As much as I would like to say yes, it will probably never look as good as making something from scratch. However there are so many genius people in the doom community, someone might figure out a way to pull it off.

Actually, the normal mapped + PBR sprites were the first thing we made in the game. It kinda went from there. I guess you could say "because it looked cool" was the reason we did it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ In case you haven't seen; here's what they look like:

Hey Guys! This game is being made by me and @5hfifty! NewBlood is publishing (same guys as DUSK) If any of you are at PAX Melbourne you can come try it out and see. There should be some gameplay vids coming up over the weekend, will give you a good idea of what it's really like :)

The mountains themselves are CG. The clouds/sky look like they could be based off real images though.

Could be. Could also be a silhouetted mountain pic that goes with the clouds. I'll take a look tomorrow. Pic name is ZION.TIF. So I'm assuming somewhere in Zion national park.

Blackmantis just got some of the full CD's, we found the mountains in SKY2. More info coming later.

Yeah, it would be fairly easy with all these sources to make some nicer versions.

Found another source! seems like it was messed round with a little but it's definitely the source. The source file is MAJEST5.TIFF on the CD linked earlier by blackmantis.

Yep, you're right! I just stumbled on that image and was about to post it :) It's rotated 90 degrees in the game image.

We've found another one! The earth source from the press release beta SKY2. I feel like it's the same image on that computer screen of earth[patch TSCRN4, Doom.wad], but couldn't get it to line up.
