    Brazil Bans Doom

    Mordeth

The news agency Reuters reports that Brazil has banned six computer games from the stores, including Doom. Other games banned are Mortal Kombat, Requiem, Blood, Postal and Duke Nukem 3D. Duke Nukem 3D allegedly inspired a brazilian medical student to go on a shooting spree in a movie theater.

According to a spokeswoman of the brazilian ministery of Justice the violent content of those games might affect people, in particulary children. Plus, hey, banning games is easier to do than putting a stop to cocaine and gun trafficking.

Well, I'll never visit Brazil now... considering Doom and Mortal Kombat happen to be my all time favorite games. They can suck my big, harry American cock. You make a point, Ling... countries are getting pretty stupid when it comes to banning things. They ban the wrong things. Why not ban lame parents, or weaponry (as you state) or movies for Christ's sake? I think movies influence more than a video game does, since a game doesn't exactly "praise" the character you are playing, but in movies you see an audience's reaction to a violent scene, and that reaction is what most sick bastards crave.

Kind of hypocritical for a country who allows street kids to be gunned down by police "death squads", often at the request of the rich, to do this don't you think?. I beleive there are some reforms taking place, and the gov't over there is comming down on officers who do this, but there is still a hell of alot of corruption over there. Before they ban games, why don't they ban their own violence first? --balanco00@my-deja.com

I just went over and read the full story. Apparently, 3d Realms designed both Duke 3d, and Doom :). They also got the name of Carmagaddon wrong. Our accurate and trustworthy media at work.... --balanco00@my-deja.com

I bet now that they're banned, Brazillian kids will be desperate to get their hands on them. Just like when Carmageddon came out it was sold with "The game they tried to ban!!" in their adds.

Besides, you can still download the shareware/demo versions of those games straight from the net - unless that is banned as well...

Blood was made by Monolith Productions not GT, GT published the game, they didn't make it.

If they try to bust into our house, they're not getting my Doom II box, that's for sure! I'm gaurding it with my life!!! Oh well. Well, let us all pray this goes no further..

Brazilians don't agree with that kind of attitude from our politicians , we know ,as John Carmack said once in a interview for a Brazilian game magazine, that the violence inside the game will only affect people that is crazy already. But the are a lot o people that still play and love Doom , and if they don't let us buy it we can always get a copy from a friend...

It is also a lot less expensive.
I bet the underlying reason is because the corrupt
Brazilian government wants to boost there sale of
    boot leg games. nuff said

Well, I wonder what they'll blame the violence on after the computer games are all banned...

After the games are banned, they'll blame television, movies, and music. Then, books. Then, finally, when the public is too ignorant to know what violence is, it will stop. Unless it doesn't.

Hey, the world will not went down only because some games were banned out of stores in Brazil. Over here in Germany DooM and all the other violent games were banned out of stores several years ago. But you can still buy them if you are older than 18 years. "banning games is easier to do than putting a stop to (cocaine and gun) trafficking" What about the USA? they are doing neither ban games nor make it harder to get weapons! I don't know exactly how it is in other (european) countrys, but in Germany you can't but weapons in every second shop. It even takes a long time to get a weapon license, and nearly nobody is allowed to get one at all.

ENOUGH ALREADY! Strong and clear and true - I am not a doctor of any degree, however, I am not an idiot, either. Three Points: 1.) When our remarkable son was about 10 years old and was listening to a type of music, which to this day, makes my blood run cold, and his cousins also were enjoying the same music, we posed a question to him. How was it, when all the children in our families were being raised the same way, and listening to the same music, that only he abstained from gang life and trouble and all the others were not? At this time, all the 'learned adults' blamed that music. So, I asked our son, why not you? His response: "While some things can influence you, your choice is still your choice." THAT burned in my heart forever! 2.) When I was a young girl, I played Cowboys and Indians with my brothers and sisters and I am not out there shooting people today. 3.)Quit balming the games for destruction! Truth is Duke has monsters in it, that give me nightmares, so guess what? I DO NOT PLAY WITH THOSE ALIENS, Donkey Kong keeps me satisfied. Thank you very much. As a responsible adult and parent, I was obligated to check out the games. I did. People, the truth is that YES, we should ban certain things, because some money hungery folks will sell ANYTHING! Those things should be: Anything Satanic, Pornographic or Anti GOD/COUNTRY/FAMILY. People will always find something to blame their sick behavior on, because they can't face the truth inside that tells them they have unresolved emotional issues. AND PARENTS - please!!!!! You know if your little Johnny is a bit touched, and can't tell the difference between reality and a game, in which case the Roadrunner would be a hazard to them - so please, be honest with yourself and get some help! Oh, and for the record, I have a brother who was murdered in cold blood by people he thought were his friends - and guess what? They didn't play Duke or Doom. Peace everyone - make your own decisions, and let me make mine. A Freedom loving Mom, who does not work for ID Software or 3D Realms, Ruth Noyes P.S. I know there are demons in Doom, but you fight those guys, and that's what we should do in real life.

I agree with AndrewB, I would absolutely hide my cd, or make a backup copy.

I also agree with Balanco, on all points.
BTW, You also got the name of Carmageddon wrong... :P

Hold on here, I thought Brazil had already banned these games. I mean, we knew long ago that games like Grand Theft Auto were Banned in Brazil. This should be old news. Besides, all this crap about entertainment media (movies, games, music, etc...) is just that, crap. Hell, I heard that they banned any reference to shirukens (ninja throwing stars) in Great Britain, since some nut saw too many bad kung-fu movies, got a crapload of throwing stars, and just started huckin' them at people. Ouch. They had to make a special British patch for 3D Realm's "Shadow Warrior" to change the shiruken weapon into darts. What the hell gives? It's STUPID!!!! Pardon the rant, just testing out the brand new P3 500 w/ DSL connection, and I'm feelin' kinda giddy. (This is SOOO much better than a P 100 w/ 28.8 analog modem!) ~DP
