It work without problem on Chocolate, but crash vanilla for some reason :S

That's the one main discrepancy between Chocolate and Vanilla behavior: MIDI and MUS behavior. This is why one should always test their MIDIs in DOSBox if they're aiming for vanilla-compatibility.

but the midi works without problem as no one is beyond the limit :/
And the crash has nothing to do with the midi, its searching for a graphic, in this case the minus symbol on the status bar, and i didn't even touch it or replace it, so as it is a vanilla pwad, with no replacement aside from TITLEPIC, ENDPIC, and INTERPIC, and the CWILV patches, it shouldn't be breaking :/
Thats why i'm asking for help.

I would like to ask a question out of curiosity: has the original Kansam9.wad been removed from the archive due copyright issues or, simply, due annoying sounds/fx as stated in kansamse.txt?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hmm, I'm not actually sure - I can't find the original Kansam9 anywhere now, though..

Will be updating all mentioned files!

@P41R47 Converting all the MIDIs to MUS did the trick. Here's a vanilla-compat pack that has it all! I might use this for the BVWP if it's alright with you, everything works perfectly now. You could just include "DMONMIDI.wad" in your existing midi pack, maybe even rename it to DMONMUS.wad, just so vanilla players can enjoy it.

Anyway, here it is: DMONFEAR.zip

ahhhh man!
I can't believe it!

didn't the original exe supposed to support midis?

Thanks for your time and for helping me with this, pal!
;)
what program did you use to convert to mus?

i have one called midi3mus that kinda works on win, and kinda not.

Its a sentient thing.

I used Midi3Mus! Just dragged all the MIDIs out of the wad, and placed them one-by-one on Midi3Mus, once each one was converted slapped them back into the wad, and all seemed to work well. 99% of the time MIDI files do work in vanilla, but once in a blue moon something causes trouble..

Is it too late to say that the vanilla version of my Confinement 256 mapset (now on /idgames) had a slight update from the .WAD file in this pack? I would like the the CONF256V wad here to get an update as well! c:

Thanks for elaborating on this @Doomkid. I've reread KANSAMSE.TXT more attentively and get your point now. It's curious that original version used a tool PINO.EXE to patch level names into DOOM2.EXE, but this has been scrapped by the time the SE version was released. How many level name patching tools did one need back in the days!

Indirectly, thank you for mentioning this! I am actually keeping a list of early WADS that did something unusual with the exe or with the release package, and the existence of PINO.EXE is thus interesting for the wikipage on Kansam's Trial.

If you know more curious cases, let me know.

Quote

2. Do you still have trouble with D2XTREME and D2XGOLD? I think I figured out the problem was with level names and intermission text and changed those slightly for both, so both mods run with v1.9 Doom II. Again will gladly share if there's interest.

Useless trivia:

  • D2XTREME/D2XGOLD both make use of an engine, called Doom2X. In practice, it was just a extensive DeHacked patch, in the vein of the Blessed Engine. D2XTREME.EXE and D2XGOLD.EXE (And Ultra Doom2X, UD2X.EXE) are just Doom2.exe executables with the DeHacked patch already applied/merged, but they don't run easily in a source port because of all the changes made. These executables were modified enough to serve as some kind of pseudo-port till the release of the Doom source code in 1997.
  • Ultra Doom2X was the first to feature the Doom2X engine.
  • Release dates of these executables highlight the evolution of said engine:
    • UD2X.EXE: May 15, 1996 (Reports in-game as ''ULTRA DOOM2X (Doom2x vers. 1.3 running off DOOM 2: Hell On Earth'')
    • D2XTREME.EXE: August 12, 1996 (Reports in-game as ''DOOM2-XTREME (Doom2x vers. 1.5) running off DOOM 2: Hell On Earth'')
    • D2XGOLD.EXE: May 17, 1997 (Reports in-game as ''DOOM2X-TREME GOLD (Doom2X v.1.69) running off of DOOM 2: Hell On Earth'')

Perhaps this is useful to someone. @Doomkid, perhaps?

Maybe I will go through and find each wad that requires inflation at some point and put them all in their own dirs with a copy of DEUSF..

Had an opportunity to apply this method to the wads in my local copy of v8 (I've been organizing and moving things around) that only had a readme (at best) in addition to the .wad file itself, and checked how those of them which did not have a DEHACKED lump, but had sprites or flats indices, would load into vanilla Doom. Sharing the results with you.

1. Had issues but was able to load successfully after inflation:

- THEGATE (...and Blood Pools)

- BELLTOLL

2. Was unable to launch with vanilla Doom 2 1.9, deusf or not, for various reasons:

- LUNAAI (this onee did have separate .DEH patch though)

- SOFTFX

- CRMSN37

- CHURCH (...of RNGsus)

3. Figured out from the readme inflation was required:

- REBIRTH1

With the above, my assumption was that if one shipped a wad with DEHACKED embedded only, then that wad had never been intended for vanilla in the first place... Speaking of which, I was browsing through .DEH patches (those in individual wad folders) the other day and was surprised to see considerable number of files using BEX extensions.

Somehing that comes to mind are ZOMBIES and a Christmas WAD called xd1. Also original readmes for Alient TC and Alien Vendetta mentioned installers but I'm not sure if these are available. Then come the well documented (at least I would expect them to be) Strain, Eternal, CLEIM10 and The Sky Maybe. Finally Invasion (both Doom and Doom 2 wads) had a launcher (not installer), but it did not strike me as anything outstanding.

The installer (and uninstaller) for Alien TC , ALIENS.EXE, is available in the original first version for doom 1.2 -1.666 (ALIEN-TC.ZIP). Later versions come with a new installation by Olivier Montanuy.

Edited by thestarrover : added ALIEN-TC.ZIP for the first release

If you have an older revision of the wad pack and would like to see what's been added since, compare the current !WADLIST.TXT to the one in your pack using Text-Compare.com or a similar service.

I hope you all enjoy these new additions, and this is only an "interim release" - There are a handful of issues and oddities that @ludicrous_peridot has pointed out that I'll have cleaned up/sorted out for next release, as well as adding a handful of new releases that will surely please (Such as the TNT Midi Pack and other MIDI packs that aren't yet present, and new sets like Zone 400).

I also want to thank everyone who has posted in this thread and contributed to this pack - another thing I might add next time around is an additional part of the TXT file thanking everyone who has participated in the thread and made suggestions, or otherwise helped out.

Enjoy!!

hey, my thing's in here!

Also 1000 Lines Community Project 2, that's a pretty good WAD I would say. Downloading right away.

Two days later and you would have been able to include the TNT MIDI pack as well.

Yeah, I did think I should maybe wait a bit longer since there's a bunch of stuff that either just released or is just about to release - not to mention I still need to adress some issues that have been raised - but this big pile of wads was just burning a hole in my pocket..!

Awesome, new release. Was wondering about the other British DM WADs lol.

I was gonna suggest for the next release, perhaps you could separate the small episodes from the megaWADs? That way people have a better idea of what kind of "episodes" they're looking at.

It is plug-and-play for DOS environments, which I think is the intended target, but I can see value in that

If we had some sort of WAD selection frontend that could also load dehacked patches and merge/append sprites and flats, then that would be more plug and play.

Actually, I did include both a chocolate doom and DosBox installer in the “utils” directory, so this will work OOB in Win95, 98 and DOS, and just requires installing chocolate doom or DosBox for people using a newer windows version. (Since Doom32.exe is basically limit removing, I think next revision I’ll include DSDA Doom as well to accomodate those wads)

While this is beyond my skill level... I’d freaking love it.
