let's get the bad out of the way first. 1) Occasional pitch black areas, 3 or 4 of them a necessary visit 2) Slow framerate with snow enabled 3) Around one to three seconds of gameplay lost upon loading some savegames. Aside from that, this is a wonderful TC, still worth a rounded 5 stars. Of course, I still wonder, I could never find the code for the door blocking the flamethrower. Is that area a trick, or something?

Dang, Son....this was an epic, epic story. I mean, I was on the edge of my seat pratically from the start! Thrilling, sometimes eerie, music makes everything work perfectly for the frozen, desolate base. And the gameplay is erratic, but still fun and engaging. There's a lot to do, but that's the beauty of it--it's heavily involved, not just "kill the monsters, get keys, find the exit, repeat." And the ending (after the final battle), is so chilling. Very well done! Do you plan on making a sequel? ;)

Very great TC. I felt like I was playing a doom version of The Thing. Very engaging story.

Probably the most professional project to date, and very damn good too. Easily comparable to Void and other unique great wads. I will concede that it is very difficult though 5* -Phobus

Really mmersive plot implementation: notes and recordings draw you in, voice acting is actually good! Custom weapons suited the wad very well, though custom monsters were merely small variations on the originals & not much variety really. Thought gameplay was balanced enough but sometimes marred by item hunting, though objectives are a VERY nice change from flat-out keyhunts. Does realistic mapping really well, but arguably some areas are left looking a bit bland. Even has two small vehicle sequences! 4/5

Very, very good TC. It has an intriguing story to tell and the gameplay is great aside from some item-hunting. Has support for ZDoom and GZDoom, and includes a software-renderer version.

This would have been so much better if it was possible to disable the dialogue boxes that almost totally block your view for a couple of seconds each time anything happens...

Cold as Hell is a fantastic Doom conversion. It has plenty of new artwork to feel "new", and the hub maps create a sense of non linearity... even though you have pretty defined goals. The worst part is the difficulty, this mod is VERY hard even on the easiest setting. I'm VERY glad the SE version was released, now it's possible to play this mod in its entirety.

Wonderful, wonderful game in itself, really. It's a lot different from Doom, as the enemies are much more able to hurt you badly, and your weapons, while more effective, require more skill to use properly. The balance is great, and the atmosphere, storyline, and background are fantastic. 5/5

Great WAD, solidly nails that fantasy castle crawling feeling, not too rough on the player nor overly stingy/generous on supplies, encourages good use of items, plenty of navigation and switch puzzles as is apt for Heretic, but also lets loose with a little slaughter.   Some areas could use slightly brighter lighting, and sometimes the next switch or door isn't signalled too well, but overall a fun and feisty fantasy fight fest.

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.
