About This File

One seemingly random day, I was sitting around doing nothing... when it hit me: The perfect way to make true reloading weapons in Zdoom. It worked like a charm in an example wad I put together, but I thought that a simple demo wad with a single test level would not do the reloading trick any justice... so two weeks later, I brought you this: Zen Dynamics, a Zdoom Revolution.

Zen is a 7-level partial conversion, with 10 new guns, complete with reloading, new baddies, music, textures, you name it. It has some pretty damn memorable moments, particularly in Map04 and Map07, and is not just some quickly thrown together wad.

This wad was originally released on the ZDoom forums, as a "public beta" of sorts, before releasing to the /idgames archive for all you crazy people to enjoy. :P

The initial release only took two weeks to finish, but as always, it was littered with random bugs and such. I released several revisions that fixed said bugs, but I got bored at just fixing minor stuff... so for the fabled 2.0 release, I added several things: a new level, a new weapon, and some story elements and such.

And now, I present you with the Anniversary Edition, packed with tons and tons of new features -- Altfires, Two more new weapons, and a brand-new map, Core Zero, perfect for mass-destruction addicts! :P

Yes, there's a small storyline involved, with the usual stuff like gateways and UAC and such, but the intro does a pretty good job at telling it, IMO. :P

The highlight of the wad is probably the weapons, which are pretty much a first in Zdoom history. Just the combination of advanced weaponry with Zdoom features like ACS and portals (which I know you'll love so much more after you've played Map04).

Either way, it's been way too long since I've released anything memorable, and I guarantee you will not forget this wad. :P Sorry for all the bragging and such, but hey.... it's true. :P

Personally the reload script and weapon coding is a little more convoluted and complicated than it needed to be, even for 2006. But hey, that means nothing while I'm actually playing! It sucks though that the weapons only work in the supplied maps. However, that can easily be fixed by moving the weapon scripts into a singular lump and telling zdoom to load it all the time with LOADACS. Lose the shitty maps and it will get 5 stars.

the actual mod is impressive, but the game design is just plain broken. the new monsters are pretty much unfair and i dont know why a wad where you have to reload every 10 shots is constantly cramming me into small rooms with a dozen barons of hell. the weapons are really impressive (i like using the knife to reflect shots) and the graphics are awesomee- the subtle pallette swaps on existing monsters like the cacodemon even worked very well.

Quick, someone find a way to just use the weapon set, the level design is so-so. using this weapon set would make playing custom wads more awesome.

Absolute Genius. The Weapons are memorable and unique. The Monsters are embeded well. The Storyline is amazing. The Atmosphere is pure gold. -----Memorable Moments------- 1- First Machete Kill 2- That bastard scientist 3- Hell. It's just not fair. -And a side note for the White Skull. I'm running Skulltag 97D5, and I've found that if you shoot the white skull "first", then the frequency of Blue-Flame slowdown drops. Can someone test this with a similar port...

The dual plasma smgs alone gets this at least 4 stars. I liked how all the weapons were made with a specific dynamic in mind so that there isn't really one weapon that stands out among the rest and is used isntead of the rest, just like in the original doom. Because you actually have a mind for balancing, I would give you 5 stars. As it stands, the maps weren't the strong point and so deduct one point. Maybe make a patch with better maps sometime soon?

This is awesome. Needs to be longer so there's even more of it. The music, the second boss and the attacks of the new enemies remind me a bit of vertical scrolling shoot-em-ups, specifically danmaku (curtain fire or "bullet hell") shooters, which is awesome.

Hey Xaser, you credited half of the doom community, but didn't mention me for the textures you borrowed from Rebirth and Castle Nevermore :/ Anyway, despite the mediocre level design this is an awesome wad; fun gameplay, great new weapons and quite interesting monsters! **** -Vader

this is great! one of the best out there! Xaser is the best weapons modder ever. even though most of the levels were taken from mmscraps and redone to make them look really good. overall i though this was one of Xaser's finest works of art. 5/5

^Good move, now everything is explained. However, that also calls for a potential for these weapons to be exported into a weapons mod with the coding power of today. Then we could rid this mapset of its crud maps. 4/5

High production values, but a few oddities. Level design is not great, it's often hard to tell where you're meant to go next for no real reason. You lose all your weapons at one point in the game for no other reason than "doom 3 did it", according to the readme. Overall, there's a lot of effort that's gone into this and it's a nice change. It's just not especially good. Also, there are quite a few sound effects stolen from Half-Life.

Great WAD, solidly nails that fantasy castle crawling feeling, not too rough on the player nor overly stingy/generous on supplies, encourages good use of items, plenty of navigation and switch puzzles as is apt for Heretic, but also lets loose with a little slaughter.   Some areas could use slightly brighter lighting, and sometimes the next switch or door isn't signalled too well, but overall a fun and feisty fantasy fight fest.

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.
