Long story about the lack of empathy of JBDC.

None of you made the Civvie11 jokes, though I'm liking these "Rude Carmack" memes.

Maybe you can research John Carmack accomplishments like make something new or something that already exist yet still unoptimized so he make the genre popular and accessible by everyone.

He made possible to have fast multi-player and grafics at the same time with a new algorithm.

Carmack masterminded the ultimate Computer Virus, Doom. He and Romero single handily destroyed the security of the Computer Networks throughout the World, using their viral video games as a covert weapon to penetrate sensitive systems, where legions of government employees would spend hours playing the game on insecure networks. This enslaved demonic network of computers became known as the 'Putah, the big Matrix in the Sky, the connection machine of Pie. Ever needing to bump up the ante of consumer hardware was a necessity so the Duo, along with Trent Reznor, could connect their brains directly to the machines and control all aspects of life (but Trent later went on to help found Google as a silent partner).

I'm sorry. I couldn't resist.

Did not know those threads even existed, but I'm not gonna frame my need for help as a contest.

True. You are instead framing it as plea to the work for you.

Atleast framing it as a contest sounds ridiculous enough that some mapper may snicker an effort in. This? Hell naw.

Despite what it may look like, I did do some research. I was just asking what else I could add besides "yeh he made sum c0ol engins"

''He did some engines'' is the equivalent of you doing research?

Try Carmack's .plan's. Heck, even mentioning that already scores more than ''He did some engines''.

PS:

Since you were awesome enough to share your presentation, i took a look at it.

  • You make very basic points about Carmack's carreer but aren't elaborating them.
  • You do make a good case of using Powerpoint as a tool and not as something i can read from during the actual presentation lol. Too many folks fall for that one. A Powerpoint slide is a supplement to what you are saying. If the slide contains the entire text that you are going to read from, you are doing it wrong, as everyone can read a slide.

YES! THAT'S WHAT I'M LOOKING TO FIX! How can/should I fix that?

I was already sort of aware of that, but the teacher made sure to remind us.

Please don't. That quote is used out of context so much that there's no longer anything funny about it. To be honest, it was never that funny to begin with. The whole "pornos have shitty plotlines" thing has been beat to death.

Spoiler

I used to be into S&M, beastiality, and necrophilia, but eventually I realized I was just beating a dead horse.

@jmpt16 I'm genuinely curious, what kind of class is this for? Are you in college or high school? Is it for a technical class of some kind, or perhaps a public speaking class, or... what? Because it might reveal more about how detailed you should get, and what types of details you should include, if we knew your audience and the academic context.

At risk of being completely shat on, I'm in college for game development, and the specific class is "Video Game Industry". Hence why I wanted more details than his engine-making prowess, and hence also why I added stuff like "copies sold" to the details in the powerpoint.

Tbf I doubt my class knows that quote, so it is less worn out.

10/10 joke btw

Then dive into as deep of technical detail on Carmack's engines as you can in your allotted 15 minutes, and also expand upon how they've impacted the industry by powering other games and being forked into other engines (i.e. the Quake engine went on to power Half-Life and other games). You want to talk about Carmack's contributions to the gaming industry, you talk about that and how his tech helped spawn countless other titles and set technical trends within games. You could quite easily fill a 15 minute presentation on that alone. That's the approach I would take anyway.

Also, if your instructor makes it a habit (as many do) of recording your presentation, then please do us all a solid and see that you post the recording of it here. I think as contributors to your project, we deserve to see the fruits of y(our) labor.

Ironically, that was somewhat the original plan (you can see me setting that bit up in the powerpoint)

I don't think that will be the case. Will post a youtube vid for the people of this thread, if for no other reason than to confirm the length of my presentation.

I need to put sources, so at least a "thank you" is in the plan.

I mean, isn't your presentation about Carmack's contributions to the gaming industry? What were you going to talk about in lieu of those topics? His love of cheap pizza? His Ferrari collection?

No, obviously that is and always was what I'm going to talk about. I just wanted to know what else he (directly) contributed to games beyond his engine tech. You know, design-wise and all that (hence closing with the porn quote)

1. Carmack didn't work primarily in design, and id's games would not exist were it not for the talented and enthusiastic people he had working with him.

2. Although not insignificant, Carmack was more the person who gave guidelines about technical limitations and the *general* design direction id's games took.

3. You don't need to delve into that for a 10-15 minute presentation.

I'm aware that I'm helping you more than I probably should be here, but I've actually grown curious to see how this turns out. When you post the video, will your presentation be in English?

Adding onto what other people have said, Carmack has worked in the VR field and currently works in artificial intelligence now, so I think that may be a viable thing to add to the presentation. More so as a follow-up to his contributions in the gaming industry, or an example to show that skills learned in the game industry can be brought over to other things within the technological/digital realm. I don't know what he contributed to VR and AI, but that's something that may be worth researching and/or presenting.

It's pretty much finished though so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Teacher said it was excellent, one of the best on the topic (of games industry people) he'd ever seen.

I am not joking.
