Shove82 Posted August 19, 2022 This will, hopefully, be my third completed Doom 2 map ever. Did two small for RAMP 2022, which was super fun. Now i'm trying my hands on abit more complex shapes, using stair builder and OTEX textures. For some other scraped maps I tinkered with attenuated lights and 3d floors, but i'll skip that for now I think (but I saved them all, because you never know!) It's super fun for most part! Shanoa Posted August 20, 2022 (edited) I see you folks and your beautiful WIP! Fear the simplicity of my basic starting room. Ok, silliness aside I finally decided to sit down and stop worrying about stuff regarding mapping. I only made 2 maps, the last one being yeaaaars ago but as they say, to improve and find your style you need to map, map and map again. The important thing to me is at least providing something fun to kill a couple minutes while also not making you wanna gouge your eyes out like it's a WAD from 1994, seeing the feedbacks and hopefully using them to improve whatever comes next. So I decided to start working on an Heretic map, of all things, using the medieval ressources pack, as it's mostly recolours of Heretic textures with some original work the author included. I really dig that blue wall so i'll probably design the level around that theme. That's my only screenshot because it's the only room currently but that's the starting room. While I normally enjoy looking at what UDMF mapping offer I went with "Heretic in Doom format" for this and also cause I'd like to maybe make it playable on stuff like PrBoom+ and/or DSDA for convenience sake and also to see what I can do with the mapping format itself. Will see where it goes. Maybe I should've some dang faith in myself too. 21 Share this post Link to post

Shove82 Posted August 21, 2022 Pushing on. Took me forever to get the OLLLL texture to line up on the first pic in roman numerals for the red key door... Not that happy with the stairs thou, kinda put myself in a corner there, I might redo that or not. Otherwise starting too populate the map with monsters and stuff. Feels like im adding more and more details the longer I go, so I might have to go back to the starting places and add abit more details. Is that something you other ppl do too?Or should I just leave it as it? Its not like it's barren... :/ 20 Share this post Link to post

Pondering which texture/colour to use to break up the usage of the blue texture but i'll see as I design each room, already textured some support ahead of time for the staircase. Casketkrusher Posted August 24, 2022 Some more progress on the next map. I was actually planning on making a city section behind the walls, but I just suck at outdoors especially city levels. I just deleted the whole section and started making a pyramid which you have to climb but it has some nasty traps while you are making your way to the top. I also had the idea of a Cyberdemon on top of the pyramid. It looks cool but he just straight up fires rockets at you while you explore the outer sections of the map, which is challenging but after some playtesting I considered removing him. Maybe I'll add him back and he aggros when you get behind the wall. 19 Share this post Link to post
Shove82 Posted August 24, 2022 Moving forward after several things and rooms that felt right but didn't work out was deleted. Might be the final room on the bottom. Hey Shanoa, that's flattering that you were inspired by screenshots of mine! Your pics are looking really promising as well. Those pastel blues and greys in the Heretic color pallet have a very "warm" feel to them, spite usually being seen as cold drab colors, and those reds and yellows really pop when used sparingly. My suggestion to you would be to experiment more with scale. Make some medium sized rooms with medium sized ledges and pillars, and some larger rooms with larger ledges and pillars, like they were made for giants or dragons. Keep in mind a bigger scale does not have to mean more complex, as this is something that took me a lot of time to understand. As for my screens, they are a tease for an unreleased episode I am working on but it won't be ready for release for many, many months. As for similar finished and released maps that I have made I suggest checking out ROP or ENDQUEST or look at body of works in my profile. 4 Share this post Link to post

In reality my recent screenshot was taken in a medium sized room with an [ shape, I just ended up taking a bad photo. The room still in WIP, i'm chipping away very slow at it. I'm productive in the night so when I boot the map editor I work a little bit here and there. As for your suggestion I will absolutely keep it in my mind as I map.
