DOOM BBS Add-Ons: An 800+ WAD mega dump

@fraggle Here's DEU v5.2, which I found on some old CD. Hope this is what you're looking for.

DEU52.7z

That does appear to be it. Thank you!

I spoke too soon. This appears to be the gcc port of 5.2, which I already have.

Oh, damn, I should've looked at the contents more carefully! Sorry! I'll keep it in mind to tell you if I ever find it for real.

But a note to @deathz0r that DEU52.ZIP is not actually DEU 5.2; it's just another copy of 5.21 with the wrong name. I haven't been able to find a copy of 5.2 either but I reconstructed the (probable) source by comparing the 5.2 and 5.21 GCC ports.

Thanks for that - I could have sworn I came across the real DEU 5.2 at some point and then replaced it when I've been going through finding cleaner ZIPs and didn't pay attention to the EXE size/date and source code being the same, but I must be having a fever dream since I could not relocate it since then.

(this is a quick post because the forum software has been holding onto a single line I wrote a week ago, and when I was writing a much longer post it decided to eat the entire thing when I changed pages and reverted back to that single line, very good shit)

(not getting any crashes though, what did you do to trigger it?)

For me, going to "Doom Extra's" and selecting any of the List options causes this out-of-memory error to pop up.

Ultimately not a huge loss - I was mostly curious to see how it displays the DOOM#.BBS files (which can be read in any text editor anyway), and to see whether it handled the .ZIPs or .GIFs itself.

Apologies for the radio silence, been juggling two other projects along with doing a lot of background work for this - more specifically, I've been doing a very thorough search for locating clean ZIPs (with the earliest date) that aren't polluted with BBS junk or FILE_ID.DIZ files that weren't made by the author. It dawned on me after going through mounting ISOs and relying on Shareware_CDs_List.txt for @thestarrover's uploads was rather ineffective and using that it would be best to extract the ISOs and ZIPs to hunt down known results instead. This shell command ended up being simple enough:

doot@x230 ~/d/D/_ISOs> find -iname 'dope*.zip' -exec ls -l --time-style="+%Y-%m-%d" {} \; | sort -k6

And from there, I was able to both find a significant number of clean sources and also found extra versions of programs along the way.

Here's the results, a lovely 102MB ZIP file!

https://www.mediafire.com/file/kq6ratc70psjkq6/doomedit.zip/file

EDIT 30/09/2023: I have noticed that there's multiple copies of DEUTEX 3.3 and 3.6 and DoomCAD 3.0 with the same filename, since I made this ZIP with a case-senstiive filesystem. This will be fixed soon(tm) along with including additions from @thestarrover

Save game editors, Doom<->Doom 2<->Heretic<->whatever converters, modem/network tools and frontends aren't of any particular interest to me, so I have been ignoring those. Docs/text files/tutorials are more of a "if I stumble upon them" kind of thing. I haven't done a broad *.exe search with this method for finding any [LOST MEDIA] editors, and anything I have included are editors I had already stumbled upon doing manual searches and checking random ZIPs. I'll probably do this eventually, this dump is fairly significant as it is. It cannot be stated enough that this could not have been done without the vast uploads of shovelware CDs, much respect to the uploaders and @thestarrover for significant ground work. (speaking of, The Pier Shareware CDs from #4 to #10 ended up netting a few results within the 021 sub-folder of each CD, but I haven't spent any time searching for other Doom content beyond targeting specific filenames)

"clean ZIPs" in this context refers to the extracted content of the ZIP files being untouched - it didn't dawn on me until a couple hours before I was going to post this that a good number of these ZIPs have headers added primarily for the use of displaying BBS/shovelware CD information when extracting with tools like PKUNZIP. Oh well. I might revisit this at some point, but it's low priority for me. I also grabbed a bunch of stuff directly from ftp.gamers.org to preserve filedates (literally the entire utils folder, please don't ban me :)

A few files were renamed because they had the same file name for multiple versions (WadAuthor). I did not rename WinDEU 5.24 to a 8.3 format as WinDEU 5.23 is already renamed to a 8.3 format.

There's still a good number of ZIP files that have junk files in them, were only found unzipped or were found from non-ISO sources which doesn't keep a period-relevant timestamp for the ZIP files. These are as follows:

Some other notes:

  • WADED 1.87 and 1.88 are not included as they are registered-only versions that are tied to specific shovelware CDs - they only remove the 30 second nag screen at the start.
  • I have found copies of DCK 2.2 and DEEP 6.13 with slightly newer file dates and different filesizes for the EXEs but otherwise identical content - I believe these are hotfixes. I've added them in the alt sub-folder of those respective programs. Additionally, I've found two different distributions of DeHacked 1.3 (one has a couple of additional DEH files) and I'm not sure which one is correct - I've added the one with more DEH files to the alt sub-folder.
  • Something which I did stumble upon that caught my interest is an sound editor that is likely to predate DMAUD 0.2 - Doom Sound Editor 1.0 (DSEDIT) by Scott Bradshaw and Tim Chalk. The file dates are from January 2nd 1994, but since alt.games.doom was created on January 5th I have no idea where to find confirmation on USENET. Version 2.0 contains a changelog with dates listed and a reference on waiting for Doom 1.2, so I believe that it's plausibly the first editor to modify the IWAD data. Like DMAUD 0.2, it does not have the ability to replace the IWAD sounds with files that are longer than the original sounds.
  • All versions of ZenNode are available from Marc Rosseau's website, so I have only included those that I have found on CDs for (somewhat) preserving file dates.
  • DETH 3.7 and ZenNode 0.97a both have zipped files... but they have a non-PK header that is meant to be used with the launcher that comes with D!Zone Gold. Stricter unzip programs will complain, but others like Total Commander don't give a crap and will simply extract them. I have included them in the d!zone sub-folder for the respective programs.
  • RMB2X is an unidentified version between RMB 2.1 and 3.0 that exclusively appeared on 3D Game Alchemy for Doom, Doom II, Heretic and Hexen
  • I see @Redneckerz mentioning two WAD Masters and I raise a third one, by yet another person!
  • I see that 1-DEUII has already been posted - as noted, it was made in September 8th 1994 which is over a month before Doom II's release. There's a file within /idgames/utils/level_edit/deu named deuII_readme (which is not accessible via the /idgames web frontend) which is a USENET (couldn't find on a.g.d?) post from Raphael Quinet commenting on it:
  • Date: Sat, 1 Oct 1994 20:20:34 +0100
    From: Raphael Quinet <quinet@stud.montefiore.ulg.ac.be>

The latest version of DEU is 5.21. The next version of DEU will be DEU 5.3
and it will be released on October 10th (hopefully). This version will be
compatible with Doom(tm) and Doom II(tm).

A pirate copy of DEU has been released under the name DEU-II or DEU2. This
is not an official version! If you see it somewhere, please notify the
admin of the site and tell him that he has some illegal software on his
server. The (anonymous) pirate who patched DEU to make it compatible with
Doom II has done several Bad Things:
    - He did not comply with Id Software's request that no editor working with
Doom II should be released before the official release date of Doom II
      (October 10th).
    - He did not comply with what we wrote in the DEU documentation: we requested
that any software based on DEU is called something else, because we want to
be the only ones releasing a program called DEU.
    - He certainly did not sign the third-party software license from Id Software.
This license ("data utility license") allows the authors of Doom editors to
release their program and to use the Doom trademark in the program and
      documentation.

                                                  The DEU team.

  • JBSP 1.0, 1.01
  • Jumble 1.0, 1.01, 2.0
  • NWT 1.0, 1.2
  • RanDOOM 1.4
  • Renegade Graphics DoomED 2.7

  • WADED 1.00, 1.12, 1.13, 1.16, 1.21, 1.23, 1.30, 1.31, 1.74, 1.75, 1.76, 1.77, 1.78, 1.79, 1.80, 1.82 - 1.43 and 1.47 appear to be the same version based on the slightly contradictory changelog history in WADED147.ZIP and WADED149.ZIP
  • WADWHAT 2.1, 2.2
  • WARM 1.4
  • WinTex 4.4, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8
  • DOOMVIEW - Yeah, I'm not really sure with this one, since there's multiple versions with the same date.

And finally, for @fraggle here's the list of programs with source code apart from DEU, BSP and IDBSP:

  • The only DEU hacks that include source are ADE2 and HEUHACK1
  • BSP4OS2
  • Dehacked 3.0
  • DETH 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.5, 2.63, 4.24 - with minor fixes, 2.63 will successfully compile with Borland C++ 3.1
  • HETH 0.04 (derived from DETH 2.66)
  • DEUTEX 3.4, 4.4.0
  • Doom Hacker's Tool Kit 1.00 - DFE has a restrictive license, the rest is fine
  • DMAPEDIT 3.01 - restrictive license, I get weird linker errors with both Borland C++ 3.1 and 4.52
  • Intelli-Jumble 1.0.0
  • Geoff Allan's DoomED 2.60, 4.2 - 2.60 is password protected, 4.2 has a restrictive license. Going from memory, 4.2 needed a fix with either the REJECT or node building to compile, but I ended up just commenting out the code
  • GDR Doom Editor 1.0 and 1.1 - the 1.1 source code is broken and has strange dependencies on Borland libraries despite the binaries being compiled with Microsoft C++. I was able to successfully recompile after a few fixes. I haven't tried the 1.0 source code
  • JBSP 1.02
  • NodeNav 0.8, 0.81
  • NWT 1.3
  • Reject 1.0, MP, 1.1
  • WADGC
  • WadWhat 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 2.3
  • VNB 1.050
  • WARM 1.1, 1.3, 1.5, 1.6
  • WinDEU 5.23, 5.24
  • WinTex 3.4, 4.3
  • ZenNode 1.0 (and all subsequent versions)

As a little bonus, have this amusing ZIP file just showing how mangled 1-DEUII ended up passing through enough BBSes, including the text file referring to it as "DEU V".

Double post, but I wanted to keep this separate from piles of bullet points: the post

The first publicly released Doom mod that I'm aware of is DMSILLY.ZIP - a sound replacement pack using DMAUD to modify the IWAD that was released on January 6th. I have attached a clean ZIP, which is sourced from the OP of this thread. This upload has been a good source for clean files.

@Redneckerz really good work on what you've done overall, but I have a few things to comment on.

On 9/19/2023 at 7:16 PM, Redneckerz said:

HEX HACKER:

Included in the archive is HACK.EXE - Hex Hacker. As it turns out, Hex Hacker has had some history of its own:

  • The HACK.EXE from Doom Hockey is even earlier - December 12, 1993. This would mean this was released a mere two days after Doom's release, making it one of the earliest third party programs for Doom.

This grabbed my attention since it seemed a bit too coincidental and my initial thought is that it's some random public domain program, but sure enough taking a quick poke at HACK.EXE from HOCKEY10 with a hex viewer has an explicit reference to Doom and the DSG file extension. Amazing find. I'll see if the contents of DOOMHACK.ARJ exist somewhere.

On 9/19/2023 at 7:16 PM, Redneckerz said:

DOOM UTILITIES:

  • Sadly Bill Kirby didn't finish this through. The only released version 0.1 is merely a viewer. Like Dooze, it is very much built off the Unofficial Doom Specs.

This is not built off the Unofficial Doom Specs. DMAUD 0.2 and DSEDIT 1.0 are definitely not built off the Unofficial Doom Specs. There's also sufficiently good reason to believe that DTEDIT 1.0 is also not based off the Unofficial Doom Specs, as it was posted a few hours after the Unofficial Doom Specs was posted.

On 9/23/2023 at 11:07 PM, Redneckerz said:

Laura Beyer's Level Editor (LDLC):

Some of you may remember Laura Beyer's Doom - A infamous PWAD that was sold as a commercial addon with debateable quality maps. But there was also a level editor.

There's two versions of LBCREATE, and they're both reskins of Renegade Graphics DoomED - more specifically, the first version is based off some version between 1.1 and 2.11 (closer to 1.1 based on the UI and same shareware restriction), while the second version is based off some version between 2.11 and 2.23. Both are included in the RGDMED folder in the previous post.

Thanks for posting 3.5, 3.87, 4.14b and 4.16b! Do you happen to know what the sources were for 3.5 and 3.87, along with DEU 5.2? I'd like to see if ISO sources exist.

@deathz0rPost of the century, awesome. Seriously, if posts could have Cacowards, your string of posts would be it. For the sake of sanity i will only look at the parts you mentioned. Safe to say however that i am bowing down in your depth of your diggin':  I was already losing my mind researching the stuff shared here, but you go through a complete test cycle. Hats off, for sure.

HACK.EXE/Hex Hacker:

Hack.exe always piqued my interest because it did so much in such an early stage without being DeHacked - But as is now obvious, it is basically a custom HEX patcher for Doom. Very cool though.

  • I mentioned in this post Doom Cheat Patch - another program using HACK.EXE. Can you confirm if it has an explicit reference on Doom there?
  • It also mentions EFFECTS.PAT (June 15, 1994) - A patch that is written out in a Usenet post that supposely works on HACK.EXE. I couldn't get it to work however, even with a geniune Doom 1.2.exe, so i reckon it also needs a geniune Doom 1.2 IWAD file - All my Doom's are 1.9 and although i can degrade it, i had too little time for that. Perhaps you can try it?
  • I bow down for your thorough checking, because i didn't check with a Hex viewer - so didn't know that it was explicitly referencing Doom. I only figured it had something with Doom because it mentions it predominantly across the three executables i am so far aware of that used Hex Hacker for its patch.
  • Found later, but the original Megaguns (/idgames link here is a re-upped version by Simply Silly) patch also used HACK.EXE. I haven't found that one yet, but it is worth finding because well, it uses HACK.EXE. But it also uses DeHacked, making it the only (so far i can tell) patch that both uses HACK.EXE and DeHacked altogether. It isn't on a textfiles source, so i reckon this is on a archive.org disk. If anything it highlights that hacking Doom for sure didn't start at DeHacked.
SAVE Game Editors:
  • Like you, i am not terribly interested in Save game editors, but they are part of the early Doom history being one of the first things you could modifiy Doom with.
Doom Utilities/Bill Kirby
  • Well shoot, i clearly remember a post saying it rather explicitly that it was based off UDS.
  • In general there are various programs that (especially for their node routines) credit UDS. I think it would be good (atleast i will do that) to supplement the UDS wiki page with these programs that are directly inspired by it.

HEUHACK1:

I wasn't aware of this one and found it on the Cream 7 CD.

  • Not mentioned in your post (I don't blame you) but you also added in the various DEU hacks you know of. Super cool.
  • Found MDE (My Doom Editor) as version 1.0 (You linked 0.1) on Cream CD4. You also have that so
  • MAPMAKE.BAS. I can't tell if it is a joke post or not, but there used to be a QuickBasic editor by VortexCortex that could make WADS. Sure wish we had that...

That's it for now, i gotta have to look into the DEU Hacks. :)

You're welcome!

DEU 5.2 is here ( The Unsorted Collection, cd.textfiles.com). I found Deth 3.5 and 3.87 on two CDs, but due the presence of commercial/registered games I cannot share the link here. Anyway I can upload the file on archive.org. There are many Doom and Heretic files in there (wads, tools, utilities). In the past months I collected and downloaded a lot of Cds and a couple of BBS archives but I haven't had the time to upload them.

About the missing files/versions I found the following files:

DETH412B.RAR

JBSP102.RAR

NWT 1.0 is on Gold Medal Volume 5, but I could be wrong.

@deathz0rI will reply on your other post in the Archaeology later on, i just wanted to add in the following:

  • Given your extensive collection of all the programs, i feel now it is time that i am dropping out of the ''research bit on Usenet'' and start the next stage: Going through all the available docs and making sure this history is reflected on Wiki. @Nockson is being doing a terrific job filling in pages with software, but so far, they contain mostly release dates. So i want to fill this up with actual history, including author pages.
  • The collections released i want to add to /idgames. Instead of repackaging that, i want to take the folders from your collection and stick a standard /idgames template in there with explanation on what it is. Would you agree to this?
    • For DEU"hacks, i want to make seperate releases.
  • In terms of ''firsts/seconds/thirds'', i am looking at the editors which achieved node generation/building capability (after DEU) and before BSP and IDBSP routines became the choice of programmers to use as nodebuilders. DoomCAD is second (Version 4.0 beta released April 1, 1994, and has a seperate standalone port of its nodebuilder for DOS at version 4.3 (April 17, 1994) for speed-up reasons as NODEBLD.EXE, which was atleast used once in this capacity for a map), DMapEdit appears to be third after Jason Hoffos's shared his public routine on March 30 1994, but DMapEdit 2.0 released April 3, 1994, and WADED fourth (Version 0.99, May 3, 1994)  (Heavy emphasis on appears, i haven't checked anything else yet)
    • EDMAP is also interesting because from version 1.01 till 1.31, it used IDBSP: Version 1.0 till 1.24, and Version 1.1 till 1.31. Starting from 1.40, it used WARM 1.1.
    • WADED in particular is interesting because it does everything, including likely the nodebuilder, in Quickbasic. No wonder people thought it was slow!
      • Alistair Brown (CROSS.WAD) has had a lot of influence on these early editors: The node builder routine of WADED is almost fully based on his ideas (As opposed to being based off the UDS) and DMapEdit 2.1 sees a lot of feedback by Brown to improve Hoffos's node generation routine.
        • So in essence, although Raphael Quinet was one of the first with a node builder and inspired several hacks, Brown heavily inspired several early other editors with custom routines.

And from there, I was able to both find a significant number of clean sources and also found extra versions of programs along the way.

Here's the results, a lovely 102MB ZIP file!

https://www.mediafire.com/file/kq6ratc70psjkq6/doomedit.zip/file

I found some files that are not in the archive:

RGDE223S.ZIP

WADSTUD version 1.5a (WADSTD.ZIP)

DMVIEW11.ZIP.  DoomView 1.1 by Michael Swanson. It works only with Doom Shareware 1.0 and 1.1.

I hope these files can be useful to you.

I updated the zip archive in my previous post with two new files:

DVIEW (View.exe) by Jack Hill.  A BSP based rendering engine compatible with Id Software's WAD file and WAD files generated with DEU 5.2.

EDMAP_UP. A standalone patch to upgrade Edmap 1.2* to 1.22.

Anyway I can upload the file on archive.org.

Feel free to PM me a link - I'm mostly interested in making sure the file dates of the ZIPs are preserved, or feel free to throw it in Editors Updated.zip

About the missing files/versions I found the following files:

DETH412B.RAR

JBSP102.RAR

NWT 1.0 is on Gold Medal Volume 5, but I could be wrong.

Good finds on DETH and NWT! I haven't been searching ARJ or RAR files, so I should give Gold Medal 5 a proper look. JBSP 1.02 is already in the archive.

Already included as RGDMED.ZIP - that's the name that's used on /idgames.

I did find that one, but for some reason I had a brain fart and forgot to put it in, thanks for reminding me!

Sounds good to me - I'd say a rule of thumb is that if it's dated 1994 (especially early 1994) to verify with USENET posts, but that's up to you.

There's only two things that I really care about: Confirming if anything that has third-party FILE_ID.DIZ files has actual FILE_ID.DIZ files that would have been written by the author. A good example is DEEP - Jack's FILE_ID.DIZ files are overly verbose for their intention (~1800 bytes!) and you can frequently find copies that only have <300-byte FILE_ID.DIZ files which are properly formated for PCBoard. I've also seen the same for Dehacked 1.0 - a PCBoard formatted FILE_ID.DIZ is limited to 40 characters wide so it's spread out across more lines, while the correct copy is 80 characters wide.

The second thing is those BBS/shovelware CD headers when extracting with PKUNZIP, but I care about that one less. If you can strip out BBS junk from ZIP files without changing the file date of the ZIP, be my guest.

Curiously, it passes the E1M1 node rebuild test - I wonder if it's bugfixed code from DEU 5.0 beta 4 as that will error out with *** nodeline picked twice (this is a BUG!) *** with E1M1 - Geoff Allan's DoomED 2.50B and 2.50B3 are directly copied from DEU with the same error message.

I also just noticed that DOOMVB40.ZIP has a fair amount of BBS crap (three files!) which I somehow ignored - the only other copy of DoomCAD 4.0 that I'm aware of is on DB Tool #13 with only has a single BBS file, but it's unzipped. I've updated the hit list of clean ZIPs to find.

Finally, I've noticed that since I made the ZIP file with a case-sensitive filesystem that there's multiple copies of DEUTEX 3.3 and 3.6 and DoomCAD 3.0 - I'll do a re-upload sometime soon with @thestarrover's additions.

I uploaded on Google Drive the editors I found on the CDs and in my archive:

From my archive:

DME40BT4.ZIP and DME40BT7.ZIP

A clean copy, I think, of DOOMVB40.ZIP

deu2text.zip, a document concerning Adler's Deu II, more for its historical value than importance.

I took a quick look at the CDs and found these files

JUMBLE.ZIP Jumble v 1.01

JBSP101.ZIP Jbsp version 1.01

Some Versions of HETH.

I uploaded only the editors. I will upload the wads on archive.org when I can.

A note about JMBL102.ZIP included in your doomedit.zip.

Although the FILE.ID_DIZ states that the version is 1.02, Dosbox recognizes Jumble.exe as 2.00.

EDIT: some editors are included in the GAMES 1994 Cd

I will try to do my best to keep the zips as intact as possible - but removing the BBS junk. No idea how i should do that, but live and learn.

To speed the uploads, i am looking at how Funduke back in the day did it - aswell as Consigno's. For hacks, i would want to do seperate releases - but for things like the DEU and DCK collections, its better to do just one upload.

Till then ill link them on the wiki through either the direct DW link or ill put up a FTP link from my Redarchive since /idgames approvals take some time to get through (let alone write them)

I can make these uploads in this thread available on FTP if needed.

It is not the first time it happens. I always check the files with Kaspersky before uploading, but Google drive always find something wrong, in particular with the exe files.

Did you downloaded the files before google blocked them? In that case you can make them available of course.

Anyway I will try to reupload them.

EDIT: I tried but there's nothing to do. I surrender.

Nope, sadly wasn't able to catch it before it went haywire. Perhaps you can PM me and send it through a very temporary link so i can just link it to here from my FTP?

Google blocks the files almost immediately. To avoid any problems I will upload only the files I mentioned in the previous post that I have in my hard drive. We'll see about the others.

I never have issues with using MediaFire for uploads, should be worth a shot.

I uploaded the files on archive.org.

I added JBSP11X.ZIP (Jbsp version 1.1x)  found, unzipped, in PCMANIA CD #66. It is one of the few files that I did not include in the collection, since at the beginning of the "project" I was mainly focused on the wads.

Files tested with Kaspersky and Windows Defender

@thestarrover thank you so much for the excellent latest ZIP file from www.owlserver.de in your latest post.  Downloading it now. Finally got Boom v2.2! (Awful wad), Death4u, Bbnzplz3, Bbnzplz4 & Hellu100 plus a txt file for U_Talon. Didn’t know there was a level 32 in the u_talon.wad file. @Doomlover77

Appreciated!
I did take a side step and have now went on to scour /idgames on some missing stuff that might be worth finding:

  • This WAD (May 7, 1995) mentions a custom made node builder called BSP2DO by one David Jander being used with WADED 1.42.
  • This (May 20, 1994) and this (December 15, 1994) WAD mention the existence of Doom Construction Set 1.0, or DCS 1.0 by one Patrick Steele. It is notable because these wads are relatively early, but it doesn't have a node builder, citing BSP11X and BSP12X as being used to make the nodes. It credits DEU with re-using the find sector routine.
    • That editor apparently was never released, but it was used aswell for QUIKDETH (May 16, 1995) and QUIKDETH2 (August 9, 1995)
  • This WAD (April 1, 1994!) is just interesting because it uses DEU 5.0's node builder, but it uses DEU 4.3 (NewDEU 4.3) to correct the issues DEU 5.0's nodes make.
  • This search mentions TBSP. It is in one of the file collections here. It stands for TurboBSP. Version 2.2, September 9, 1994 - I found it in the RGDMED 2.85 distribution of February 22, 1995. It is derived from BSP12X. and DeepBSP is based off TBSP. It is by the same author, Jack Vermeulen.

Double post, but this (January 1, 2003, certainly not a correct date) wad mentions a ''DEU 5.10 HACK'' that was used for the node building. It also has a handy Node build chart detailing how long certain levels took to build. Seems that WADED and this DEU Hack were among the slowest.

Triple post, but this (October 10, 1994) WAD also mentions a DEU Hack and a file stamp: DM2EA.ZIP. Any of you @deathz0r@thestarrover can find that one? Apparently, the author (Ashley Gilliam) got direct feedback from no other than Jim Flynn. So perhaps its a custom edit? Seems that program was only used there but it has a zip mention, so it must be distributed somewhere..
