Everyone here attempting to compare engines talking about the specularity of a shader is clueless.

Music/Media Players- what should I use?
Zaldron replied to Prince of Darkness's topic in Everything Else
foobar and global hotkeys. Music just comes out of the speakers, all I ever wanted. -

Day after day I pray for all forums to make "Age" an accurate and mandatory piece of info. Preferably below avatars, in 25pt font. It would explain many things. -
It's just an idea. Don't buy them: idea fails; everything goes back to normal. Acting like a potential customer rather than a sperglord sure makes these things easier.

What's the scariest thing you've ever seen? [bump]
Zaldron replied to Kaylomaster's topic in Everything Else
The best hallucinations are those that completely overwhelm what you're seeing without actually changing the details in your field of vision... It's hard to explain, but I once hallucinated being on top of a train's passenger wagon, looking into a mellowing orange sunset surrounded by gorgeous purple clouds. Once I broke free, I realized I was just looking at that particular's room decoration and scattered objects from an odd angle. There was no fading, nothing was lost in a swirl of smoke or gradually became transparent, I was just looking at things wrong, the way you may, bored out of your mind, look at the creases of your pillow and image they're canyons in an alien planet. -
I call it the 'Tree-house Club Syndrome'. Everyone worries about finding like-minded individuals instead of bearing the weight their ideals/opinions (let alone apply the scientific method to them). It's not US-centric by any means but the two-party system has a way of qualifying every assertion as black/white, good/evil depending on which side of the fence you are simply because there's no tangible third side to break this image I have of 12 year olds up in their tree-house plotting against the kids next door with a passion.

Linux was a mysterious thing back when we were playing DOS games and using the non-NT Windows branch. I became a decent enough linux "power user" in six months coding for it. There's nothing there you can't do in Windows, and every grievance is stashed one Google search away, just like any regular Windows inquiry. Seriously, there's nothing fancy in it. The CLI is far better, but nothing you can't get with Powershell, coreutils or Perl/Python scripts, the filesystem is odd at first but not intrinsically better or worse, the GUIs mostly suck in comparison to the refined approaches of other companies, but they're not dysfunctional by any means, packages make it easy to add shit, probably much easier than installing stuff in Windows, and if you stick to Ubuntu or similar chances are it'll be smooth sailing, or just a patch away from compilation. Compiling, by the way, is not an arcane art: if configure/make fail horribly chances are you didn't follow the instructions or the code is too damn large/complex for you to tinker away till it works, even if you're an experienced coder. Drivers used to be hell but it mostly works now, and if you run it in a VM that's not something to worry about. Go for it, can't be afraid of software. Of course you'll never compare to the admins with ten, twenty more years than you using it, but a mid-high level of understanding is not hard to obtain. Don't confuse command-line voodoo for actual know-how, most of that shit can be perfectly accessed via the GUI, while the real everyday "magic" of Linux resides in its powerful set of tools to automate/script complex tasks. Something that goes pretty much untouched unless you plan to get work/study done with it. If not, it has nothing to offer you.

Millionaire gives away fortune which made him miserable
Zaldron replied to Hellbent's topic in Everything Else
He wants to live a simple life, not become a philanthropist. What you're suggesting is for him to keep being aggravated with monetary concerns by trying to push the organisation forward. -
This is probably the cornerstone of his failure; this could be a spiritual successor to System Shock, Dungeon Keeper or a 3D Dwarf Fortress. As an oldschool FPS, it could be highly experimental in its level design the way The Void currently is or Unreal was in its time. It could be more about exploration and puzzle-solving like The Dig or, to use 3D examples, the Penumbra series, Pathologic or Amnesia. Even if you found people willing to pay for what essentially plays as a Doom TC in 2010, why would anyone fund this?

The telltale sign of this bygone era is the Gouraud shading, rather than the blurry textures. Use gradients and "indexed" textures using a completely inappropriate palette.
