Hell Revealed is a megawad, a 32-level replacement for DooM II, created by Yonatan Donner and Haggay Niv.

In Hell Revealed, you will find: 32 new high-quality very detailed levels, many new graphics including textures, flats, skies, status bars and others, full skill-level support and additional attention to coop-players, and extreme challenge.

Hell Revealed supports single player, cooperative (with additional weapons and enemies) and several maps have special DM parts (maps 1 and 2 are especially good for deathmatch).

oh Hell Revealed, you are touted as a fantastic megawad back in the Memento Mori/Requiem days of Doom modding, and that's particularly all because you are all "gameplay over graphics" as compared to everything else.

 

now, looking back at Hell Revealed, it's quite obvious that any and all inspirations to this wad have far eclipsed it. whether it be Kama Sutra, Alien Vendetta, and even Hell Revealed 2, Hell Revealed just doesn't hold onto any candles it used to have. but the keyword as to why Hell Revealed is considered so great is that it was inspirational. that's why people like it, that's why people reference it when they reference slaughter (though a look back at Hell Revealed reveals about 10 of the maps to actually be real slaughtermaps). the difficulty is still up there, higher than Plutonia for sure, and while the looks are not inspiring, the gameplay sure hits a boatload of strides, and shits at times.

 

so my biggest gripes with the set are, first of all, the problematic monster re-placement for different difficulty settings. most notable would be in MAP18, a map I despise for its deceiving difficulty. there's a few moments where I'm pretty sure playing on HMP is harder than it is playing on UV. take the big room that has two spiderdemons in an open space on UV that show up. these are replaced with archies on HMP and are harder to dodge, since the spiderdemons would probably just infight with each other. a number of other maps have this issue, where cyberdemons are replaced with archies when they could actually be a little harder to tangle with.

 

and the other issue with HR is that pretty much all of the maps are concept wads to some degree or have these interesting tidbit areas that while memorable, just don't play all that well in this day and age. the SSG room in MAP12 comes to mind, as well as the concept of MAP21, the usage of berserk in MAP09, and the reversal concepts in MAP28, plus the Cyberpunk maze and the notorious Afterlife which still remains the best map. HR doesn't go with a lot of proper themes either, the authors cared less about theming them appropriately for hard, scenario-based combat with some slaughters. Hell Revealed just isn't that good in 2019, but it sure inspired many creative children that further made modern sets better.

This is a particularly old Megawad. Roughly 15 years, give or take. That doesn't mean that old is not fun. This particular Megawad doesn't focus as much on design as it does on challenge. However, it still looks great, and offers a challenge in the later levels for Doomie Daredevils. ~Hank

One of the 5 all-time greatest, alongside the Memento Mori's, Alien Vendetta, and Requiem. Mostly wellknown for the insane difficulty of the later maps, but it has a lot more to offer. The architecture in some of the maps is nothing short of incredible and the gameplay is high quality. Most people should consider playing it on HMP skill, though. Especially if playing co/op. A classic. --5/5

F***ing hard and f***ing awesome. Play this with score doom and its addon pack and you're set for hours, maybe even days of endless fun and challenges. 10/5 stars

Obviously one of the best megawads ever. It's very hard, of course, but if that bugs you, play on a lower skill level. Every fight is actually carefully planned out and fun as hell, even if it might seem impossible at first. Also, the maps are really good-looking and contain the old-school charm that I love so much in WADs. This is a must. 5/5

Really, the difficulty is in putting thousands of higher level monsters in thick clumps in places where there is either architecture that restricts your movement or no architecture at all to defend yourself with.

It's about time I rated this classic, that not only inspired many later wads, but pretty much created a style of extreme difficulty and insane monster counts. Although the architecture may be considered simple by today's standards; what makes HR stand out is that the gameplay matches the difficulty and never lets up throughout. You may want to pull your hair out on some levels, but the addictive gameplay makes you keep coming back for more carnage. It gets a 5/5 from me.

dude this wad is frinkin insane! 18 years old and probably a massive single player of doom and quake the best FPSs in the world mind you lol but yeh the later levels were just mind blowing! i hav finished it now barely...but gonna fire up hell 2 just wish there was a third one coming out anywayz keep up the good work!

The kind of levels doomguy himself would make. Sure they arent the best in visuals (but this wad was made in the 90's) but it gets a 5/5 on sheer carnage alone. Playing post mortem with fast monsters kicked my ass, in a good way. What a gread WAD.

      Great WAD, solidly nails that fantasy castle crawling feeling, not too rough on the player nor overly stingy/generous on supplies, encourages good use of items, plenty of navigation and switch puzzles as is apt for Heretic, but also lets loose with a little slaughter.   Some areas could use slightly brighter lighting, and sometimes the next switch or door isn't signalled too well, but overall a fun and feisty fantasy fight fest.

      These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

      A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

      Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

      Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.
