Total conversion map to make Freedoom Like Doom 1993 ???

Recommended Posts

yeah, it's called The Ultimate Doom. The authors want a bit of money though, it took them a lot of work.

I don't think English is OP's first language. I THINK they might be trying to ask if it's possible to play Doom 1 using Freedoom, maybe? Just a guess.

Even then that defeats the point of freedoom, since the levels aren't free. Either OP wants something that's basically piracy, or something so weird that I can't decipher.

My working theory is they want to use Freedoom like an IWAD and play Doom 1 levels with it since you can use Freedoom to play other PWADs.

Well, in that case it would be as simple as loading doom.wad after freedoom, either via a loader like ZDL or a batch file. Tough that would raise the "issue" of most (if not all) assets being turned back into UDoom's.

Imagine speaking English so bad, people have to make theories to decipher even the fraction of what you were trying to say

i think they meant loading the freedoom maps on top of doom 1/2 while keeping everything else as their doom equivalents

A Freed∞m equivalent of this would be a cool thing to have too!

I think so too, and I am for this iwad to be expandable from the very beginning, so that any modder can make his own iwad based on it.
But still, the monsters need to be re-drawn in the doom style so that there are no problems with the copyright holder.

I'm not sure what you meant by this?

I wanted to write that a developer cannot just take something ready-made from Freedoom, because this is not the same style and spirit. But if he continues to use the original sprites, then the copyright holder will have the right to prohibit the distribution of this. It would be great if they were similar to the original ones, but drawn independently.

Freed∞m is a libre data set for the Doom engine. It is perfectly possible to strip down the Phase 1 IWAD to shareware-only assets (as was the case with "demo" releases in older versions like v0.7), and then edit or replace maps and reduce the number of textures and sound effects used, like what @fraggle did, and compress the IWAD with WADPrt so that it and the FastDoom binary fit on a single floppy. The art however absolutely does not have to be in the same style as Doom or anything else. You only need libre-licensed maps that will have simple enough geometry and use a limited set of textures for this to work.

In fact, I think there have been several competitions or mapping jams with limited pools of textures. If there are maps for The Ultimate Doom and any of the authors released them with permissions to incorporate in other projects, I believe those could be used for a floppy-sized Freed∞m edition.
