About This File

This level can be somewhat tough, considering that if you don't find the (very well-hidden) single-barrel shotgun, you'll have to get around with just the pistol.

Interesting things to note in this level are a drainable toxic waste pit, a conveyor belt maze, a crumbling corridor, and a lot of colored lighting like in the PSone Doom games.

The Overcoming is what happens when someone decides to make an ZDoom map without understanding the fundamentals of Doom mapping. This level consist of long corridors separated by square rooms, each with its own ZDoom gimmick, populated by Imps and Former Humans. Now the later part is not inherently an issue as pistol only maps can be fun if well executed. See Community Chest 1 Map01 for example. Here in The Overcoming the level provides too much ammo for the amount of enemies present. I will give the author credit for attempting a pistol only level as there are not enough of those.

Spoiler

The creator mentions the shotgun secret is hard to find which he is correct in stating. It is located behind a wall that needs to be shot in order to open. However there are two problems, this is located in a seemingly random portion of a dark maze and there is no indication that spot in the wall is different from any other section.

Chocholate rain. This is a simple map that, as the readme points out, resembles the Playstation version of Doom a bit (there are coloured lighting effects but few details). Chocolate rain. There are 84 baddies, exclusively imps and zombiemen. Chocolate rain. There's a dark maze. The secret shotgun is hidden behind an unmarked door that doesn't open. Chocolate rain. It's basically a bog-standard, empty-feeling 1994 level with lighting effects. I like turtles.

^ No need to put chocolate rain after each sentence and I like turtles at the end. Btw, 5/5.

Simple indeed and I did find the shotgun by the way. The only problem I hade with this map was the blue maze. 6/12/07

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
