Microsoft have confirmed (after accidentally releasing it in Japan several days early!) that Doom 2 will be released onto Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday. This version has achievements, avatar awards, online multiplayer over Live, and most interestingly of all, a new nine-level episode by Nerve Software called No Rest For The Living. It will be 800 Microsoft Points, like the original game.

Regarding the weapon switching and controls, I personally really like it. I loved the controls in the original Doom for the 360, and this is nothing but an improvement in my opinion. My left index finger never gets tired thanks to the always run option, and once you get used to the D-pad, switching between weapons becomes really fast.

One thing I must note about the new levels though; I've finished almost all of them with 200% health and armour, as well as max bullets, shotgun shells, and most of the time, plasma cells. This doesn't bother me really, however, as practically all of the time, this has been because I found many of the rather well hidden secrets. And speaking of them, the secret to get the BFG in Map06 was very well done indeed. I really got the sense I earned my max inventory, rather than I was just given it for nothing.

My favourite map in the new episode is 02 (The Pain Labs), with 05 close behind. All of them look wonderful, but those two stand out.

I must say that it's a bit of a kick in the balls to all the PC Doom users that they only released this new episode for the 360. How many years haven't fans of the original games wished for a new episode release now?

Doom belongs on the pc :p I would be so cool to see a classic doom megawad released by the creative minds of ID Software. So curious to see what they can come up with today.

Probably some long and winding gray and brown hallways with a room every once in a while and lots of monsters teleporting in when you enter it - just like Doom 3... :P

I am hoping to see something better than that :p I bet they can make a megawad within a few weeks time. Never gonna happen I think, but damn that would really be awsome.

Nerve has no obligation to PC gamers. They're doing an Xbox 360 port.

    uuuh, one problem -.-

    Execution could not continue.

Update your port. The latest official versions of ZDoom, GZDoom and Skulltag all support this flag.

    I unlocked the Marine suit, but I don't really like it to be honest, so I just stuck with the bitchin' Doom II t-shirt instead. Here are a few images for those who want to know what the Avatar items look like;

    T-Shirt (Male)
    Marine Suit (Male)

Sorry, but there aren't any female pictures yet, sadly. Hopefully some female gamers will start unlocking them and uploading pictures soon, although I really don't imagine they'll look very different to the male variants.

I finished the original 32 levels today. I can see why I never bothered to play this game beyond the first 7 levels, the game is not nearly as good as the original. I was pretty bored by level 20, but I forced myself to finish the game.

Now to work on the new episode and getting 100 kills in Deathmatch.

    Oh crap here it goes.

Anyway, has anyone found any places to get easy kills in Deathmatch yet? In the first one I'd always host a game on E4M4 which would put me right in front of the Plasma Rifle secret. I'd set it to 5 kills/5 minutes because the other person would always get mad and quit, and you had to finish the match to get credit.

If you find a friend to boost with, just set up a private Player Match, set the time limit to 20 minutes, and turn the frag limit off. Then select Map07, and just keep shooting each other till you've both got 100 kills. After the match is over, the achievement should pop.

I got every achievement but the Deathmatch one now. Duck, you should send me a friend invite so we get that one done. My gamer tag is Proidian.

You got the original Doom as well? I need one more Deathmatch achievement for that one as well.

Maybe I'll let you kill me sometime (been playing MW2 lately), but honestly I'm not into the whole boosting thing. I had a lot of fun squeezing kills out of the first one and it'll be fun doing the same for the second.

Oh we don't have to boost to get it, we would actually play the game. I seem to have trouble finding people to play this game with online. I either get nothing or really laggy people.

Nobody plays Doom online anymore, either.

Well, when I was playing, I'd host a match and wait about 5 minutes for some unfortunate soul to come and join me. But this was like back in '08.

I have been having problems with finding people online when playing Skulltag. Usually only a handful of servers are open and they almost all use custom WADS that I don't even have.

I'm talking about XBLA Doom. I have no problem finding games with Skulltag or Zdaemon.

Anyway, I got 39 kills in Doom 2 today. I FINALLY got a game in Dead Simple, and the guy I was playing against rage-quit after I killed him four times in a row. :(

I finally beat the new episode. I really liked these maps, I think they pulled off the Doom feeling very well. I especially liked the way a lot of maps had secrets that lead to whole new optional areas with tons of monsters. I played on UV and found the difficulty just about right. Except for MAP05: Vivisection. I died on that map a hell of a lot, and ran out of ammo more times that I can remember. Still, I eventually ploughed through. The final battle with the Cyberdemon in that dark maze was pretty cool too.

Oh and I missed the secret level :(

I tried playing this online the other day. I got a 13 kill streak on Circle of Death, and then the guy raged quit. After that, I found one laggy game that was unplayable, and that game ended shortly after I quit. The game could not find another game for me to join after that.

I will never get the last achievement for this game. :(

I don't get all the achievements in games very often, and I like to do it when it doesn't involve an insane amount of game time. I thought this would be an easy thing to do.
