Why does doomguys' armor expose his stomach?
TheUltimateDoomer666 replied to invictius's topic in Doom General
What about the demons in this magazine cover art (which was done by the same artist who did the game's cover)? Although their upper body does look like that of the Baron, they seem to have clawed imp-like feet. -
Best soundfont for non-iwad midis?
TheUltimateDoomer666 replied to invictius's topic in Doom General
"Heavy_guitar_collection.sf2" is about 23 MB and contains only an overdriven guitar and a distortion guitar. I haven't really tested how it sounds with MIDI files. There are very few, if any, soundfonts that have electric guitars that are both powerful/realistic and suitable for General MIDI. -
Best soundfont for non-iwad midis?
TheUltimateDoomer666 replied to invictius's topic in Doom General
I use Arachno, or the 4 MB EYE & I Productions soundfont, or the Yamaha S-YXG50 VST MIDI Synth for MIDIs that need balance and would sound strange on big/"realistic" soundfonts. SONiVOX 24 MB GS soundfont might also be suitable, though a small few of the instruments in it seem to be an octave too high. The SONiVOX 250 MB GS soundfont on the other hand is pretty horribly balanced. Still, the MS GS SW Synth should have the "perfect" balance since it's based on the Roland SC-55. The samples are poorer quality and it lacks reverb, but at least it's listenable. A soundfont 2 version exists of it, scc1t2.sf2, which can be used with something like CoolSoft VirtualMIDISynth to have reverb. -
DOS executables and IWADs are stored in folders named "DOOM", "DOOM2", "PLUTONIA", and "TNT" in C:\DOS. Most PWADs are stored in C:\DOS\WADS. Source ports and mods are located all over the place.

20th Anniversary of the PS1.
TheUltimateDoomer666 replied to Superluigieth1's topic in Everything Else
Didn't get a PS1 until quite some time after it was released. I still have one sitting around. The first games I played on it were DOOM, and Duke Nukem: Time To Kill and Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes. I also played Independence Day a bit, even though that was a pretty bad game... I recently played through PS1 Final DOOM. -
Community Questionnaire (idea shamelessly stolen from HeX)
TheUltimateDoomer666 replied to Doomkid's topic in Everything Else
What is your username and what does it mean? TheUltimateDoomer666. Just a generic name. I originally used "The Ultimate Doomer" on some sites, but then removed spaces and added a 666. What was the first doom you ever played? Doom. What was the first (unofficial) source port you ever played and when? Doomsday Engine. Can't remember exactly when I first played it; some number of years ago. What was the first (unofficial) pwad you ever played and when? One of the Master Levels for DOOM 2... But first unofficial PWAD I played was UAC_DEAD, again can't remember exactly when. What is your favorite game mode? Singeplayer. And Deathmatch. If you are in a clan, what clan and why are you in it? What is your fondest memory of multiplayer Doom? "Camping" around the areas with the rocket launcher and soul sphere in E1M2. -
Some other games such as Bio Menace and Duke Nukem 2 also require a certain FILE_ID.DIZ to work. As far as I know, Monster Bash is the only game in the Anthology that doesn't work properly. Part of the freeware license for Bio Menace says: So they need to add the correct FILE_ID.DIZ to Monster Bash. There is actually a FILE_ID.DIZ file already included with that release of Monster Bash, but it's only a description of the Shareware version and thus doesn't work with Parts 2 and 3.
-
According to their FAQ, they do. However, on Steam, Wolfenstein 3D is published entirely by id Software.
-
The freeware games are still freeware; you can download them when you create a 3D Realms account. However, those games are still included in the Anthology anyway. The DOS games all run in DOSBox. The Anthology pack currently has a few issues...some of the games are old versions. Some hint sheet files are missing. Some have random save files and high scores; the games have been released without them cleaning up the stuff left by previous players. Also, Monster Bash is broken. The first Part is the old Shareware version with the nag screens, and Parts 2 and 3 cannot be played past the first level due to a missing FILE_ID.DIZ file. These issues will hopefully be fixed later, though they really should have tested the stuff before release.

So...while browsing the Turok Wiki, I came across some information on a classic-style FPS that is apparently being made by a small indie team. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1960229088/the-dinosaur-hunter-classic-fps Anyway, there doesn't appear to be any gameplay or screenshots of it yet, just renders of models. There's a "video" on the page with the author describing the project, and he talks about his feelings on the "classic style" of FPS games. He says the game will be inspired by classics like DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, and the Turok games. In my opinion, they made the Kickstarter a little early...they could have released some actual gameplay videos and screenshots first. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think a small team would actually be able to make a good classic-style FPS like this? I don't know how similar it's going to be to DOOM/Turok in terms of gameplay and level design, if its funding manages to be successful...

Things about Doom you just found out
TheUltimateDoomer666 replied to Sigvatr's topic in Doom General
Meh...it still sounds weird to me. I guess because I'm used to playing for so long without pitch shifting. When I first played a modern console port with pitch shifting, I thought there was something wrong with the sound. The monsters occasionally sounded like they were on helium or something. I just don't like the pitch shifting. -
I posted a topic months ago about the appearance of the various DOOM model addon packs that are available. I now decided to screenshot every monster ingame, using both the "revised standard models" and "revised Sitters and Abbs enhanced models", plus a few other models. I used the same camera angle for each standard + enhanced comparison. These images probably aren't really that useful, but I just thought it would be interesting to see how the modelers' interpretations of the sprites differ. As I said before, however, I prefer the sprites...some of these models are really awful. Monster model packs comparison
TheUltimateDoomer666 replied to TheUltimateDoomer666's topic in Doom General
There are many more weapon models than monster models available for DOOM, since they're generally quicker to make and animate I would assume. There are the ones from the jDOOM resource pack, which have been occasionally edited and updated. Then there are the Risen3D addons which have different weapon models. The packs for Vavoom and Skulltag also each have different models of the weapons. The Vavoom ones are the worst in my opinion.
