  1. 1. Some people don't call doomguy "doomguy," so let's see everyone else's opinion.

    • DoomGuy (Romero)
    • Doom Slayer (2016)
    • Our Hero (1994)
    • Unnamed Space Marine (1993)
    • Doom Marine (1993)
    • John Kane (Book)

    • Flynn Taggart (Book)
    • BJ Blazkowicz III (Plot)

it's always been interesting to me that the Quake 1 protagonist originally had no name just like Doom's protagonist, but Quake 3 called him Ranger and everyone retroactively accepted that.  but Quake 3 also calls Doom's protagonist just "Doom" and that never latched on.  I like that idea personally, like Doom is his call-sign and the game is named after him (it also fits with the Chinese translation, where the game and protagonist are both called "Extermination Warrior")

but when it comes to his "real name," in the Doom 2 RPG he's called Stan Blazkowicz rather than BJ the Third, and I like that because it confirms him as a Blazkowicz but also sets him apart from BJ.  so, to me, he's "Stan Blazkowicz, codename Doom."  buuut I still usually just call him Doomguy for simplicity's sake lol

I think when I have wanted to refer to the fellow as an individual in his own right, I have simply used Doomguy.
That said I have recently found Our Hero to fit well when writing DWIronman obituraties.
The wiki gives an option missing from the poll: Doom's Protagonist. But I find that rather a mouthful.

I have a vague recollection of, before Ranger, some people calling him "Skippy" back in the day, presumably joking on bunny hopping and/or the effects of lag in DM.

I always liked the idea that Doomguy/the player character is supposed to be you. It's "You have entered deeply into the heart of the infested starport," not "Doomguy has entered deeply into the heart of the infested starport."

It's the interpretation that makes the most sense. They wanted Doom to be immersive, so they made the main character you and put you in the "driver's seat" (first person view.) Of course, there is an issue if you aren't actually a guy, but I digress.

WHERE TF IS JOAN DARK ISTG

You are joking, right? It's sad that they have yet to make a plot accurate movie.

Yes, I was joking. That being said, I preferred Doom Annihilation to the 2005 movie, personally. That's not to say they're not both trainwrecks; they are.

"You".

It's how he's called in the game and manual. It's kind of a weird name, but maybe it's short for "Eugene" or something. :p

Reginald P. Watson the Third, esquire.

But seriously, id was clear from this from day one. It's a self-insert character. He is you. I sometimes use Doomguy in discussions for the sake of streamlining, but that's a fan made nickname and has never been used in any lore.

I used to call him Doomguy mainly, but these days I've for some reason more called him the Doom Marine. Not sure why. Either one though I use.

I will say though, I will forever hate the fact that they canonized "Doomguy" as an actual title for him in Eternal. I'm sorry but even for that game that's just too dumb.

When talking about him I call him Doomguy. When playing the IWADs in GZDoom I change the player name to Flynn Taggart.

Who in the fucking hell would take the time to pronounce BJ Blazkowicz III??

I would

...sorry

I think it's kind of cool to feature him in the blazkowicz bloodline. I think the name is better than Flynn taggart.

I don't see Doomguy as a character. The text screens say 'you' as in the player.

Doomguy is you. He don't need a backstory, since it's easier to immerse yourself in the game without that. This was something Doom 3 clearly understood, and something I strongly dislike in the new games that went the character route with the cringey edgelord "Rip and tear" crap.

I still tend to think of Doomguy as a character, but I agree with this part.  the new Dooms may be better video games, but Doom 3's protagonist was a better attempt at redoing Doom's protagonist, having him as simply a single marine in a terrible situation rather than some mythical hero with super armor.
