princetontiger Posted November 21, 2012 Would you guys say 20,000 or so known wads exist across doom/doom2/final doom? But maybe only 5% of them... or 1000 of them are good? I see in the idgames query string about 17000, but let's say maybe 3000 or so WADs aren't in idgames but are floating around on maximum doom, d! zone, etc. 0 Share this post Link to post
General Rainbow Bacon Posted November 21, 2012 Why does this matter? Just play the ones you like. I'll humor you though. I'd say there are about that number, however probably more than half are decent, and the more important thing is that 80 - 90% of them are fun. Your 5% is probably how many are really really good. 0 Share this post Link to post
Phml Posted November 21, 2012 Depends on how you define "known". A significant amount of wads posted on this forum never end up on idgames, for example. Then there's localized websites - many countries have their own Doom community, and their own modding scene. I'd guess there are at least as many public wads out of /idgames as there are in /idgames. Not that I have any evidence or even a calculated estimation, just a gut feeling. 0 Share this post Link to post
Reisal Posted November 21, 2012 You are forgetting stuff other than Doom levels are being uploaded to/have been to /idgames/, such as the official source code, front ends, utilities, demos, etc. 0 Share this post Link to post
Death Egg Posted November 21, 2012 This isn't even including private WAD's, unfinished WAD's, cancelled WAD's, unreleased WAD's, etc. 0 Share this post Link to post
Unholypimpin Posted November 22, 2012 id guesstimate around 8000 great wads and 999999 wads that noone cares about. 0 Share this post Link to post
schwerpunk Posted November 22, 2012 So many that one person would likely be unable to get through even just the fun ones. 0 Share this post Link to post
GreyGhost Posted November 23, 2012 I know of about 20,000.princetontiger said:I see in the idgames query string about 17000, but let's say maybe 3000 or so WADs aren't in idgames but are floating around on maximum doom, d! zone, etc. There's around 14,500 wads in the archive and I'd previously guesstimated the number of released wads (including Doom<>Doom2<>Heretic conversions, updates, modified IWAD maps, wadpaks of other peoples work and etc.) to be maybe 30,000. That figure's probably a bit low. 0 Share this post Link to post
Enjay Posted November 23, 2012 Define "WADs". There are hundreds, nay thousands, of small WADs that are parts of tutorials or examples etc. These might not really be playable maps (or other types of mods) but they are WADs and many of them are known about. Do PK3s count? 0 Share this post Link to post
TimeOfDeath Posted November 23, 2012 A while ago someone posted the amount of wads uploaded to /idgames separated by year, but I can't find the thread. Does anyone know how to do that? 0 Share this post Link to post
GreyGhost Posted November 24, 2012 That sounds like one of mine or Hellbent's. I'm sure there's a more recent list but can't recall the thread right now, might cheat and generate a new one. 0 Share this post Link to post
TimeOfDeath Posted November 24, 2012 Yeah thanks, yours looks like what I was thinking of, but I didn't realize it was 3 years ago. Please cheat. :) 0 Share this post Link to post
GreyGhost Posted November 24, 2012 Here you go, if Enjay asks nicely I might add PK3s to the list. There's also a few tucked away inside executables that my file manager doesn't pick up.Year Wads Size (kB) 1994 2105 228 1995 2983 308 1996 2164 457 1997 865 767 1998 671 740 1999 488 922 2000 448 1175 2001 379 1037 2002 327 1286 2003 445 1408 2004 581 2229 2005 470 1904 2006 439 2763 2007 338 2996 2008 309 4773 2009 326 5007 2010 316 3784 2011 272 5243 2012 260 10522 (as of 22 Nov) Other 155 (invalid datestamps)Since the data is sitting in a spreadsheet I decided to calculate the average uncompressed filesize by year, which might help explain the decline in uploads. ;-) 0 Share this post Link to post
TimeOfDeath Posted November 24, 2012 Cool, thanks. :) For 94-96, at least half of those wads are for deathmatch, right? 0 Share this post Link to post
The Monitor Posted November 24, 2012 I'd say 20,000 - 50,000. I only really know for sure of about 2500, and I have about 1000 of those on my computer. 0 Share this post Link to post
